RE: (313) Aril Brikha

2007-04-07 Thread Christopher O'Grady
Tiesto is probably a better example than Derrick May for the point you are
trying to make. Aril Brikha is a modest little guy from Sweden. I have
this wonderful memory of dancing like a maniac directly in front of his
setup at a live performance in Paris. After his set I said thank you! and
he replied no, thank you! You really kept my energy going! (or something
to that effect).

What's not to respect?

I listened to his Kompakt release several times today trying to see why
anyone would call it crap; I like it very much actually. But either opinion
is subjective.

I realized what a waste of energy it was to think of music in terms of love
or hate, good or crap. I either like something or I am indifferent. But
that takes the fun out of beard stroking techno snobbery.

Judging from the responses already I am going to assume that this post is
going to spark off a few more interesting responses.

I can't really knock Derrick and to be honest I love his motor mouth and
I don't really see that lots of people have fallen in line with him Rob.
Like Clarke he gives good interview...

I've also been puzzled why he hasn't released a whole bunch of stuff but
that's really his call, he's still wicked behind the decks but I can wait to
hear his new stuff. I know he a a load of stuff slated for release about
3yrs ago from himself and other artists but it's never seen the light of day
yet.

(313) D May motor mouth 4/26

2007-04-07 Thread J.T.
Speaking of D May, he's going to be giving a lecture here in Chapel Hill, NC on
Thursday, April 26th, at a site on the university campus (as part of the little
annual local electronic music festival here)...I forget what the topic is, but
well something about black music and dance music in the USA. Afterwards, he's
doing a DJ set, as is Stacey Pullen, and $tinkworx (me) and I think Ja'Maul
Redmond (whatsup!) are playing live. I have no idea what kind of event this is
going to turn out to be, dance music in an academic forum ugg hmmm e
maybe...but well if anybody is in the southeast usa or on the east coast, maybe
you'd be interested in coming...get in touch if so.

Re: (313) 313 kids get free ipods. (long reply)

2007-04-07 Thread diana potts

I have to agree with the editorial on this one. I
think it largely depends on the age of the kid (ears
aren't fully developed until adulthood- why would you
put an ear bud in a kid's ear I never understand) with
the bud effect-even though buds make the music sound
like CRAP anyways. If it's HS kids and they are using
it for date transport, why not just use a
thumb-drive-it's far more LESS distracting. Audio
files of lectures can be emailed.

In many classrooms speaker systems are being used
because students DO respond better to surround sound
voice. But an ear bud?... is such removal of the
classroom connection-it's removing the personal
touch. It's hard to imagine because I'm always
interacting with my students to gage where their
understanding and processing is in class.

This kind of funding could have come from a grant,
and cost tax payers nothing. An important part of
education technology is the training. Are the teachers
and students being positively trained? With such a
HUGE roll out Apple should have said 'be our guinea
pig and we'll give 'em to ya for free' almost like
they did with those horrible macs a few years back.

My 6th graders are gadget whores at their early age.
My ipod Mini is considered HUGE to them, though I
laugh as they drool over such novelty gadgets like the
razor and lesser quality mp3 phones.

My school is 1mill over budget, this is a wave that
education is seeing right now- schools are entering a
near crisis mode. One that we haven't seen in many,
many years.

Just as an FYI, Kindergartners are now being
standardized tested for achievement.

Hi list,

Is there anybody with a copy of No Ufo's they'd be willing to sell,
or does anyone know where to buy a new copy, if such a thing exists? A
friend of mine is looking for a copy and had trouble finding one. I'm
not going crazy searching since it not for me, but I figured I'd ask
on the list at least.

Thanks!
