Is Houle being serious here? It's like being meta-jaded, I can't
possibly wrap my head around this kind of thing. It's like making fun
of yourself for making fun of yourself, and then laughing at everyone
else for listening to you do it. Or making a trite techno song about
how trite people think techno is? My brain hurts.

From the Minus website:
On Techno Vocals (as with all Houle productions) each sound is
perfectly realised, commanding its own space with metronomic
discipline. The rigid drum patterns, analogue explosions, regimented
snare rolls, laser guided effects and delayed bleeps interact with
supreme efficiency, while the arrangement is mapped out with cool,
calculated intent. The result is a totally robust example of A-grade
techno that's really brought to life by the self-referential, pitched
down vocal hook!

Not trying to be entirely negative, it just seems like a case of being
too cool for school and then taking it to some strange other level.
The result is a totally robust example of A-grade techno that's
really brought to life by the self-referential, pitched down vocal
hook!

They can't really be serious about that, can they?
Just curious if anyone has an opinion about this kind of thing.

I mean, there's lot of arguments about Juno's 'superstore' kind of

Diplo's 'Florida' LP is one of last year's best albums IMO. Everyone
into moody downtempo with Timbaland-ish beats, mixed with abstract
jazzy and cinematic tones and carefully manipulated sampling should
check it out. Seriously, words do no justice to some of those tracks.

And there is also the heavy, HEAVY dancefloor bomb 'Diplo Rhythm', in a
uk grime meets Autechre meets old school electro meets rio baile funk
(!). Not easy to slip in a set, but when done right... oh my god.

Re: (313) Favorite downbeat/leftfield/chill-out labels and artists?

2005-08-03 Thread Antonio Alves Felizardo

Some recs:

-- The Exposures - Lost Recordings LP (Eastern Developments)

New excellent project from Jan Jelinek on Prefuse's label, on a
downbeat tip.

-- Danny Breaks - The Outer Dimension LP (Alphabet Zoo)

Seriously twisted hip-hop instrumentals, check!

-- Elmore Judd - Angel Sound LP (Above the Clouds)

Bedroom made album by London based artist, sweet melodies and vocals.

-- Koushik - Be With LP (Stones Throw)

Hiphop meets Folktronica (haha!). Gorgeous!

-- Jimmy Edgar - Bounce Make Model LP (Warp)

Timbaland meets Detroit, with a twist.

-- Populous - Queue For Love LP (Morr Music)

One of my fave albums of the year so far. Deep and layered downbeat
arrangements.

-- Sa-Ra - Dark Matter Pornography Mixtape CD (??)

The future of MTV music? If you haven't heard of them, you seriously
need to check their production and remix works out. Awesome stuff.

-- Anything on Bully, Sixtoo's label, check: VA - Bully Lunch Money
Singles Vol. 1 // Elektro4 - Keystroke One LP

Check Juno for samples!

(313) KDJ33 - Ampapella

2005-07-31 Thread Antonio Alves Felizardo
I've been seeing this record on ebay going for crazy prices, since
supposedly, it was only available for sale on the recent Mahogani tour.

Does anyone on the list have it and doesn't mind posting a mp3 sample?
At least some of us would like to know if it is worth it... 8)

Thanks

Re: (313) Track ID Big 50 set the 2nd

2005-07-26 Thread Antonio Alves Felizardo

Just some more IDs please :)

Mike, or anyone else, what are the first three tunes in the set, after
Amp Fiddler's 'I'm Doing Fine'. Classics I know, but I can't remember
them :(

By the way, a friend just listened to a new Carl Craig remix of a
Laurent Garnier tune (off 'The Clouding Making Machine) in a London
store and he said it was the bomb! Any opinions on this?

Thanks in advance

Re: (313) MM's Freaky Motherf*cka

2005-07-11 Thread Antonio Alves Felizardo
It sounded exactly like this when they played in Lisbon a couple of
weeks ago. There could be different versions of the same track though.

By the way, did anyone grab the Nikki-O LP on sale only during the gig?
It says Available only on 05 tour, IIRC. I got mine from Kenny
Dixon's grandmother (or so she told me :P) for 20 euros. Some great
tracks on there!

Well I've only heard it live and I dont remember it sounding like
that. The bass was different, the beat was different. This version is
too deep, when he played it a few weeks back in London it was a lot
more raw and jackin'!

(313) Mathew Jonson remixes Nelly Furtado?

2004-09-15 Thread Antonio Alves

Apologies if this has been discussed before.

While wondering in the Mutek site I found this:

... Mathew Jonson, known for his minimal house compositions on the
Itiswhatitis label, has worked with artists like Luciano (‘Alpine
Rocket’ on Perlon) and remixed the likes of Nelly Furtado...

and then further investigation led me to this:

http://www.kbig104.com/iplaylist/album/574127/

Check the credits. Has anyone heard this? I tried to check Discogs but
I've been getting errors when loading individual releases pages.
