Re: (313) May's Mojo - where it gone?

2005-08-26 Thread Cyclone Wehner
That is harsh as he doesn't live like that at all. He's v frugal in some
ways. That image is just a UK media creation.
He plays abstract music when the setting is right.
I think people in general make these bold statements about money without
realising where the money goes - you assume people don't give money to
families, or are not putting some aside for security (it's not like the US
has a decent social security or free health care) in an industry where
superannuation is non existent. They say the same things with Jeff Mills...
These people still don't command the $ of the really big UK players of the
90s...

Anyway, selling records is hard work and doesn't bring in that much money
in the techno world, I doubt it would be able to support the superstar
life style and the expensive cars etc. So he's probably best off sticking
to DJing.

I know this is harsh, but I still do really appreciate some of his classic
tracks.

Re: (313) May's Mojo - where it gone?

2005-08-26 Thread Cyclone Wehner

He has a real nice unreleased song called Hand Over Hand from the early 90s
that sounds v now. There is a vocal version but I have only heard the
instrumental.

I seem to remember in that very good article on Techno Tourist last year
(?) he said it was legal issues which prevented him from releasing stuff
 until they're resolved.

I could believe that, but I do wonder if they're other issues.

The thing is though, until very recent years, Derrick May has in fact
continued to produce throughout this so-called hiatus! Whether it's by
way of collaboration, an unoffcial 'bootleg', or as a remixer.

OK, I know it hasn't been ideal ...

Not hating, but I've heard sooo much about these records, and I can't seem

tracks from him, but I am not feeling most of them.

I can see collectors being all over the seemingly underground style hand

For the benefit of me and others on this list that may feel the same, please
list the essential Omar-S releases that I need to hear to change my mind.

Police Raid Outdoor Music Event
by Parker Pinette Monday August 22, 2005 at 04:30 AM
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Numerous accounts from attendees of an outdoor electronic music event
in Utah county indicate excessive force used by Sherrif and SWAT
officers. A video has surfaced depicting officers dressed in full
military fatigues raiding the main stage of the event. Local news
stations side with police in initial reports.

Attendees of the outdoor electronic music event dubbed Versus II
taking place the evening of Saturday, August 20th in the Diamond Fork
area of Spanish Fork Canyon in Utah County arrived at the event with
confidence that the concert organizers had obtained the proper permits
and legal clearance to hold the event. Personal accounts available at
the local electronic community websiteutrave.org paint a scene of
police brutality and mayhem, many accounts bearing eyewitness to the
forceful arrest of young girls.

Reports state that at approximately 11:30pm upwards of 90 officers,
many wearing full camouflage gear, gathered from Sherrif and SWAT
departments in surrounding areas stormed the previously peaceful
gathering dedicated to music and dance. At least 1 helicopter was
dispatched, along with large tranport vehicles designated for both
officers and detainees. Numerous statements from attendees indicate
excessive force being exerted by many officers. Inuries including mild
to severe bruises and cuts have been reported by party goers as young
as age 17.

The Utah County Sherrif's Office has expressed a long term vendetta
against what they call Rave parties. Statements from the Sherrif's
office as well as eyewitness accounts make it clear that this was a
premeditated attack on the promoters and community supporting these
events. While the Sherrif's office has stated that many drugs and
pieces of paraphernalia were obtained, they fail to note how many of
the 60+ citations were for drug violations. Many accounts indicate the
majority of citations and arrests were for resisting arrest. The
Sherrif's office states that the party was raided on the grounds of
failure to obtain a mass gathering permit for an event hosting more
than 250 attendees. Reports vary as to the number in attendance,
estimation ranging from 250 to 1,400. Controversy exists as to whether
a mass gathering permit was actually obtained, however, a Health
Department permit was obtained, and hired security and emergency
medical service personnel were on site.

Many eyewitness accounts indicate that officers singled out party
goers attempting to document the events on camcorders, cameras and
camera phones. Victims have claimed that officers knocked cameras out
of the hands of the owner, even confiscating some. Luckily, one video
has surfaced, and is quickly spreading across the internet, as well as
being featured by at least one local news station. The video clearly
displays a large number of officers dressed in full camouflage
fatigues, some brandishing rifles. In the higher quality version of
the video, which includes sound, it is apparent that the use of a
taser was employed. While the video is somewhat unclear at times, the
viewer can plainly see an officer atop a young girl fully subdued on
the ground on her stomach; he swings on her at least twice, as more
officers rush forward to manhandle the girl. It is clear that many
others were subdued using similar levels of force.

Initial reports from local news stations side with the Sherrif's
Office, one anchor calling the event a drug party without batting an
eye. Reports tend to focus on the drugs and paraphernalia acquired by
police, rather than the obvious violation of civil liberties reported
by those in attendance and depicted by the amateur video, which has
been provided to all major local news agencies.

Surprisingly, the local Fox News affiliate Fox 13 seemed to give the
most unbiased report, stating that many attendees had reported
excessive force, as well as showing the official media response from
the Utah County Sherrif's Office. Clips of the previously mentioned
video were also shown.

Other news agencies have gone along with the Sherrif's Office in
painting a picture of drugs, guns, and sexual assault running rampant
at electronic music events in general, and especially this one. KUTV
Channel 2 News blatantly inferred that the hired security was merely
in place to prevent the sale of drugs by anyone but the event
organizers. All major reports restate the claim made by the Sherrif's
department that a

Agree with you. Me thinks the raw-ness, low-fi-ness or the (apparent)
under-production of Omar-S songs are qualities that attract most people.

Personaly I only like the Oasis #1 and maybe that Omar-S track #8 and U.

Every year DJ magazine compiles a top 100 list of the supposed best dj´s
around, yet it rarely features any techno at all. The top 100 may not seem
important, you may not like DJ mag and you probably already know who your
favourite dj´s are..get to see them often and don´t need to stroke their ego by
voting for them. The reason it is important is that the list is seen globally
as¨official¨, as the real people/party goers´ choice. By techno having little
or no representation in the top 100 the profile of the trance and pop dj´s that
make up most of the list just gets bigger while the techno scene keeps getting
smaller, slipping further into obscurity.
As the club scene continues to spread around the world it will forever be
dominated by the same few select DJ´s if they are the only ones that are ever
mentioned in the magazines. New scenes and new clubs will never get to hear
about anything but the obvious names, and music styles like techno, electro,
broken beat or electronica will simply never make it to new places or find new
audiences to keep it alive.

This year though, we´d like to turn things around: Instead of the media forever

so not many people are paying them for their art ...
therefore they have a difficult business-situation ...
therefore they have to focus on normal jobs for surviving without

how many of the most gifted can´t make the music they could give to the

Every year DJ magazine compiles a top 100 list of the supposed best
dj´s around, yet it rarely features any techno at all. The top 100 may
not seem important, you may not like DJ mag and you probably already
know who your favourite dj´s are..get to see them often and don´t need
to stroke their ego by voting for them. The reason it is important is
that the list is seen globally as¨official¨, as the real people/party
goers´ choice. By techno having little or no representation in the top
100 the profile of the trance and pop dj´s that make up most of the
list just gets bigger while the techno scene keeps getting smaller,
slipping further into obscurity.
As the club scene continues to spread around the world it will forever
be dominated by the same few select DJ´s if they are the only ones
that are ever mentioned in the magazines. New scenes and new clubs
will never get to hear about anything but the obvious names, and music
styles like techno, electro, broken beat or electronica will simply
never make it to new places or find new audiences to keep it alive.

This year though, we´d like to turn things around: Instead of the
media forever brainwashing the readers with the same old names we´d
like to put techno firmly back on the map - and we can do so with your
help. So please take out a couple of minutes of your time and try to
get a few more deserving DJ´s in the top 100 this year:

I thought it was quite a reasonable request actually, they asked nicely and it
would indeed be nice to see old Dezzer or Carl at the top of the list instead

I voted, though not for any of the Retrovert peeps, but somehow I suspect that

100 Top - according to what criteria?,... popularity.
It's nothing to do with skill, it's a popularity contest.

Do you really want to be the most popular dj in the world?
I understand the frustration that some people think becuase tietso is
number one he is the top (skill) dj in the world. The only possibility
of a fair contest is if all voters had seen all djs.

besides this kind of thing is ultra uncool :P

I'm with Rob on this issue.

This top 100 is about as much relevance to the music I love as a poll
in Hello or Heat magazine.

DJ mag could quite happily go out of business and 99.9% of us wouldn't
notice.

kind of coverage in widely available magazines once again and to some small
extent I think participating in this poll by pushing my own musical agenda is a
step in that direction. Not holding my breath mind...

Me too Dan. Thing is though we live in vastly different times both
musically (techno and house are really niche types of music at the
moment) and in terms of publishing (the web is where people read stuff
now). Paper magazines are irrelevant now and as DJ mag has always been
irrelevant that is makes it doubly so :).

Well maybe guys like Richard Brophy would who does a pretty sterling job of
reviewing and supporting techno in the mag. Hes reviewed pretty much all of
my stuff there and I'm sure he gets a little frustrated at the lack of
techno coverage the mag publishes. But at the end of the day its about
selling mags and if they feel 99.9% of techno heads dont care about the mag
then they aint gonna bother writing for them. Muzik and Jockey Slut have
already fallen in the UK (the latter being quite a bit more respectable with
the amount of good techno coverage they did) so there aint much space left
in the media for techno artists to get any kind of headline, which is a
shame I think. I remember guys like Fabrice Lig getting big interviews in
the UK press when they were up and coming (if you can call doing an album
for F-communications up and coming!) and Im sure it did them some good.
Anyway yeah, I'm sure this top 100 list is gonna be full of the usual top
names that help sell magazines and not reflect in any way, shape or form the
actual talent that is really out there, but thats still no reason to not let
them know that that they are out there. You never know, they might even
allow Richard a full page for reviews again one day!

In the meantime I'm off to buy Straight No Chaser

Agree that times are different. As you say, I get most of my info
electronically, but I've been reading magazines again recently. Partly through
digging out old copies of Straight No Chaser (re-read the UR cover story issue
recently) and Grand Central, but have also been enjoying recent issues of Wax
Poetics. As a result I've remembered that I prefer reading paper print to
looking at a screen.

Granted, these are marginal niche magazines, but I'm not convinced that it has
to be like that.

Maybe I'm just in a participatory and optimistic mood today ;)

Assuming that the track from about 51 minutes in (to the 57 minute mark,
