(313) A Bluffer's Guide to Detroit Techno
Just found this. http://www.stylusmagazine.com/articles/weekly_article/night-drive-a- bluffers-guide-to-detroit-techno.htm From the page: "This Bluffer’s Guide to Detroit Techno does not strive to be definitive, merely an introduction. I urge any of you reading this with even a passing interest in electronic dance music to check out some of the recommended tracks and explore further on your own. Consider this a launching pad, not a Bible." I haven't read it all, but it looks accurate enough. I know there is nothing new in there for any of us list members, but the article is nice and short enough, so I now finally have a link to give to people who don't know what real techno is. Thought some of you might find that useful as well. Joost

Wrong. It's co-run by Tim Price and Dale Lawrence. RE: (313) Ron Trent in Manchester tonight?
>have you seen tonight the choice of dos? Yes indeed I'm constantly annoyed at the "three nights you want to go out and there's nothing on, on the fourth there's three things you want to go to on at once" effect. It's especially vexing since it's a Friday and in Manchester there's not usually much on on Fridays, the exception being the first Friday of the month (as this is) which people must think is an easy one to remember. I've been pulled in two directions for a year since Eyes Down switched to Fridays and is always on the same night as Kindergarten. This may be changing but for tonight my plan is: > think k.saunderson Yes, Kindergarten @ Attic. I would go to this, I've never seen Kevin play (or maybe I saw him at a rave in Scotland in 2001 not sure, Inner City were live at one I went to in Carlisle (!) in 2002 and again maybe he span that night too but I don't remember, not through inebriation, it just wasn't a very memorable night). As far as I can tell he doesn't have that good a rep as a DJ (I've heard people say he can spin quite commercial stuff or trance?) so I've never made a journey, even a small one (I think he played Hebden Bridge a while back?) to see him, however if not for everything else I would be going as I've seen nearly all the other bigger (or back in the day?) Detroit artists play (Derrick, Juan, Carl, Kenny, various members of UR, Stacey, Jeff, Shake) so I'd really like to complete the set. + I still LOVE his X-Mix CD. > joakim Bugged Out @ 1 Central St. More your bag than mine. You beard stroking weirdos. > ron trent Development @ Mint Lounge. So I'm risking the £10 on him showing. Give me a shout Robin, Nick. I'll be trying to find out up to the last minute whether he's made the trip or not. Plus what time he's on - I might get there late as the tale of night pile-up doesn't finish there: Eyes Down @ the Roadhouse with residents Jon K and Kelvin Brown. I love this night. I was going to be giving it a miss tonight under the circumstances but it turns now it's their last at the Roadhouse and for a while so I plan to visit early before moving on to the Ron T gig. The night my mates have just started @ Scubar. You geniuses, you certainly did your homework on picking the right night. I went to the first one last month and promise I'll come next time, tough luck on my £ tonight.

Seems the presumption of what a techno club or fan is causes no end of problems, especially in the UK. Can't agree Tom, I'm no Strictly man generally but one or two of the Morel's Grooves series I heard were tasty. RE: (313) old Strictly Rhythm 12s
I remember the first time I went into the old BPM Records in San Francisco (their Polk St. place, with Digit, EFX and RaSoul's studio upstairs) and it seemed like half the store was the Strictly bins. That was 1993 I think. Strictly was really much wider in scope than most labels and put out a great many classics and unknown but great cuts, and maybe seven times as much club fodder and stuff verging on total trash. There's no way to know (other than the obvious classics) without listening. fh - >Well, it really depends on what kind of sounds you dig from that period. >Still, I can point out a few. > >My picks (and sometimes why): > >Deep, instrumental: > SR 12 007 Logic The Warning / The Final Frontier > SR 12 017 Logic The Difference / I Got Somethin' > SR 12 020 Underground SolutionLuv Dancin' >**Early Roger S! while hardrive's "deep inside" may be overplayed, if you get its initial release with 4 additional trax, those are all some of MAW's best work, really. i dont have a ton of SR records, but the barbara tucker 12"s are really good vocal house from NYC in the early 90s as well. ive never heard a good one on there by george morel! tom
RE: (313) old Strictly Rhythm 12s
God... I haven't heard the term 'Big room' in an eternity Francis. :) While I'll throw my hand up and admit to talking completely out of my arse when it came to Frankie Bones, if there's one thing I know, it's that 'Higher State of Consciousness' signalled the end of Josh Wink's negligible credibility. It is crap of the lowest order. But regarding the initial question (and to echo Francis a bit), the stuff that I know that I love is the Logic stuff (absolutely essential - Wayne Gardiner is the dude of all dds and then some, and I'll prolly take this stuff off your hands at a good price if you don't want it because I only have it on CD at the moment), all of the Wamdue stuff (not a duff bit that I'm aware of), the Dan Curtin "Time Undefined I and II" (good, but not great, but if you're in to Curtin, you'll like them), and the Basement Jaxx remix of Lil Mo' Yin Yang (which is fairly massive). Be careful that you get the remix. Don't know anything about the original. I'm prolly forgetting some other stuff. Oh yeah, I'm sure there was some DJ Sneak stuff, which sits well along-side his other stuff of that time, but would be hard to recommend wholesale, as it isn't the best stuff he did, and he did four records/month at one point. There are also some Wamdue remixes kicking about. I think one of them is of Mars Ford or something. That's worth getting for sure. As for the normal Strictly Cannon, I am ignorant. I'm sure I've missed some gems. Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
