(313) Mobile Music Workshop 2008 - Call For Submissions
*Apologies for cross-posting* Please forward 5TH INTERNATIONAL MOBILE MUSIC WORKSHOP 2008 13-15 May 2008, Vienna, Austria Call for Submissions: Deadline 10 February 2008 http://www.mobilemusicworkshop.org The Mobile Music Workshop 2008 is the 5th in a series of annual international gatherings that explore the creative, critical and commercial potential of mobile music. They are inspired by the ever- changing social, geographic, ecological, emotional context of using mobile technology for creative ends. We are looking for new ideas and ground-breaking projects on sound in mobile contexts. What new forms of interaction with music and audio lie ahead as locative media, ubiquitous networks, and music access merge into new forms of experiences that shape the everyday? Can they change the way we think about our mobile devices and about walking through the city? The emerging field of Mobile Music sits at the intersection of ubiquitous computing, portable audio technology and New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME). It goes beyond today’s personal music players to include creative practices of mobile music making, sharing and mixing. The mobile setting challenges existing notions of interfaces and interaction, stretching music to new creative limits. The workshop has been at the forefront of this innovative area since 2004. Past editions of the event have taken place in Amsterdam, Brighton, Vancouver and Göteborg in collaboration with the Viktoria Institute, STEIM, Waag Society, Futuresonic, NIME and others. The 2008 edition of the workshop will be held in Vienna, one of the hotspots in the European for laptop, glitch, and electronic music. Hosted by the University of Applied Arts, it will feature three evenings of performances and installations, an exhibition in the heart of the city, invited speakers, paper presentations, posters and demo sessions as well as hands-on tutorials. Besides the workshop proceedings, we will publish a catalogue that will gather key contributions from the last 5 years. We invite artists, designers, academic researchers, hackers, industry professionals and practitioners from all areas, including music, technology development, new media, sound-art, music distribution, cultural/media studies and locative media and more to present and discuss projects, prototypes, applications, devices, performances, installations, theoretical and historical considerations. IMPORTANT DEADLINES Submission deadline: 10 February 2008 Notification of acceptance: 14 March 2008 Submission deadline for final papers: 14 April 2008 Registration deadline: 14 April 2008 PARTICIPATE Please upload your submission in any of the three following categories at http://ocs.waag.org/. Submissions will be peer- reviewed by a committee of international specialists in the field. Papers We invite submissions of workshop papers presenting new projects, approaches or reflections exploring the topic of mobile music. Potential submissions could include but are not limited to mobile music systems or enabling technologies, interface design, legal issues, user studies, ethnographic fieldwork, social implications, art pieces and other areas relevant to mobile music. Accepted paper authors will be given a time slot during the workshop for presentation and discussion of their work. They are encouraged to bring a demo of their work if possible. Format: 4 pages in ACM SIG publications format (for templates, see http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html). More artistic submissions are free to pay less attention to the academic or technical detail of the format, and to include more media instead. Posters and Demos We also invite the contribution of posters and demos that document work-in-progress projects or ideas in similar areas of mobile music technology as the papers. There will be a poster and demo presentation session where attendees will be able to discuss work with the authors. The most robust of the demos will be offered the opportunity to exhibit to the general public during the open sessions (although this is not mandatory). Posters will be on display for the duration of the conference. Format: 2 pages in ACM SIG publications format (for templates, see http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html). More artistic submissions are free to pay less attention to the academic or technical detail of the format, and to include more media instead. Installations and Performances We invite mobile art installations and performances in the genres of mobile music and locative audio. There will be an exhibition space in central Vienna, and the possibility to show work in the city. There will also be a series of evening performances/concerts/parties. Format: Please follow loosely the ACM SIG publications format (for templates, see http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html)
Re: (313) Recordstores NYC
My favorite shop for new music is Halcyon, in Dumbo (Brooklyn): halcyonline.com A1 is great for used Disco and Hip-Hop, as is The Sound Library on Ave A. There's a new, smaller shop on East 2nd street b/w Ave A B (or maybe B C?) that had a decent selection of used disco, house and reggae. I can't recall the name offhand... I'd also suggest Academy Records in Williamsburg (somewhere around N6th street and Berry St.) they have a nice diverse selection of stuff, though mostly used. Vinyl Market keeps somewhat irregular hours, as it's only employee is the owner, Kazu. Turntable Lab is good, though small. I haven't hit Dope Jams, as it's inconveniently located for me. As for Syntax: John D is not the owner, he's the Domestic Buyer. Mike M and Stas are/were the owners. I'm going there tomorrow to pick up some of their stock so I'll see what's up. They still have lots of stuff, they've just stopped buying new music and are liquidating their backstock. Unique also apparently closed up shop, but I haven't heard any details yet. Have fun in NYC! e Scatalogics 205 15th Street #A7 Brooklyn, NY 11215 talent copies but genius steals www.scatalogics.com Out Now!: 1. Ulysses The Wanderings of a Handkerchief Suicide Recordings, feat. Jamie Jones remix. 2. Jordan Dare Voyeur11 (Boom Music) Sodium Records, feat. Ulysses Remix. 3. Ulysses Resistance Sodium Records, feat. Tony Rohr Nick Chacona Remixes. I really like Vinyl Market, on E 10th St and 1st Ave. It's got a really small sign, and it's not right on the corner, but maybe one or two buildings west on 10th St. Lots of UR, seem to remember the whole Dust Science catalog there, ran into Paul Kendrick of the list randomly. My favorite shop for new music is Halcyon, in Dumbo (Brooklyn): halcyonline.com i've never been to halcyon either...dunno why none of my (other) friends go there.. A1 is great for used Disco and Hip-Hop, as is The Sound Library on Ave A. a1 can be great for everything. freestyle, italo, old house and techno as well...if you go here often enough to snatch the super-goodies before someone else does..last time i was there i picked up keynotes (incognito #1) for $15, mint, i'm very happy with it. they have bonafide sections for nu groove, dj int'l, trax, strictly, detroit, etc etc, though the prices aren't always a steal...it's definitely worth checking for house and techno, blues, jazz, anything really. where on A is the sound library? I'd also suggest Academy Records in Williamsburg (somewhere around N6th street and Berry St.) they have a nice diverse selection of stuff, though mostly used. is it academy that just opened a new store in manhattan in december? i think so. i went opening day, but i can't remember what it was called, or quite where it was. somewhere in the lower east side as well i think. As for Syntax: John D is not the owner, he's the Domestic Buyer. Mike M yeah minto corrected me on that too, doh. anyways, he was good to work with. but overall syntax was a pretty mediocre experience, late payments, very minimal support, no real personal interest in what we were doing or personal relationships etc...same story with watts...we never had much of a positive experience with american distrib.. jt
(313) Ron Murphy
It is with a heavy heart and great regret that I announce the passing of Ron Murphy. I was called with the news that he died of a heart attack sometime today. Most of you already know of Ron and how important he was to the creation of Detroit techno so there's not much else I can say. A fund will be setup hopefully tomorrow to help with funeral expenses. I'll pass on any additional details as I get them. Mike Grant

I can hear him ranting in my head right now... Respect to a legend who did it his way and gave so much to the music world. I am too stunned to adequately eulogize his legacy or his unforgettable character. To all those who were close to him personally, I'm so sorry for your loss. Keep us posted Mike

Re: (313) Ron Murphy
in the history of detroit techno, there are so many artists who made it all happen. but it wouldn't have been as remotely successful without the seemingly endless encouragement, generosity, blood and sweat of a handful of people behind the scenes. without question ron murphy was one of the top people on that particular list. motown murphy was the man, anyone who met him will inarguably tell you that. and while the daily humdrum press of the motor city will continue to report on the auto show, new casinos and plans to rebuild downtown..there'll be a couple hundred people and dozens more kindred spirits and expatriates who will be quietly reflecting over the next few days on the massive contributions he made to detroit's cultural legacy. thank you, sir.
