Well, I've seen the comp and it had 5 LP's. (The 2CD has quite a few tracks
more). So i guess they shipped the faulty ones to the States.

What do you mean, none of the music is House or Techno, atleast one of the
songs (The Kevin Saunderson Remix of Cameo in the end does catalogue as
house or techno in my book)

 especially the high quality versions!
(It does make me wonder why none of the music is techno or house, but no
one
 is perfect)

first mixer is fernando grasso

2001-04-20 Thread Jay Cee
Well it just happens that the pioneer died a few days ago...so I'll FW this
info about the first mixer

Francis Grasso, a pioneering club disc jockey credited with first mixing
records together in the late 1960's by matching their rhythms, was found
dead on March 23 at his home in Brooklyn. He was 52.

The cause is unknown, pending results of an autopsy.

Mr. Grasso was born in Brooklyn and, at an early age, discovered a talent
for music, playing drums, guitar and saxophone. After he was injured in a
motorcycle accident, a doctor told him that dancing would be a good form of
physical therapy and soon he was a fixture on the Manhattan club scene.

In 1968 at a Central Park club called Salvation 2, Mr. Grasso went behind
the turntables for the first time when the club manager asked him to fill in
for the house D.J., who was ill. Soon, Mr. Grasso had the job.

With an understanding of the psychology of the dance floor, he slowly began
to retool the job of the D.J. As he saw it, his job wasn't simply to play
records, it was to keep the crowd on the dance floor. The best way to do
that was to make one song seem to stretch on forever, without a break. This
helped create the notion of the disc jockey as artist and live remixer.
Working with two seven- inch singles, at first he would start a new song on
the same beat that ended the previous song (by holding the record still as
the turntable spun below it, a technique known as slip- cueing).

Later, he began matching the beats of records, trying to keep two songs
playing simultaneously for as long as possible, which was an extremely
difficult task since most turntables then lacked conveniences like pitch
control.

One of his best-known tactics was his simultaneous playing of
percussion-heavy songs, like Chicago Transit Authority's I'm a Man, with
sexually charged vocals, like Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love,
anticipating the rise of disco.

Mr. Grasso developed and refined many of these techniques when he moved his
headquarters to Sanctuary, a hedonistic club in Hell's Kitchen, and presided
over the dance floor there until it was closed by city authorities in 1972.

In 1971 the movie Klute featured a scene with Mr. Grasso working at the
Sanctuary. When the club closed, he worked as a D.J. off and on until 1981,
when he left the profession for good and found a job working in
construction.

Re: [313] stuff (what not in a Franois K set???)

2001-01-24 Thread Jay Cee
Still some people are missing the point. It is an extra, something you can use
to play ot new tracks.

I know some of you who make music and spinn, might consider it to use to test
their tracks (alltough you can do that on CD Too ;-)).

And For the guy who posted that it didn't belong in a François K dj set, I'd
say
have you seen him play out recently. The man used CD's, and a laptop last time
I
saw him. (my bet is he's going to use it in the months to come).

JayCee

its not the technology, its the way people use it. it has the potential to
produce something that sounds like music with minimal human input. i that
people are right be be wary of new technology which even further remove
coarse, unpredictable, human input which in turn may result in something
fairly sterile and uninvolving. not to say that it won't produce good
results as well. anyway it's all pretty abstract at the moment.

Philip you are The Man. That's what I was trying to say.

RE: [313] help needed for new techno website

2001-01-05 Thread Jay Cee
You're not asking for the impossible now are you. A picture of Mike
Banks...just

put on a hood and a motormask and pretend...and number 2 is even better, try
finding captain Cousteau and dive with him to the realm of Drexicya.

For the Frank De Wulf picture I'd say go to www.outsoon.be or something like
that and ask. Or better yet contact John Osselaer who's on this list, he has a
lot of contacts within the belgian/dutch scene.

good luck.

 Hi

I made this request a while ago, but I'm not sure if it was ever actually
 posted.
I am currently working a large techno website that is set to feature images,
bios, comprehensive discographies, soundbites and interviews with techno
artists worldwide. So far the site is looking good with about 75 artists
featured and the site should be ready to go live by the end of Febuary with
exclusive interviews from Alan Oldham, Ian O'Brien, Derrick May and more.
One area that is posing a problem however is getting hold of images of the
artists. I particuarly need to get hold of the following images.
 1.Mike Banks
 2.Drexcyia
 3.Moritz Von Oswald
 4.Frank De Wulf
 5.Vince Watson
 6.Tommy Musto
 7.Mundo Muzique
 8.Adam X

Thoght these images are of particular importance to the site, any personal
photos or images of techno artists worldwide would be greatly appreciated.
I'll be posting details of the site launch shortly, but if anyone wants any
 information please contact me privately.
 Peace
 Stewart

  I can go to anytime.

I remember hearing about a party that was held on the street.

And if you know of any other underground parteis in dec or jan, please
send me a little information, because I want to boogie, but not in cheasy

There will be a major big freak underground soundsystem party somewhere near
the
 harbour on 31 dec..
don't know the details, but I am sure someone else on this list knows'm

Sorry for the late reply. B-day this weekend and only now recovered enough to
go
trough my 313 mailbox. (had a blast at a verry big commercial party but with
Kevin, Derrick Stacey + Luke Slater playing in the Technoroom and Bob sinclar
Roger Sanchez(a big ego but does know how to rock a big hall with House)in
the
House Room.

I liked it a lot, calm cool sounding HouseTechno wit a tech-house flavor..Not
peaktime music but it does the trick for me
