Re: (313) RIAA and mp3 downloads (was RE: (313) final scratch)

2004-02-10 Thread Trevor Wilkes

FWIW, a person I know works for a major label and is quite heavily
involved with that label's anti-p2p efforts. He tells me that while the
majors are confident that the next few years will see legitimate mp3
services eclipse the illegal ones in terms of visibility and prominence,
they have effectively given up on a certain generation of listeners,
who they don't think they'll ever really wean away from the illegal
services (which they know they'll never completely vanquish).

Before I started downloading anything, I would see stats saying that people
who dl their music actually have been shown to buy more then people who
don't. Now of course I read that and thought the fools have their heads in
their collective arses. Ever since grabbing soulseek for myself (to dl mix
sets) I've started to realize that the tracks and records I've ended up
dl'ing I've also bought. I've 'discovered' several new ARTISTS and LABELS
because of file sharing. I've picked up on many older Bands and Artists that
I probably would not ever have heard before. I now use file sharing to find
records that I then try to hunt down (and buy).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the record companies giving up on my
generation because they don't think we'll ever generate any profit for
themis a mistake. Does anyone know if these record companies have done
any independant studies on the subject and if so are the findings online
somewhere? I can see them 'ditching' a generation like that if they were
only listening to what the RIAA tells them but I think they would be
surpirsed if they checked up on it themselves (assuming they haven't
already!?).

can someone plesaase claify what new DBX your talking about (since some of
us don't go to the record shop 3 times a week)

If you're talking about Squirrelbait- which to my knowledge is the most
recent DBX release- than it needs to be heard on a big system to be
understood. I didn';t like it on the villallobos mix cd, but was rocked
when john tejada played it live.

and if there's another newer DBx- it'd be nice to know the name of it.

Off the list for a bit, nice to be back.

Thought I'd share something I picked up last week. I was shopping at PDQ
in
Tuscon, Arizona, (an amazing place - if you're ever in the area, check it
out.
TONS of wax - all old stuff) and among the gems I found (inc mint French
Kiss
12 on Arista(?)) was a record I picked up strictly for the cover art.
All writing was in the Plastikman font. Not a similar font, the exact
same
font, in the same red color. Even the i was dotted with the plus 8
ish
symbol. The funny thing is, the issue date was either 1988 or 89.
 Anyone ever seen this before?

 The Artist: Confession
 Title : I found my Love 12
 Label : Abfahrt (sp)

The sound is Euro/club/trance as you might expect something from the late
80s to
 sound.

If you search the label (German) you can find it on the web and check
the cover out yourself. No link, though. Sorry.

One thing to keep in mind is that knobs and sliders on electronic gear, dj
gear, stereo gear often oxidize leaving you with a scratchy sound when
faders or knobs move. There are various sprays you can purchase at high
end
audio stores that lubricate the faders and bring life back to them.
A great product a friend lent me is called Nutrol and it works wonders for
 scratchy, worn out sounding faders.

Of course there are some crappy dj mixers out there that don't work
properly
or comparatively to a more expensive mixer.

On the high production 21'st Century techno tip the new Cari Lekebusch
Temple Jam on H Production, the new Alter Ego Transformer on Klang
Elektronik (#1 on Sven Vaths November charts), the new
Hiroki Esashika on Iform, I don't buy a lot of electro these days Carl
Finlow's Electrilogy series is an exception.

The new Los Hermanos Quetzal was a little disapointing, it sounds a little
cheesy like trance, I don't see what all the hype is about.

My theory is these people tend to have conventional taste in music, they

embrace
more traditional sounding music.

Nope, it is black writing on the sleeve but it IS printed on mine. and it
says it's called Wandering Aimlessly which is the B-side. As far as the
vinyl goes it's a fairly plain and white but not the same as the original
mplant label which I have as well.

Actually... (and i'm not sure if it's the same as yours) i have a
 similar record.

On the outside it is a Black Flag sleeve, however the writing on the
sleeve seems to be written in black marker, and when you finally get to
the record itself it is indeed stamped with M-Plant. Even the catalog
 number is M-P 306.

Guess someone ran out of sleeves. ;)

So, is this release in typical Sines style? From what i have heard from

and
some track present a more elektro-ish groove.

Is the Static ep a one-off (stylistically speaking) or is it fair to

Yeh, I've tried it out and, despite being sceptical beforehand, I have to
say I was extremely impressed. There is no obvious latency (and I was
mixing
quite agressively) and the UI is very straightforward. Plus, you can
assign
the same track to both records for instant doubles :-)
Having said that, I'm not going to buy it as I rarely play outside my home
town (in fact, these days I rarely play in my home town!), but for a
travelling DJ its gold dust. No crates to lug around and a massively
 extended selection!

there were luke slater and soul center videos on mtv2 (usa) a month or
 two ago (late friday night).

I've seen the Luke Slater video - and yeah there are some on mtv2 but they
tend to e the more pop oriented singles (let me know if there are more
underground tunes playing there - I have seen the Herbert video which was
 cool)

i remember aux 88's electro/techno on the detroit special mtv uk did
 about 4-5 years ago.

that would be cool - if they played it here in the US!

i think a lot of people are doing videos, we just never see them

there are more being done now, I'll agree but I know there has to be more
out there that just aren't popular enough to get on-air time @ mtv in the
US - the L.Garnier videos I saw on Rolling Stone's website for example -
old Kraftwerk videos, Jaguar, 808 State, hell even most of Bjork's videos
have never made it on US television. So I'm looking for either DVDs or VHS
 sources for these.

Re: [313] techno/house divide (was Peacefrog Records special on BBC)

2002-08-03 Thread Trevor Wilkes
I agree wiith senslo here. Up here(Toronto area) when you say techno people
(in the know or not) assume looped hard banging stuff and they're like
oh my god, not techno

I call everything I play Techno though, from early electronic to acid house
to
detroit, electro, IDM, spoken word, vocal house... whatever if I like it
I'll play/listen
to it and I'll call it Techno, I think for me it boils to down to the
context the
record is heard in.

People (Bjork for one) have often said to them Techno isn't a genre as much
as it is a frame
of mind, I happen to agree with that quite a bit.

 Hi

Good point. I tend to think of the music I'm into as
techno (Detroit stuff, Trapez, Perlon, etc) but
techno's kind of a dirty word around these parts
(because it's been subsumed by the hard monotonous
European variety of techno), so when I'm asked what I
play I say deep electronic house (or sometimes minimal
house, but then minimal's kind of a dirty word too).
At the end of the day techno and house are two ends of
a spectrum, and the distinction is sometimes difficult
to make. Do you think techno as originally defined and
produced by Juan Atkins would be considered techno if
released today? I think it'd probably be called deep
house. But I guess most of Rob Hood's stuff is very
clearly techno, the Nighttime World albums excepted.
And I haven't actually heard the Peacefrog album yet.

 Cheers

 Chris

 The 12 is really great!
The A-side Who taught you maths is more in the style like his brilliant
Internal empire album on Tresor years ago. Highly recommended.
The B-side True enemies, false friends is okay but not as outstanding
IMO.
The typical style that he made on his last M-Plant records that I don't
like
 too much honestly.. :-)

the one with the chord stab on 2 4 is 100% sure phylyps track II, so
either you have the wrong idea about which track fades where ;) or
box
   section samples... i wouldn't know

After tracking down the Real Audio of Phylyps Track II, it would seem
Mr.
Clayton is guilty of some thievery, or at least a pretty faithful
reproduction (intentional or otherwise). From the segment played in the
mix,
it could be either track - prolly phylyps... Sorry to confuse. I thought
I'd
been hearing a remix of Box Section when I heard people playing
Phylyps.
Clearly I had the cart in front of the horse.

Box Section is interesting if nothing else, b/c it opens up quite a bit
in
the latter 1/2 of it. Maybe John should track both down. :)

Tight and metallic. Nice sense of restrained intensity.

I'm looking for some recommendations for a good electro CD. I'm told
there's a good one called 'Futurism' on City Rockers and I've also been
recommended Detroit Grand Pubahs 'Funk Ya'll. I've already got Japanese
Telecom which is good so something similar would be cool.

futurism might be ok, depending on what flavour of electro you prefer.
personally, i thought that there was quite a bit of filler and that the
best tracks (kittin, hacker, golden boy) were probably best available
elsewhere. then again, there is a lot of stuff there for an ok price. its
a
 mix CD too.

yesterday i got my copy of the ghostly international 'disco nouveau'
compilation which is supposedly more italo than electro inspired, though
it's a pretty blurry distinction sometimes. anyway, i've only had one
listen but i reckon its very cool, a really nice selection of quality
varied tracks, beautiful packaging too! can't wait to get to know it
better
 - the ectomorph track especially.

also don't miss the i-f mix CD 'mixed up in the hague' natch (yeah i know
again, strictly italo but its so cool) and if you want to check the
original sounds, the 'classic electro mastercuts' on beechwood are great
 comps. do the smurf!

Maybe everyones question shouldn't have been when the line-up will be
released but when when the final confirmed line-up will be released which as
of yet is still anyones guess.

 great though.

I've never heard of a DJ getting an encore in the US, except for the Jeff
Mills Liquid Room CD which I also thought was bizarre. The closest I've
ever come was Doc Martin at Twilo sometime in 95 (right after it turned
from the Sound Factory). They kept trying to turn on the lights and turn
off the system and every time they did it he would throw on an even better
record and everyone would start dancing and they'd turn the lights off for
 another 10 minutes or so.

But I've never heard of a DJ getting an encore in this country at least.
As
I said in a previous email it seems very bizarre to me since it takes a
good DJ hours to do anything worth listening to and I don't see how that
can be replicated in a few minutes in an encore.

I don't find the idea of a crowd wanting a DJ to continue strange - that
was happened lots of times - but I find that people generally get annoyed
if the music stops playing so that the DJ can bask in the glow of the
crowd
or the MC is announcing the DJs or anything like that.

So here I think people would get more annoyed if a DJ stopped playing to
wait for the crowd to ask them for an encore than if a local DJ kept the
 music going.

Just something I found a bit strange.

 Eric

I don't know about elsewhere but encores are traditional in Australia. It

have done them. And lo behold local DJs coming on after who don't give
the
DJ a chance to do them. Then it's ice grill time. People leave.

To me the point of having a DJ is having someone create something over
a
matter of hours. So playing one record over the monitors seems a
particularly bizarre way of doing an encore...

He'd been playing overtime from what I remember. The security in the
place
turned off the sound system. The monitor was all that was running.
Nobody
   wanted to go home.

That was a seriously AWESOME night. Probably one of the best nights of
my
life. I doubt I'll ever experience anyting like that ever again.
