everything he does seems to HAVE to have a concept or a reason, and, at times it comes across like he makes it all up after he's made the music to market it better. (to my un-cultured eyes anyway) reading the last couple of mails i'd have to agree - does anyone fall for this bullsh*t?
Re: (313) new Mills
Sorry to pile in here...philosophy background coming into play ;-) Mills chose the symbolic colour of white as the vinyl colour in the design to represent an unknown destination in space and/or time This is actually justified conceptually by thinking about a situation where you are in space which is completely white - no other information is being received by you. You therefore have no sense of change in your environment other than your inner sense of space and/or time, and so in an limited sense these things cease to exist. you would also have no sense of change, and no other information if the room was completely black or blue or green or yellow or red or orange. this is not philosophy.
Re: (313) new Mills
Right, right, I see...it's diss Mills time again!! At the end of the day, take it or leave it. If that's how HE chooses to do things, and you don't get it, then don't worry about it!! Take from it what you want. At the end of the day, the concepts don't sell the records to me, at all - but I certainly wouldn't attempt to belittle the ideas by imposing my opinion on others. Better than conceptualising about drug monkeys in a nightclub anyway - because that is just not challenging, in the slightest. don't tell me not to comment, and don't tell me i don't get it, i do, its bullsh*t.

Re: (313) new Mills
you would also have no sense of change, and no other information if the room was completely black or blue or green or yellow or red or orange. Absolutely, it's the uniformity that is key. Where did I state otherwise? well, your statement seemed to be backing the argument that the colour white was used for a special reason - but i was saying that based on your argument this couldn't be true, as you seem to now agree; the uniformity of white is no different from the uniformity of any other colour. this is not philosophy. Please, let me know what is! Knowing philosophy yourself, you'll know that simple examples and thought experiments then lead onto the kind of inquiry that perhaps you mean by 'philosophy'. I'm guessing - or were you just having a dig? sorry, i was just having a dig - philosophy is too big a subject for this list! :]
Re: (313) new Mills
we all know that white is not a colour but your remark is pedantic as it doesn't relate to or change the argument in any way. once again, white is not a colour...white is no colour, black is all. thats the point i think of blue room vs white room well, your statement seemed to be backing the argument that the colour white was used for a special reason - but i was saying that based on your argument this couldn't be true, as you seem to now agree; the uniformity of white is no different from the uniformity of any other colour. Re: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
Please, I didn't put any personal comments in my statement, and I'd appreciate it if you kept yours out as well. I'm not saying it's bad, or good, merely stating that there is a huge range of opinions on teh subject of techno, and one person's view of what techno is, can be completely contrary to someone els's. yeah but this isn't what brendan was saying Looks like you are an example of your very own statement, except you put personal slander in your mail :\ where? Seriously, you can't begin to classify techno by categories, yes you can. On Tue, 23 Mar 2004, john harvey wrote: it is unbelievable how so many people on this list take things completely the wrong way, and totally out of context, the statement below being a great example. Re: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
catagarisation is something that human beings do automatically - it's in our nature, and the reason we do it is for convenience and efficiency. In other words it makes life alot easier. How could we communicate on this list if we didn't do it? I might want to say i don't like hard-loop techno, and we all know what that means. How would i say that without using the catagary of hard loop techno and why would i want to try and say it in a less efficient way. classifying music is no big deal, it's about the human language. we should do it, we all do it, and it would be literally insane not to. there are no drawbacks to it either - it doesn't change the music. Seriously, you can't begin to classify techno by categories, yes you can. Well, I suppose you can also tighten your ass cheeks until they can break a pencil but why would you want to? MEK
Re: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
Detroit techno sucks there is nothing wrong with this statement - he may have heard it all and doesn't like detroit techno. the catagory of detroit techno is not problematic - he is using it to tell us what kind of music he doesn't like. if he doesn't really know what he is talking about then that's all to do with his own ignorance. I only listen to Swedish techno again so what? if people are narrow minded enough to say stupid things like this then thats their tough sh*t. i personally hate swedish techno! it's like saying we shouldn't catagarise tv programs so that people don't get locked into just liking sit-coms or science documentaries, or we shouldn't classify films as being horror or thriller.
Re: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
I think you're still missing the point. The point is not to not categorize, but that categorization is in and of itself, something that promotes closed-mindedness. i think that YOU are missing the point. catagorisation is not optional - it is an inate, fundamental and essential part of the human make-up. are you honestly suggesting that it would be reasonable to live in a world where you weren't allowed to describe anything? flyers saying that tonight we are playing music - great, that could really open my mind up to bon jovi or whatever random music might be playing. or describing to someone what music you like without mentioning any catagories? er..i like..er...well i can't say because i could be promoting closed mindedness! you're right, this thread is absolutely fuc*ing crazy. we're only talking here about describing music in words. what is so difficult?

(313) german to english translation please?
hello, can any german list members please translate the following review for me? Brilliante Platte. http://www.digital-soul.co.uk bleed * many thanks, john harvey

Re: (313) downloading, peer-to-peer, etc
if you get to hear the track for free three times, you could cheat by recording, to say, a stand alone cd recorder through the analogue input whilst you're auditioning the track. of course the use of d/a a/d converters would reduce sound quality a miniscule amount, but you wouldn't be able to tell. john
Re: (313) downloading, peer-to-peer, etc
i don't think that genuine artists expect to make vast amounts of money. the ones that do make alot, do so because they've sold alot of records.so if you believe in capitalism and supply demand, then you would have to conclude that they do indeed deserve the sums they get. of course people like michael jackson who have made it due to their past talent have no right to expect future success unless the material warrants it. its true that money isn't the overriding factor for genuine artists, but if they get it then fairplay to them. john - Original Message - From: Robert Taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Monday, November 03, 2003 7:48 PM Subject: RE: (313) downloading, peer-to-peer, etc In the old days, we had patrons and salons. Favoured musicians and artists were subsidised so they could dedicate all their time to creativity. Those days are over. These days, after some artists and musicians have become global stars, there is too much expectation from artists who expect worldly goods and eternal glory for their efforts - in reality medicocre artists are paid way too much to produce far too little, while more talented people languish because they feel left out by the music 'industry'. Real talent ignores all of that and just gets on with it, regardless of circumstances, whether they be adverse or nurturing. It is a 20th century capitalist construct to expect to make money doing what you enjoy - nobody else expects it, so why are artists any different? Or am I being too cynical? All I can say is that great music continues to be produced, regardless of whether people make any money out of it (in fact you could argue that a lot of great music comes out of difficult times), so that must count for something. And I feel that as globalisation calcifies in this century, the polarities which seem to be concomitant with it (again, I make no claims about causality, although I do have my personal views ;-) will become more pronounced, so the need for people to have commodity-priced music will only increase. eh? :]
Re: (313) downloading, peer-to-peer, etc
suggesting that you can only have soul in your music if it's free is a bit insulting to all the soulful labels and artists that do make money. its not a question of trading soul for money. many artists never compromise and make money. anyway, for financial gain surely the compromise should be the other way - taking the soul out of the music? john - Original Message - From: /0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, November 03, 2003 10:00 PM Subject: Re: (313) downloading, peer-to-peer, etc if you're asking *me*, I've already said I dont support dollar signs being attached to my music. thats just my own belief, and it doesnt threaten anyone else. this stemmed from me making music for years, and the anxiety that comes with releasing it, as opposed to doing it for the love of the art. my opinion only. I dont think musicians that make money from music are doing anything wrong... if I did, I'd be alienating a large number of my friends... I already traded the cash for the soul of my tracks, I've made my choice. and no one ever said the musicians dont DESERVE the money, but for me, selling tracks is like putting my daughter out on the corner to turn tricks. sure I COULD make money from music, but at the expense of my soul and the emotion behind the tracks. trying to address the torrent of emails I received in response in one conglomerate email, -Joe - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Monday, November 03, 2003 1:13 PM Subject: Re: (313) downloading, peer-to-peer, etc (i tend to believe, as a producer, that all music, as a form of art, should be free and that no one should make a living as a musician) most musicians don't - maybe nobody should make a living off of musicians they way that unscrupulous record labels do? (was Re: New Rekkids) Despite record sales being on a decline across the board, there is honestly no shortage of really excellent music out there - an oversaturation, really. It's just that we're bombarded by so much that unless you're a trainspotter or a DJ, the casual listener is lost in the deluge or confused by all the hair-splitting specialist subgenres. yeah! Personally I thought the sort of people on that site were idiots even when I was young, stupid and on drugs. And now that I'm old, sensible and straight...I still think they are idiots. First thing you should know is that isn't my site, I just found it some months ago, and as my title said it's cruel, sad and at the same time funny. And I don't really care that they are young, stupid and on drugs because lets face it - to dress like that you'd have to be. I'm of the opinion that clubs like Gatecrasher/Gods etc have done a lot of damage to the dance music scene, they've gobbled the underground and turned it into an empty fashion statement for the masses, 40 point dress codes and a high ticket prices and now they are left wondering why the clubs are empty. They've failed to support new artists and have forgotten many of the original players in a bid to grab as much money as they can along with the agents and so called big name DJ's. It's a sad state of affairs when it's more economical to fly in Red Planet from Detroit than bring a DJ up from London. And before you start I have nothing against people making a living but Oakey is on £7.5K an hour for some shows is really taking the p*ss and leaves no space for other people to come through. The media is also to blame because they are dependant on the £££ from the adverts so you never see a bad review/report. Although I should Add the people like Weatherall and Clarke don't conform to the above and seem to still be in it for the music and party rather than the pay check... And you have to ask the question of why shouldn't someone take the p*ss out of it, it deserves it IMHO. Take it easy, no-ones dead... (313) what is techno
Just wondering mister SPW why the hell you are the list because the only thing you try to do here is to us all we don't know sh*t about techno and apparently you are the only one who understands it all... I agree, I think some people are over-complicating things; this is a Detroit Techno list and there are two types in my mind - Jeff Mills hard loop techno, which is closer to the european sound, and Kenny Larkin soulful techno which I feel most people on this list are talking about. Or am I wrong?
Re: (313) Re: techno
The guy that mentioned Kenny Larkin he hasn't put out any new album in how long? I was talking about a type of music, I could have said Aril Brikha or countless others.

$tinkworx is the man behind downlow records. he's from the u.s. Does anyone know anything about $tinkworx and Macho Cat Garage, who have both put out some really excellent releases recently (on Delsin, Down Low and Viewlexx)? I think I read somewhere that $tinkworx was American. And Macho Cat Garage? They both have something for Dutch labels, anyway. to add to the confusement: i've read somewhere that the artists behind macho cat garage are rusty and randy from french guyana, and that legowelt only acted as the producers. the downlow website [http://www.downlowrecords.org] refers to french guyana as well... as for $tinkworx? i'm positive that she/he/they're neither from belgium nor texas; an honorary dutchman? hmmm... _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[313] off topic - cubase VST help
can anyone help me? I've just upgraded from cubase on the atari st to cubase VST v.3.7 for my pentiun 166. I can't get any midi signal in or out - it shows an output bar but none of my equipment is being sequenced, and there is no input whatsoever from my controller keyboard. It's driving me crazy. my souncard is only a soundblaster 16, but I won't be using it for audio recording - just midi sequencing. Is it because it's not an official version (no dongle)? Re: [313] off topic but fun nonetheless/acid
I agree, this is real acid house - i.e. no distortion on the 303, unlike the newer stuff. john. I'll go for some old Chicago tracks that aren't *amazingly* obvious, but leave aside modern stuff (I do think that Jeff Mills and Mad Mike are the John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders of the TB303 though, as evidenced on Seawolf and the Acid Rain series :) : Six Brown Brothers City Hall Dr Derelict That Sh*t's Wild Lidell Townsell Feel The Mood Mr Lee Never Gonna Change Hokus Pokus Different World (*especially* this track!) Because banging dance music is not, and never will be techno. Techno is unfortunately a dirty word. only idiots and musical beaurocrats are prone to labeling (music) We label music to make things easier - imagine going to a record store and there is only one section:- MUSIC. Re: [313] mix tapes
I can see what you are saying but I think if we had cdrs back in 1988 we would feel just the same about are mix tapes - the music was more special then because it was new, not because it had hiss. nowdays of cousre we can add as much analogue warmth as we want before the recording process using valve technology. john - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, August 22, 2002 8:51 AM Subject: [313] mix tapes loved this and thought i'd share it from maximum rock and roll Part 2: Tape Hiss= The Frequency of Love A mixtape, warm with the sonic coloration of analog, carries with it a sense of intimacy. Every person's tape deck records at a different signal-to-noise ratio, and the frequency of tape hiss varies from machine to machine. A mixtape holds the inaudible, subconscious personalization of the user's machine in the form of an ultra-high-frequency signal riding over the top of the music. This subliminally perceived hiss is a result of years of loving wear and tear on the user's machine..years of making mixtapes for relations won and lost..years of musical discovery...TAPE HISS carries with it the forethought of years of heartwrenching learning experiences. It is for this reason that the mixtape is more inherently emotional vehicle for communication than a burned CD. A CD is pristine digital audio...Zeros and ones sequenced in a manner that reproduce sounds when read by a laser that converts those bits into audible informations. Yes, those sounds may carry with them certain ideas or intentions, but there is something very cold and impersonal about a digital recording. A CD may be enjoyed equally as intensely as an audio tape, but the format carries with it a sense of detached aloofness that sets it apart from the vulnerablity of the mixtape. A CD may scratch, causing the audio to skip, but this is a very mechanical sort of defect...quite unlike the humanity of a tape which can stretch out, warping the sound..tapes can get dirty muffling the intentions of the recorded sound..tapes (like people) can snap. chris bickel mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
