Not that I'm really arsed what city takes this title, but surley London has a pretty good claim to it seeing as how its the capital of a country that was one of the first to really embrace Techno and give the Detroit labels (through Neil Rushton and others) the support and exposure they needed for the music to even get off the ground in those early days. Plus the whole warehouse/summer of love/rave/acid house/Orbital parties call it what you like scene bloomed over here first before the rest of the world caught on and those early techno tracks played a big part at some of those parties. Also fast forward to the present and London is a pretty techno friendly city, there's big name Detroit DJs spinning here almost on a weekly basis it seems these days.

Many cities may also claim urban governance and industrial declines - it's a general rationalisation and one that isn't unique - Birmingham and Sheffield do has strong resemblance's to Detroit rather than say Berlin but is that enough? Any City that is dependent on one industry could also stake a claim on those grounds. Cheers Martin

I never hooked onto the whole Mondays/Stone Roses/New Order thing and never really felt that it had anything to do with what I was getting into. Have never really made any effort to extended my knowledge of the Manchester scene in those days (Having never ever even ventured further North than to the Eclipse in Coventry a few times! I don't mind so much crap headphones and needles as much as places that play the music in the store louder than what you're trying to listen to. I mean, c'mon store clerks, I'm trying to find out if I want to spend money at your shop and I need to hear if I like what I have in my stack of possible purchases. However, if you're going to play your music louder than what I'm trying to hear and it's interfering with what I'm listening to then f*ck it - I'm putting it all back and walking out. I don't expect the shop to be museum quiet but finding good music nowadays is hard enough - I don't want to have to fight with the in-store stereo. Having filed for bankruptcy at the start of the year, EFA, which stands for Energy For All, tried to avoid the administrators by downsizing their staff, restructuring their distribution methods and channels and negotiating with possible investigators. Unfortunately, none of these came to fruition. EFA was the distributor for many upfront labels that have existed for many years now including Perlon, Kanzleramt, Playhouse, Tresor, Force Inc, Shitkatapult, Freude-am-Tanzen, and Pokerflat to name but a few. EFA had five in-house labels too. It's true, EFA Medien have filed for bankruptcy and unfortunately our own labels E:Motion, Hear 2 Hear, ESC, Clearspot and Secret Life are in trouble too. We don't know what will happen next yet. We just have to wait, said an EFA Medien employee. Gigolo Records, who used EFA Medien as their main distributor, are concerned about the effect this bankruptcy will have on other, smaller labels but are currently negotiating with other distributors themselves. RE: (313) looking for acid (house)
Hey I don't often chime in with a spontaneous record recommendation (though sometimes reply as I already have to the thread above). But (it's still sort of a reply as this is one cool slice of acid though not the old school Chicago style requested): the Henrik Schwarz mix of Wei Chi Faces Places on Compost is absolutely corking in my opinion. Check it (or sleep and weep). Francis

I just got this message. And I don't think You will get flamed, but I always question when d.j.'s blame berlin for the harder looped based techno. I always thought it was Old Mills and Hood that started that stuff. Hood later on slowed down the tempo of his tracks and mills changed all together but they really started the hard aggressive stuff along with Banks. Oh also let's don't forget about Alan Oldham. And Denham. Even though jay came later. On a side note. What do you do there for TBS? Stoddard Turner Broadcasting Systems Entech -Original Message- From: Stoddard, Kamal subject: RE: (313) If I really agree with this. In all honesty, I think a lot of the Chicago stuff, acid house and the reflex, had more of an influence on the sound of electronic music globally than the Detroit style. That being said, I actually think that out of the big three', only kevin made tracks that again converted into the next wave of electronic music, which happens to be the european stuff that came to define techno or dance music throughout the past 10 years. this isn't meant to be a deviding comment as much as just an interesting notion to think about. obviously, this list will focus on 313 techno- but i do sometimes feel like the influence of protottypical detroit techno is overstated. in the sea of electronic music, detroit techno is a significant buoy. but chicago seems more like lighthouse to me. thoughts? to be honest, I'd have to say chicago. there was so much interaction in the early days between the chi-town and detroit heads, as well as the oft spoken about mutual admiration/respect held for each city by the other in the early days. One, the hard Berlin sound actually had it's genesis in detroit with jeff mills, rob hood and that crew. and everyone of the detroit figureheads have played (i believe we decided the term was) loop-bangers at some point. And two, if you're saying that support doesn't matter when crowning detroit nad chicago kings, than why should the support berlin provided to the hard sound disqualify it? i'm agreeing with you that chicago should be considered city number two (or maybe number one given a more panoramic look at the question), but i see no reason to discount berlin (maybe as city number 3?) the Berlin thing kind of disturbs me because as I see it, they were the ones that misdefined techno to the world. RE: (313) If
With that said, I do agree with what you said about Chicago. When I hear what people are known to call Detroit Techno, I think more of Chicago House. I guess I was like the people that May was complaining about. I always thought of Detroit Techno being more of the old mills and hood sound/ Old UR. That's mainely because I miss the whole first generation growing up. -Original Message- From: Redmond, Ja'Maul Sent: Tuesday, September 21, 2004 3:53 PM To: Stoddard, Kamal; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313 List (E-mail) Subject: RE: (313) If I just got this message. amazing. already the decent conversation flows instead of the typical flamebait. - Original Message -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] to be honest, I'd have to say chicago. there was so much interaction in the early days between the chi-town and detroit heads, as well as the oft spoken about mutual admiration/respect held for each city by the other in the early days. i agree with chicago as the choice, and i think yussel actually articulated all the reasons in the best manner so far. IMO the similarities in chicago house and detroit techno are far greater than their differences. i see two problems with your argument here. (313) Regis
Are any Chicago people going to check out REGIS on Saturday, I am really excited about that show!!! I was disappointed to see someone else in Chicago putting an interesting event on the same night, but I have to check Regis as I do like that style of techno and I don't know if I'll ever get to see him again. On a related note, I get rather annoyed when people trying to split off hard techno from the Detroit continuum, I think it all has its place and it isn't helpful to try and blame hard techno for everything wrong with techno. We don't need superstar DJs to save the world from bad techno. We just need the true music lovers to continue to do their best to support the music they love and spread the word. ~David
