late on this, but i'd bet that theo dumps to analog tape.

you'd be suprised what running your main outs to an old VCR will do to your
tracks.

Hi!

My feeling is that I love most of what Theo does, but as a (much,
much, much) less successful producer, I hear things in otherwise great
tracks that are 'wrong' in a way that is a sharp stick in the ear for
no discernable artistic reason. Some tracks I want to remaster -
mostly run them through a De-Esser, compress the low end to keep it
manageable.

I actually consider theo parrish to be a GREAT producer. Take a listen to
dan ryan or lights donw low (this one mix). I am sure he spends a lot
of time making the sounds sound like they sound. I really dig all the
sounds he uses, espacially the Laurel Aitken alike ska 'shakk' in dan
ryan, wich he also used in twin citys. And I still wonder how he did
the kick in music it sounds so hard, but the levels are ok.

I think everybody agrees that Theo has no studio (I never heard him use a
synth, and he uses too much samples and does too much stuff to them to
work efficiently with a sampler). He probably has only one all-in studio
application on his computer. My guess is he uses Orion or somthing alike
(I recongize the typical filters used of the sampler module). The only
sounds he uses is stuff recorded from disco, ska, and soul recordings.
What he basicly does is sampling an organ, pitching it down 2 octaves an
filter it low and put a bit distortion on it. I think this is a very
original way of sound processing, it creates a really nice warm, but kind
of hard sound. I really like his way of doing things, I enjoy listening to
his records very much. Just as I like listening to Carl Craig's early 69
records or paperclip people's the secret tapes of dr. eich, wich also
have a typical lo-fi production.

What I do consider to be true is that the production on friendly
children is really bad, there is just to much bass there, resulting in a
really bad press. Maybe the people at peacefrog could press this record
better? I don´t know. Also the ugly edits are sometimes to much
bass-fueled (and too repetative most of the time).

Let me conclude with a top 5 of my favourite theo parrish records (wich I
condider to be well produced):

1) lights down low (this one mix) - the tracky mix with loads of noise.
2) dan ryan
3) dance sing
4) music
5) solitary flight

Can't wait for the Carl Craig remix of Falling Up. I had to sell the
detroit beatdown compilation because I couldn't bear the tought that I had
a triple record pack with only one good track on it.

Cheers,
Maarten

Well I see what you're saying, though to my ears the Rick Wilhite track is
rougher in some ways than the Theo track - maybe in an atonal way - I also
think one of Norm Talley's tracks 'Change', is quite raw.

Hold on a god darned minute - did you really only like one track on the
whole thing.seriously?

yes, I am serious. And I am aware of the fact that I am about the only one
who only likes the theo parrish track. The other tracks sound so pollished
to me. It's like they want to get deep but don't get there. I really don't

not the best track to leave on, unattended, while you go re-fill your cup of

every time I mix this track, i get some evil looks from the listeners just

I just stand back before it comes on and hold my hands up like look, I'm

theres pics of his studio on the recent reissue of parallel

Hello WANGers
After all going quiet on the WANG front for a couple of months, WANG is
back
on the attack, bigger and better than ever before. And boy do we have a
special one planned for you for new year's eve.
We've managed to secure a top secret warehouse location in east london,
five
minutes walk from two tube stations (both zone two)
And for the first time ever, we'll have the musical might of the full
Fairshare Unity Soundsystem (all sixteen scoop bins) finally back up to
full strength, a true wonder of the modern world!

We're working on a totally mind blowing line-up with full details to follow
in a couple of days (once we've sorted out the final details)

Tickets will be a mere £15, (surely a bargain for new years eve) and bar
prices will be kept nice and friendly.

We'll be rocking from 8pm right through till 5.30am

Tickets are £15 in advance, and will be available from this weekend from:
Eukatech Records - 49 Endel Street, Covent Garden 020 7240 8060
Sounds of the Universe - 7 Broadwick Street, Soho 020 7494 2004
Smallfish Records - 329 Old Street, Shoreditch 020 7439 2252

Sorry we can't tell you anymore yet, we just wanted to let you all know
that
we're oncourse for a banging party, and not to despair. More info to follow
soon Watch this space.

WANG - We're back!

Less of a club, more of a party!

Actually the Involver CD is OK, I understand what he is doing - from the
point of view of someone boxed in by prog, quite good. I don't think he
commands much charisma behind the decks though.
Sometimes you have to check things out to see what the fuss is all about so
you can diss more strategically (or, ahem, jump on the bandwagon) - like
Coldplay (OK, nice songs, like Chris Martin's Jamelia collabo), Franz
Ferdinand (what is the big deal?), Scissor Sisters (Army Of Lovers for 2004,
hah!), Bridget Jones flicks (actually hilarious, excellent, finally shrugged
off the misconception that Hugh Grant is the Judge Jules of thespians), etc,
etc, etc.

2004-12-06 Thread jason kenjar

Alright, my favorite 10 artist for 2004 : (in no particular order)

1) Lucien-n-Luciano : Man, has this guy made a lot of great stuff this
year. I cant keep track of it all. Blind Behaviour is an incredible
album.
2) DJ Bone : All of his new subject detroit records are top shelf. Each
record of the series impresses me equally. He's back
3) Keith Tucker: The new Fuzion: Detroit to Rome ep is a masterpiece.
Classic Keith (and great effort by Max Durante)

4) Posatronix: that new release on Planck Era is really something else.
5) Orlando Voorn: The new ignitor series is great, I play out the TANK
release a lot. Hes also re-releasing a lot of gems.

6) Juan Atkins: The new fast forward series is very imaginative techno.
7) Sterac Electronics: I love all his new electro cuts.
8) Isolee - have you heard the Pony the Funk rmx? Or the Recloose rmx
he's done?

9) Dex: The electro cut on Motech 5. Submerge.
10) memory Foundation: Great techno on central.

laters

 Hey my european friends.

What's better (in the record shop):

 'HIT!!!' ?

 or 'TIP!!!' ?

 I always wondered.

Whats below them - 'CHECK!' ?
