Yep Abe Duque is all over the place these days. :)

If you're looking for more dance oriented music I would suggest David
Byrne's solo work. He's heavily explored Latin Afro-Latin music.
Also, Tina Weymouth (TH bassist) and Chris Frantz (TH drummer) group the
Tom Tom Club. Probably the most disco/dance oriented music that has come
out of any of the TH members.

take at the TH's discogs profile and you'll see that later on they were
remixed (and extented mixed) by mid 80s NYC club people like Arthur
Baker, Eric Thorngren, etc.

there are so many connections between talking heads and 80's NYC
art/hip-hop / leftfield disco (and emerging hip-hop) scene, Bambaata,
Debbie Harry, Basquiat, Keith Haring, it was all happening at The Roxy
where the cultures and styles collided. David Byrne also worked with
Arthur Russell, I think he played guitar on a few cuts nuff said
right there. Tina Weymouth of Tom Tom Club was a pal of Grandmaster
Flash in early 80s, among others... back when it was all one crazy
mixed-up and mascara smeared night out.

Talking Heads have some really funky tracks that i've thrown into sets
before, some of the cuts on Speaking In Tongues -- prob. my favorite
LP, from like 1983... this was the tour that was filmed to become Stop
making Sense movie... it has EVERYTHING, Burning Down the House,
Slippery People, Girlfriend is Better... (David Byrne hand painted the
album cover!) Tracks like like Naive Melody and Moon Rocks and Pull Up
The Roots can be mixes in with left-field disco and dance music for the
adventurous DJ Pull Up the Roots has a really wicked kind of synth
arpeggiation that recalls of disco. Also if nobody has yet sampled
the opening synthesized tom-tom and kickdrum beats yet in Psycho Killer
for a cut, get busy... they'd be perfect.

Also their track Slippery People is an all time favorite, later covered
in an incredibly funky-yet-electronic-yet-chicago-gospel fashion by the
Staple Singers. I need to pull that one out again. The 12-inch
extended mix is the best but there's a good short version on the
Turning Point LP. I mean, Pop Staples singing David Byrne.. what else
can you say. Everytime I've ever played this version out, people come
ask me about it.

some of their tracks still sound ahead of their time TODAY.

Fans should make sure to check 'True Stories' with David Byrne and John Goodman
for a subgenius-style send-up of the Texas sesquicentenial. It's hillarious,
particularly the music. J.R. Bob Dobbs even makes an appearance or two.

My favourite Talking Heads track has got to be 'Road to Nowhere', which sums up
their joyous nihilism pretty well I think. The video with that shopping cart
was sweet too.

Rob Taylor and Anya Stang say I dance like him. Dunno if that's a good thing. ;)

(313) MARCH 21st: DABRYE (feat. Kadence) and RADIAN at 555.

2005-03-11 Thread Thomas Meluch
Ghostly International's DABRYE (featuring Kadence) and Thrill Jockey's
RADIAN will be performing on March 21st at Detroit¹s 555 Gallery. The show
will mark Dabrye¹s first local live performance since last summer and
promises to be an excellent glimpse into his forthcoming Two/Three
full-length.

Dabrye, an alias of Tadd Mullinix, combines head-nodding beats and electro
bass lines that explore hip-hop forms with a keen eye to forward-thinking
production and rhythms. Kadence is one of Ann Arbor¹s finest MCs, making a
name for himself with a highly stylized flow and demeanor that serves as a
perfect complement to Mullinix¹s deconstructionist rhythms.

Radian is becoming a major musical force as part of the Thrill Jockey
roster, creating a unique sound based on lacey melodies and deep,
jazz-influenced grooves culled from a combination of live and electronic
instruments. The Vienna-based trio has released two albums to date, which
have gained them praise from publications such as The New York Times,
Magnet, Wire, and more.

MONDAY, MARCH 21ST, 2005
Dabrye featuring Kadence
With special guests Radian
DETROIT @ 555 Gallery
4884 Grand River Ave
Detroit, MI 48208
