Re: Summer techno
'Excursions into Techno' was a great series and the MFA release came with a box to house the other 12's inc David Caron - Fantasy on a Fantasy and iO - Claire. Reminded me to check that film out. With now getting some darker evenings at the end of summer here I've rediscovered the Juan & Moritz Borderland :Transport album. I think this one got overlooked at the time but I prefer it over the previous release. > > -- Forwarded message -- > From: Philip McGarva > To: 313@hyperreal.org > Cc: > Bcc: > Date: Tue, 6 Jul 2021 12:11:57 +1000 > Subject: Summer techno > Well it’s winter here in Oz but since I watched ‘The Man from Mo’ Wax’ I > been exploring a few ‘Excursions’ releases I missed at the time, especially > Midnight Funk ‘Firescratch’ > > >
Re: New 313-relevant stuff
All great recommendations Tristan. I picked up the Nuron 2x12". Very clean pressing. I always thought Nuron/Fugue was perhaps Stasis or B12 but maybe really is a return of the mystery racing car driver. The Parabellum Detroit compilation from Rick Wilhite and Delano Smith is out on vinyl now having been on bandcamp for a while and full of big names and all decent tracks which is rare for a comp. Erik Travis - Legends came out later last year, quite a variety of styles and great tracks in there if you're into faster electro -Aly > > > -- Forwarded message -- > From: Tristan Watkins > To: 313 <313@hyperreal.org> > Cc: > Bcc: > Date: Mon, 10 May 2021 13:01:29 +0100 > Subject: New 313-relevant stuff > Yo. > > A couple of (313) things I thought people would want to know about. > > New Strand https://strand313.bandcamp.com/album/silicon > > Newish Russ Gabriel on Ferox. > https://russgabriel.bandcamp.com/album/off-centre. Juan - interview on older Cybotron
Maybe one more for the gear-heads but it covers Juan's early days and writing with Rik. Teases a bit with lost tracks and potential new album. https://reverb.com/news/interview-juan-atkins And regarding that video Kent posted, that AI vocal extraction result is scarily good!
Drexciya by numbers
I'm not too sure what to think about this. I guess this is a techno equivalent of publishing guitar tab in a magazine. Thankfully they haven't included an ableton template to go with it. https://www.attackmagazine.com/technique/deconstructed/drexciya-black-sea/
Re: Books on Detriot Techno
I'd echo the books Baars recommended below. Tim Barr also did the rough guide to techno book, though it wont cover much that's not in Techno Rebels. There's also Simon Reynolds Energy Flash. I haven't read it in decades and though it covers some Detroit within, it drew ire from various folks as its quite opinionated. History of House is a good wee book, though harder to find, on the studio equipment side and has interviews with the big names. -- Forwarded message -- From: baars To: David Mansfield , "313@hyperreal.org" < 313@hyperreal.org> Cc: Bcc: Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2020 20:33:04 + Subject: Re: Books on Detriot Techno Strictly relating to Detroit Techno I don't know, but you should check Tim Barr's 'Kraftwerk. From Dusseldorf to the future', and maybe Kodwo Eshun's 'More brilliant than the sun' although that is more like poetry about afro-futurism (but loaded with references to Drexciya, UR and Jeff Mills). And if you want to read more about dance music preceding techno, you can't go wrong with the books by Tim Lawrence. -- *From:* David Mansfield *Sent:* Friday, February 28, 2020 6:34 PM *To:* 313@hyperreal.org <313@hyperreal.org> *Subject:* Books on Detriot Techno Hello Everyone, I have read Dan Sicko's Techno Rebels and enjoyed it. Haqq - Drexciya Interview
Funny to think of the mystery and intrigue about Drexciya back in the 90s on this list (still in the FAQ) and here we have an interview with James Stinsons mum... https://youtu.be/rKUta8lamDk
Roland article
This is one for the nerds. It doesn't really say that much but the photos are good, including the photo of the 909 developer, Atsushi Hoshiai, with his ride cymbal that he sampled and used for the 909 sound, which has probably graced a good number of records over the years. http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?2065
2014 records tracks and things
Hi Folks, I didn't see much chatter on here about favourite records in the last year. I guess there's plenty of end-of year lists on all the usual blogs/sites but figured I'd mention a couple I'd been playing over the festive break here: M Print (M Plant) - Rob Hoods 3CD set. There's no shortage of Rob Hood records on my shelves but I liked the idea of having a collection on CD to play in the car and particularly interested in the remixes/edits. Its all good stuff and its striking that none of it sounds too dated, given its a 20yr compilation. I was most looking forward to the new version of minus (although is it possible to improve on perfection?) which is an interesting take and adds a bit of percussion. But I was more surprised and impressed with the other 3rd CD tracks like Externus Oblique and Monkey. My only comment is that as an M Plant compilation it would've been nice to have some memory foundation or pulsinger but maybe that's a licensing thing. Adventures in Techno Soul 3 (Ferox) - Ok this is not directly 313 material however its in the right ballpark and one of the tracks is called 'something 'bout the D'. Pretty strong tracks all round though my picks are the 1st (Darren Harris - Orion Nebula) which is spacey melodic electro with hints of toytronic. Nebraska has a catchy bass loop and the final Fred P track (Perspective) is deep space late night jam. With a Fred P link via NY 'The Corner' label, Anthony Parasoles 'Pressure' 12 is nice. I noticed someone had described in a discogs comment as Basic Channel meets Terrence Dixon. That's not a bad description. And then I'll link via a Parasole remix to Steracs 'Hypnoticus' on Delsin. Brilliant title, strangely catchy track and equally worthy remixes too. Anybody want to comment or recommend other stuff? -Aly

(313) Re: Drexciya Research Lab
Different group but you would do well to check out Ultradyne If you are interested in music by Gerald Donald and James Stinson, including Drexicya, then you probably have found this website called Drexiya Research Lab. There's been some activity on it more recently, including an updated discography of related music. I'm trawling through YouTube via Discogs since I missed a lot of this great work. I want to hear it all but haven't got the deep pockets required, so glad some can be found on YouTube for now. I'm doing my own research. http://drexciyaresearchlab.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/drexciya-related-discography.html When I first heard Drexciya on Underground Resistance in the later part of the 90's I was instantly hooked. That and Direct Beat along with Red Planet and Underground Resistance. I'm more into Hip Hop than I am into House. I like the raw bass and rebel sounds from Neil Landstrumm, and original electronic music from Aphex Twin. I'm considering all those influences, Detroit electro and techno being very significant. I was too young to catch the first waves, and a strong appetite for more of this kind of music. Electro-techno, techno-bass, techno-soul. Any suggestions?

(313) icon - 8th wonder
I've wondered for a while about the similarity between Stacy Pullen - 8th Wonder track on the True People compilation and Rhythim Is Rhythim - Icon. Both came out around the same time (circa 1996) although I think Icon was recorded 1991 (?) Just similar compositions or were the guys sharing studio/discs/sequences ? Both great tracks anyway, though I'll go with 8th Wonder as a fav.
Re: (313) icon - 8th wonder
Cheers for that link, never come across that site before. Playing the tracks side by side, they're not as similar as I had in my mind. On 7 December 2012 17:08, kent williams chaircrus...@gmail.com wrote: They use similar pad sounds, but they are in different keys, and the chord progressions are in slightly different. (313) Re: roll call?
on the list on and off since '97/'98 I think. Mainly lurking I guess. Made the trip to Detroit back in 2001 and met a few folk. Like others have mentioned, with family life etc I'm not so fussed about digging for tracks or late nights. Not much happens out here in the Scottish Highlands anyway. The recent RubaDub 20th party in Paisley was my 1st night out in the city in years as my evenings are more like kids story, glass of laphroaig, sp1200. -Aly

RE: [313] Fragile
I can't remember exactly but I think in an interview with Jockey slut a few years ago Stacy Pullen said something about Transmat songs not using samples, but it was ok to use samples on Fragile. Like I say, I'm not 100% sure and might be getting completely mixed up with something else. Maybe that interview is online somewhere? Why did they ever start Fragile btw.? I mean loads of stuff on Fragile could have been Transmat, i always wondered why they had two labels... However most producers are single entities. You rarely see large groups (or groups at all) in our field of music. I gather this is because once that happens, autonomy of production is lost and most producers like to have total control over their work. If you had Earth-Wind-Fire sized electronic groups (7 members or maybe even more), then you could more than likely see these people get out front and play one (maybe even two) instruments real time live. Its humanly impossible to control 10-15 instruments with only one person playing all of them live, so most people use Midi Sequencers to control playback of the tracks because they dont have 10 brains, 20 arms, and 20 eyes to all monitor, play, and time 10 or more different instruments at once. Improvisation can still occur, that's for sure, but the experience you seem to be after is one more based around other forms of music played live. cya, Kieran
