Okay; so my daughter down in the studio again
today. Just saw that she was digging in my vinyl
crates again and what was the sole record
she had sat in her lap with her:

Jeff Mills--Waveform Transmission Vol. 1 2 X EP (Tresor 11/1992)!

(Filed nowhere near the Basic Channel record she had
the other day, so not a coincidence;
my wife always said she was smart!)
She's been playing with unplugged keyboards (both
computer and music) lately; methinks it's time to
plug 'em in for her and see what results!

Subject: (313) hello, old friends.

Hi there.

I was browsing the (313) archives recently, and realized that it might
be fun to get back into this conversation after being absent for a few
years. I recognized a lot of the names that I saw in the 2006 archives
still, which is a good sign (Kent, Matt McQueen, Minto, Tristan, and on
and on), so hopefully the ground hasn't shifted beyond recognition.

What really sparked my thought of getting back to the list was when I
was writing the liner notes for the record of mine that just came out,
entitled chromedecay tracks pt2: 2001-2005. I included the (313) list
in my thank yous, because it really was such a huge part of my musical
development for a number of years, and I thought it fitting to get back
to it and see how things are.

http://www.chromedecay.org/releases/cd003/

A little catch-up may be in order here. In the last 4 years, I've been
actively producing music (some of which is compiled on chromedecay
tracks pt2), involved in the Windsor-Detroit collective Thinkbox, became
a father a few times over (3 kids now), and became a Christian. All of
these have changed my life in many ways, of course, and so I approach
things from a perspective that's different from 4 years ago, but
hopefully in a new and vibrant way.

For those of you who remember me, I'm glad to be back. For those of you
who weren't on this list when I left a few years back, I hope to have some
good conversations with you.

peace,

Bill Van Loo

I am also a Canadian going to school in the U.S., the difference being that
I live in Windsor and commute to Detroit, so I deal with this crap every
single day.

I don't think Laurent is overexaggerating at all because I have seen such
intrusion by U.S. officials first hand, amongst my fellow foreign students
and towards the many Windsorites that work in Michigan. I've also been a
student since pre-9/11 so I have seen the progression of security, and it
has gotten tighter and tighter.

I don't think anyone on this list, especially those living in the U.S.,
should brush of Laurent's claims as an overreaction. He is not the only
artist that this will happen to, and likely not the only artist that will
say screw it, all the trouble is not worth it.

There are already several artists (such as Steve Bug and Ricardo Villalobos)

that refuse to play in the U.S. due to political beliefs and security, and
I'm sure these tightened measures will only discourage more.

oh yeah, full respect for what they've done for techno in the US and their
stock was great both online and in the store. I'm not happy to see them
close. Their electro section was fantastic and the store was very organized
(and much smaller than I expected). I just recall that I asked about
something they were playing the store and they told me that they just sold
it. It was more the way in which they said it - like they wouldn't have sold
it to me even if they had more copies in the store. I also asked about some
other records they had on the wall behind the counter and the two guys
working were practically ignoring me. I was the only person in the store -
just to make that clear. Pretty f*cking awful.

I went across the street (Carmine) to Vinyl Mania and got great service and
spent most of my money there.

I was on the Tim Baker website the other day and it says he grew up in
Detroit. Now that is not true. I work in Ann Arbor, an I work with someone
who went to middle school and high school with him. At first I didn't
believe him until they just showed me yearbook pictures from his middle
school (scarllet) and High School (Ann Arbor Huron class of 85) Pictures.
Detroit and Ann Arbor are two different cites socially and geographic why do
people lie just to say the are from Detroit?

Speaking of Forever Monna, Ron Trent, etc. I saw that Prescription has
a new record out, first one in one in awhile, eh? , right? Gives Ron
Trent credit for AR on the label which i thought was kind of cute..
an artist name I didn't recognize, Didn't get to really carefully
listen but sounded just a tad too clean/smooth for me.. but it was OK.
On a big system with a room full of people grooving i could change my
mind ;)

Instead I spend my fistfull of meager cash on the Raiders of the Lost
Arp 4 (solo 2xLP by Mario Pierro) which is brilliant deep melodic
italo techno. I am quite into that whole Final Frontier distribution
stuff, the Pigna label especially.. cool bunch of artists.. Marco
Passarani is a huge detroit techno fan BTW... you can totally hear
that influence, however distant, in their moods/sounds, esp. that whole
m500 night drive thru babylon early detroit electro.

from what i hear, 30,000 was fairly normal back then. Juan's told me that
they used to sell 50,000 copies of Cybotron records mostly in the Midwest

Figure there were only very few electronic dance records back then, so
EVERYONE bought the same ones.

It could also be a gross exageration.

Of course that's true - the amount of money we are talking about is
pitiful if you view it as an income - but if it's money that drives you,
then Detroit Techno and the like is not, and never will be, the place to
find it. If you want to make money from music, then you have to have a
product that more people can latch onto, ie something more mainstream.
Or, as previously mentioned, you can try to make money as a performer -
for example, even if Jeff Mills were to sell 10,000 copies of each Axis
release, it would still leave him with less money than a single big gig.

The point is, in my opinion, that we produce, sell and buy this music
because we love it - music, like all art, is something to spend our
money on, not a way of making it. To be an independant label manager,
you basically have to accept that you will never see any more money from
a release than you would get from a nights work in a bar, at best. You
do it because you want to, not because you can make a living from it.
And most people lose badly - in another example, word has it that Andy
Weatherall lost over £60,000 over the lifetime of his excellent
Emissions label...

Not wishing to be overly idealistic about it, but the fact is, there is
no money in our scene - so it's a waste of time and energy trying to
find it
(IMO!)

That's true - the mark-up on 400 records at that price would be about
£14 -
take away £1 for postage and admin etc, they'd still make about £5000
for selling through all copies, which they will undoubtedly do. Split

between the label and the artist, it's still a pretty hefty cut, much
more than they'd ever get on a standard 12 release...

I don't know what the split is (I assume it's not 50-50, but for the
sake of argument ... ), but if what you're saying is true, I'd have to
put out a record (in this way) every two weeks to match a decent (read:
long-term, many years of experience) Engineer's salary.

What a conundrum. We (rightfully) piss and moan about 16-quid record
prices, but even in the best of circumstances (the aforementioned
scenario), it doesn't even provide a (slightly) comfortable living.

And I don't see any solution to this situation, either.

No wonder KDJ doesn't get out of bed for less. Sure glad I'm not trying
to live as a musician ... *phew*

New Virus Alert!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by

This
virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet

where vital information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in
the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your

virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to
reboot.
When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus
destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk.
Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York,
according
to news broadcast by CNN www.cnn.com http://www.cnn.com ). This alert
was
received by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with
subject A Virtual Card for You. As soon as you get the mail, delete it.
Please pass on this mail to all your friends. Forward this to everyone in

Jeff Mills has changed the way all of us think about Detroit techno. He make
his music the way he wants to. He plays his records the way he wants to. We
all do the exact same same when we make our music and spin our records. But,
sometimes I think just because he's popular and makes money doing what we all do
I feel that some people are to judgemental on him. Imagine doing what you love
and making a good living at it. Music is and artform that society labels,
packages and sells. And just because someones music sells well doesn't make them
a sell out.
