so i know it's poor form to answer my own mail but

if transmat (maybe a bad example, but a big label) went all
digital...no vinyl but you can still buy a pack with artwork etc from
record shops that allows you to DL the track say a max of 5 times would
everyone else jump too? there has to be a point when that is true
surely (there's be a DL only version for less too)

that might be a way for labels to survive.

any comments? or is this kinda discussion all played out like jaguar? :)

Not that I'm really arsed what city takes this title, but surley London has
a pretty good claim to it seeing as how its the capital of a country that
was one of the first to really embrace Techno and give the Detroit labels
(through Neil Rushton and others) the support and exposure they needed for
the music to even get off the ground in those early days. Plus the whole

But your not and for the record I don't think or feel it's Sheffield as
the electronic scene here dates back to 1973 - way before techno, so
I'd say Sheffield was more of an influence than The Second City. Many
cities may also claim urban governance and industrial declines - it's a
general rationalisation and one that isn't unique - Birmingham and
Sheffield do has strong resemblance's to Detroit rather than say
Berlin but is that enough? Any City that is dependent on one industry
could also stake a claim on those grounds.

You know Ive always wondered about the whole early Manchester (or Madchester
as the crap Tee shirts told us) scene. I was going to warehouse parties as
early as 89, but I always imagined the Hacienda and Manchester thing to be
slightly different. I never hooked onto the whole Mondays/Stone Roses/New
Order thing and never really felt that it had anything to do with what I was
getting into. Have never really made any effort to extended my knowledge of
the Manchester scene in those days (Having never ever even ventured further
North than to the Eclipse in Coventry a few times! I'm Southern through and
through!) other than what I've read in Techno Rebels and some other cool
book on the history of rave culture, but even then I still thought that it
all sounded a bit different to what I remember of those early heady days. I
mean we were all wearing 30 inch flairs, baggy hooded tops with 'freaky'
patterns on, Kickers, wallabies and floppy hats as well, but I dont remember
ever hearing a Manchester track played at a single party I ever went to.

In shrinking cities like Detroit (USA), Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield

have sometimes had a significant influence on the cities' development.
Shrinking Cities Music acoustically and theoretically addresses the
question how music production developed and established itself in
shrinking cities. Are shrinking cities especially productive sites for
music? How is the city reflected and thematized in music production?

Ok, obviously yes I heard them. I was referring to the band orientated music
from Manchester (Mondays, Roses etc..) that seemed to have very strong ties
to the scene up there. From a personal London/South Coast perspective this
music/vibe never really reached me and seemed more a part of the 'indie'
scene than the parties I was going to. As I said, I just dont remember
hearing it played down here. I guess the point of me even bringing this up

I don't mind so much crap headphones and needles as much as places that
play the music in the store louder than what you're trying to listen to.
I mean, c'mon store clerks, I'm trying to find out if I want to spend money
at your shop and I need to hear if I like what I have in my stack of
possible purchases. However, if you're going to play your music louder than
what I'm trying to hear and it's interfering with what I'm listening to
then f*ck it - I'm putting it all back and walking out. I don't expect the
shop to be museum quiet but finding good music nowadays is hard enough - I
don't want to have to fight with the in-store stereo.

DISTRIBUTOR EFA MEDIEN BANKRUPT
After 22 years of supplying Europe with various styles of music, the curtain
has finally fallen on EFA Medien, Germany's largest distributor of
electronic music. Having filed for bankruptcy at the start of the year, EFA,
which stands for Energy For All, tried to avoid the administrators by
downsizing their staff, restructuring their distribution methods and

these came to fruition.
EFA was the distributor for many upfront labels that have existed for many
years now including Perlon, Kanzleramt, Playhouse, Tresor, Force Inc,
Shitkatapult, Freude-am-Tanzen, and Pokerflat to name but a few. EFA had
five in-house labels too.

It's true, EFA Medien have filed for bankruptcy and unfortunately our own
labels E:Motion, Hear 2 Hear, ESC, Clearspot and Secret Life are in trouble
too. We don't know what will happen next yet. We just have to wait, said an
EFA Medien employee.

Gigolo Records, who used EFA Medien as their main distributor, are concerned
about the effect this bankruptcy will have on other, smaller labels but are
currently negotiating with other distributors themselves. Kanzleramt have
already announced that they will use Roughtrade and Neutron to distribute
their vinyl and CD's in the future, while Superstition got lucky by

I really agree with this. In all honesty, I think a lot of the Chicago
stuff, acid house and the reflex, had more of an influence on the sound of
electronic music globally than the Detroit style. That being said, I
actually think that out of the big three', only kevin made tracks that
again converted into the next wave of electronic music, which happens to
be the european stuff that came to define techno or dance music throughout
the past 10 years. this isn't meant to be a deviding comment as much as
just an interesting notion to think about. obviously, this list will focus
on 313 techno- but i do sometimes feel like the influence of protottypical
detroit techno is overstated. in the sea of electronic music, detroit
techno is a significant buoy. but chicago seems more like lighthouse to
me.

thoughts?

i see two problems with your argument here. One, the hard Berlin sound
actually had it's genesis in detroit with jeff mills, rob hood and that
crew. and everyone of the detroit figureheads have played (i believe we
decided the term was) loop-bangers at some point. And two, if you're
saying that support doesn't matter when crowning detroit nad chicago
kings, than why should the support berlin provided to the hard sound
disqualify it?

i'm agreeing with you that chicago should be considered city number two
(or maybe number one given a more panoramic look at the question), but i
see no reason to discount berlin (maybe as city number 3?)

When I hear what people are known to call Detroit Techno, I think more
of Chicago House. I guess I was like the people that May was

old mills and hood sound/ Old UR.

sound (and vice versa) before any of the overseas heads ever got ahold
of it, and continued to be a major factor in the shaping of the sound
via labels like relief and their ilk. so i vote Chicago.

the Berlin thing kind of disturbs me because as I see it, they were the
ones that misdefined techno to the world. Derrick May was talking about
this in his interview earlier ( I have to redefine the concept of
techno every time I play because people come in expecting... hard edged
abrasive intrusive, into-the-cortex type music while I'm coming from a
really melodic, rhythmic high tech soul angle... ) I think a large part
of the reason that people expect that non-melodic, abrasive, intrusive
sound when they think techno is because that's what they were taught by
the Berlin school (okay stockholm too) to expect. I laugh because even
the creators of this music are trying to shake off that stigma many
years later. I don't hold any contempt for Berlin or any of it's
inhabitants (think it's one of the best places on earth right now
actually) but i just feel that berlin's contributions to the advancement
of techno (artistically speaking, not support-wise) are just recently
comin!
g into their own in the last 5 or 6 years. the berlin influence seemed
to hinder that advancement early on by narrowing the techno field of
vision to loopy aggressive bizness. dunno, guess i'm rambling now. hope
I don't get flamed for this one.

amazing. already the decent conversation flows instead of the
typical flamebait.

to be honest, I'd have to say chicago. there was so much
interaction in the early days between the chi-town and detroit
heads, as well as the oft spoken about mutual admiration/respect
held for each city by the other in the early days.

i agree with chicago as the choice, and i think yussel actually
articulated all the reasons in the best manner so far. IMO the
similarities in chicago house and detroit techno are far greater
than their differences.

i see two problems with your argument here. One, the
hard Berlin sound
actually had it's genesis in detroit with jeff mills, rob hood
and that
crew. and everyone of the detroit figureheads have played (i
believe we
decided the term was) loop-bangers at some point. i'm agreeing
with you that chicago should be considered city number two
(or maybe number one given a more panoramic look at the
question), but i
see no reason to discount berlin (maybe as city number 3?)

for city #3 id have to say its either london or berlin. while
berlin does have quite an interesting history, especially in
reguard to detroit artists and influences, london was the middle
ground to getting there. without british journalism, would the
chicago and detroit scenes be what they are today?

i also agree that techno has been pretty heavily misrepresented by
looped banger producers, but thats certainly not strictly a berlin
and stockholm thing. i can think of many people still pushing that
kind of thing in the uk and the us as well as many other countries
(check the global techno email list for more info, though not all
of those cats are strictly into looped bangers...).

in my mind, detroit and chicago are like the meccas, while london
and berlin are the places that have done the most with the music
since its invention outside of the mecca cities.

(313) Regis

2004-09-21 Thread David Powers
Are any Chicago people going to check out REGIS on Saturday, I am really
excited about that show!!! I was disappointed to see someone else in Chicago
putting an interesting event on the same night, but I have to check Regis as I
do like that style of techno and I don't know if I'll ever get to see him
again.

On a related note, I get rather annoyed when people trying to split off hard
techno from the Detroit continuum, I think it all has its place and it isn't
helpful to try and blame hard techno for everything wrong with techno. We
don't need superstar DJs to save the world from bad techno. We just need the
true music lovers to continue to do their best to support the music they love
and spread the word.

i cant speak for everybody, but i think the bias is just because
harder techno seems very insulated from other forms of techno.
like yussel pointed out earlier, all of the main detroit players
have played the hard stuff, and they obviously invented it as
well. but they never or rarely play it exclusively, at least not
now. mixing it up is whats up if youre going to play harder stuff.
i think kenny larkin's set at movement was good, lots of harder
loopy stuff but mixed with more melodic stuff as well. every now
and then i feel like hearing a full on nothing but banging techno
set, but not usually. i think most people feel that way about it
on this list
