i remember hearing about richie hawtin opening/running a club in windor a
few years back.
is there a story here or was i dreaming?
Was that 13 Below? Some pretty damn awesome nights there, but it's closed
now.

anyone have any info on the deep chord guys apart from the
www.deepchord.com site?
their releases are excellent.

Here's a hint: Put up your right hand and stare at the thumb. Speaking of,
they've got a new CD out now.
Is it a compilation of all of their releases so far, or are there any
exclusive tracks. I'll be picking that up
since I've missed the boat on this label but have been forced to ass shake
any time someone drops it.

Re: [313] Paul Oakenfold

2000-11-02 Thread Nathan DeYonker
Well, people get tense because Paul Oakenfold is not an appropriate topic
for the list. His personal musical evolution does not really
have anything to do with Detroit music, culture, or 313. So one would
expect sarcasm especially since there are so many trance-related email
lists out there,
along with websites, music magazines, etc. You're flame baiting here by
discussing the common anti-heroes of electronic music. I hope no one has
emailed you death threats or something like that, because people on this
list should have enough respect to realize there are people out there that
don't live on Woodward and only own KDJ records. Those people don't embody
what 313 is either.

oh well.

Re: [313]Detroit bread butter (Ax-20)

2000-08-08 Thread Nathan DeYonker

Well, we are not jumping on the offense that's for sure.
I seem to recall the beginning of this thread not naming ANY specific
names, and few people will deny that KDJ has a lot to do with where Detroit
electronic music is headed, so chill out.

If you're new to this list, maybe listen to people a bit before making
accusations and getting people tense about a racial issue that Detroit has
seemed to transcend of late.

2000-06-20 Thread Nathan DeYonker

Klaas-Jan said,

Hmmm one of the rules for starting a flame war is to insult people or the
use of sarcasm, just a tought... The internet is a great way to exchange
information but reply-ing with an e-mail like this is not spreading
information. There is no information found in these kind of replies. It
seems that there are are a lot of e-mails on the 313-list nowadays with
replies like this. Before posting a message to this list try to realise
that 800 people are getting your email. If you don't like some else his
statement please reply with some arguments and not just one-liners. Maybe
this would help to increase info-crap ratio.

PS. This is not a personal attack against Sean just something to think
over for all of us.

Klaas-Jan Jongsma
Right on Klaas, this list has been quite different since the festival time,
and I want to share a few thoughts with people that are in line with your
comments. When I joined this email list a bit more than 4 years ago, I did
not join because I wanted to give everyone my opinion, I joined because I
wanted to learn about Detroit techno. I think I had been on the list for a
half a year before my first post. There were people here with knowledge,
and these people were enjoying conversation about this knowledge. I was
AFRAID to post. This list was intimidating back then. Perhaps people are
joining 313 with different goals now. I still don't know jack shit about
Detroit techno, even after all these years of reading, going out, hanging
out, even making music... there's just too much to learn and too many
records to own. People shouldn't be getting assraped just because they
don't like a certain Atkins record, or think newer Detroit sounds better
than older detroit. How about entitling people to some opinions in our
moderately free world???

I also wish people would reply privately to posts a bit more, instead of
trying to get 313 credibility with their sarcastic or just plain rude
responses to people. Shut up and listen to people. Try talking about the
music for a change! It seems like no new spectacular records have come out
since the DEMF. This can't be true!

Anyway, I will try and get some positive discussion going?

1) Sean Deason played a bunch of rock jams from his Allegory and
Metaphor(s?) LP at the festival, I wasn't paying 100% attention to the
discussion a while back, but I thought there was some squabble over the
release of the album. Sean, is this out yet? Who ended up putting it out,
or who will put it out?

2) Derek Plaslaiko ended his intense acid workout at DEMF with The Beatles
Taxman from Revolver, which is I suppose the first acid record that I
own. Do people that know a lot about rock n roll consider Revolver to be
the first acid record? Pretty clever of Derek eh? Was anyone else in rock n
roll, or maybe jazz/soul or another genre experimenting with the
psychedelic sound that way way early?

3) The Sound Stream record that people were talking about is in my opinion
the most freaked out house 12 i've maybe ever heard. Someone was saying
there were Sound-Hack? records that have the same sound and might be the
same artist or artists. Can someone give more information/reviews on those
records and tell where to find them?

Re: [313] flames and music

2000-06-02 Thread Nathan DeYonker
I think it's very unfair to compare Rios with certain others that have been
kicked off this list. Rios has a different opinion about a few people
making electronic music than the majority of this list. so what? Perhaps
the most newbie mistake Rios has made has been to react to trolls.
Christian Bloch (sp) comes to mind with his discourse-promoting FUCK YOU!
message. That kind of shit more deserves being punted out of 313.

Gimme a D!

2000-05-30 Thread Nathan DeYonker
Yes... that was fun. My obligatory wake up late, hell-day at work follows
the festival.

So many of my newest and oldest friends were there. It was quite a
spectacle. To think what this list has given me in 4.5 short years... thank
you everyone!

To whomever was responsible in any way for throwing that event, congrats
and hugs! There will be more festivals. they don't even have to be BIGGER
and BETTER. They just have to bring people together and musically kick ass.
PLUR man! Rave on!

These people are in my mind the antithesis of posturing, politics,
ass-kissing, boring artistry, status validation, etc.:

Shake, Bill VanLoo, Sean Deason, Derek Plaslaiko, and Carlos Souffront.

They were responsible for a great deal of the laughs, smiles, whoops and
hollars, and having funs and they make me proud that 313/248/734 has been
my home for 19 of 21 years of life.

Besides any interaction involving aformentioned people, the high points for
me were:
meeting so many 313'ers this weekend and having the time to have real
conversation with them

Magda throwing down an asskicking party starting set.
I was thinking tikiman... what a stupid name. Then I heard those two
magic words, and went to check it out. Those tracks at a massive volume are
pretty phenomenal. Then they went into the live dub set, and I almost
crapped my pants. That's not something I was expecting to get out of this
festival.

Theorem's set has much improved since last time. Hooray!
Anything *67 related... Ectomorph was weird incarnate.
It's the third time I've seen both May and Hawtin, and last night they
played their most inspired, imo.
The Roots got the most crowd involvement. Their second hour was pure funk,
fun, and fucking around.
Shake! Shake! It was kind of kooky actually... Exactly 24 hours after BMG
had his patented poker face for the Ectomorph set, he was acting
like he was being tickled through Shake's entire set. The doubles he rocked
early on, and when he threw Tracks for my Mother were two memories...

Low points:
I missed Theo cause I was too tired, and Larkin and Fowlkes. : Maybe a
bulletin board near the fountain or the wall o tele's that have last minute
updates to the schedule. There was a bunch of stuff that I didn't need to
miss, but I missed cause I didn't realize they were going on. No Mos Def
either. poop.
Was A Guy Called Gerald playing live with the drummer and the singer in
pink? cause that was pretty awesome too. Certainly the best drum n bass I
heard this weekend whoever they were.

Don't egg me on!

Picked up a new release on deep chord at dance tracks this weekend,
wicked stuff, LoFi but extremely sophisticated gritty chain reaction
like house. What's the scoop on this label, I feel like I won't be
surprised when I find out.

yeah, you will.
