LIke I said, I have no idea what happened with Terrence, and people who
are professionals should show up when they're expected and do what they do.
Missing gigs as a DJ is really hard to live down. As an example, Paul
Johnson got a reputation as a no show, and I think that it still effects
the number and quality of bookings he gets to this day.

I just want people to know that whatever happened, TP is a human being
too. There's a tendency -- and I'm not accusing anyone on this list per se
-- to pile on when someone's down, and I couldn't see it happen to someone
I know and respect and hold my tongue.

canceling shows to promoters and give them time to find a replacement dj
and working on solutions with them then a good way can be found in
resolving issues . i work with mainly american dj's . 1 of those dj's had
to cancel a whole tour of 10 dates last december as his mom was out of the

understandably so . i immediately reached out to promoters and asked the
said dj to also publish a formal statement apologizing to fans who had
already purchased tickets for some of those shows . 100 % of the promoters
were very supportive . we managed to reschedule all of the shows .

i heard that 1 of the promoters involved in the TP situation went as far
as the airport and he was nowhere to be seen . they got an email that
evening saying he could not make it and they feel that they were not even

my biggest worry with this situation is that , this fallout will impact
other dj's - just because they happen to be american . when i started
working with dj's beginning of 2008 . i approached several known clubs in
europe and as soon as they realized that i was working with mainly american
dj's some went as far as to say that they simply are not comfortable with
working with american dj's because they come with problems . i.e. , not
showing up for gigs and general attitude problems .

i feel in the last few yrs we turned a corner in changing that perception
. it would be a big shame if we go back to the same situation that clubs do
not want to book dj's based on a few not fulfilling their obligations .

Starting in about 1998, the promotion crew I was involved in, Rotation
(Iowa City) brought Terrence Parker to play shows in Iowa City. We brought
him in at least 5 times. Since then, other Iowa City promoters brought him
4 or 5 more times. The last time he played here was IIRC 2012.

Throughout that period, TP was the gold standard of 'name' DJs coming
through -- he always showed up, he always drew enough of a crowd to more
than pay his guarantee and expenses. Furthermore, he was a sincere,
lovable guy, who would stand around for an hour in the rain after everyone
got booted out of the club to talk to fans.

He's always been a friend to me personally. To the extent that I am a
judge of character, I've always thought he was honest, sincere, and 100% on
the level. Throughout his career, he's tried a lot of different things to
try and make a living and not all of them are successful. He moved to Las
Vegas and worked as the music director of an evangelical church; he's tried
a lot of different record labels and ways of communicating.

To some extent you could say Terrence was almost corny -- the intros to
his Mix CDs with the Warner Brothers cartoon samples; calling himself DJ
Extraordinaire. But anyone who sees him play know that he's one of the
real people, a guy with a great ear for house music, great DJ skills, and
the ability to read a crowd and make them feel fantastic.

I have no idea what the deal is with his current difficulties. I know
that a lot has happened in his personal life -- he has declared bankruptcy,
lost his home, gotten divorced. That last has to have wounded him the
worst -- he was NOT a player, and loved and respected his wife deeply, and
 I'm sure still does.

I have not contributed to his DJ fund, primarily because after putting
two kids through college and one through graduate school, I'm broke as a
joke. I also do not think that he will raise the kind of money he's
looking for. But I have no doubt he is trying to dig himself out of a deep
 hole and restore his reputation.

Whatever the reasons for his difficulties I believe in Terrence's
 talent, character, and good

speaking of dodgy remixes, Carl Craig was speaking with Joe Muggs in a

 he mentioned a remix/re-edit or maybe even a re-recording of Toto's Africa

2013/2/7 Philip McGarva philipmcga...@gmail.com

Yeah I got a copy this week. It's a nice package with classic Japanese
styling. It looks like it might contain upmarket cosmetics. My copy doesn't
seem to say anything about 'War of the Worlds' being mastered from vinyl,
thought it's a slightly different version to the one that appears on
'Detroit 313' et al. Anyhoo the tracks are mostly familiar. Many seem to be
inspired by 'Groove La Chord' which was fine once or twice but not
indefinitely. There are a few nice, if a little generic, tracks toward the
end of the second CD. I guess Derrick can now let Djinxx go back to his
happy monastic life in the Malaysian jungle.

(313) Spaced Out

2012-03-09 Thread Wibo Lammerts
Goodmorning,

This got probably covered many years ago on this list, but I could not
find it, so here goes.

The other day I was playing this:
http://www.discogs.com/Rhythim-Is-Rhythim-Derrick-May-Mayday-Innovator-Soundtrack-For-The-Tenth-Planet/release/12416,
and it occured to me that I have never seen a Transmat-release with
Spaced Out on it, except for the numerous Innovator compilations and
box-sets.

So, on which record did it first appear? I always thought it came from
this: http://www.discogs.com/Mayday-Wiggin/master/13915 but as it
turns out, Spaced Out is not on this record.

Any info is appreciated,

intriguing

Op 9 maart 2012 07:26 heeft Mike Taylor disconihil...@gmail.com het
volgende geschreven:
 Hello,

Can anybody confirm/verify the identity of Jason Grove?

 http://www.discogs.com/artist/Jason+Grove

Born in Detroit, he started his career in the late 80’s,
dj-ing in underground parties when the techno house
movement was just at the beginning. He was invited few
times on detroit local stations such as WDRQ WJLB to
play. Some said he was at that time very close to the
“Wizard”, helping producing their first tracks with anthony
srock as Final Cut. He had many opportunities during the
90’s to release some of his work on various prestigious
labels, however, as the guy is really hardcore straight
edge, he prefered to continue producing only with analog
gears (don’t ever speak to him about a computer or he’ll
get mad !) record his work on cassette only, selling it
to indie stores giving it to friends for some special
events (birthday, graduation etc ... !). We heard this
story long times ago it was only when we were in L.A.
last year at pooh-bah record shop that we finally managed
to get our hands on one of those tapes (one from june 1991
the other one done in october 1992) with some of the best
incredible music we’ve heard in years, it sounded like
Kerri Chandler before Kerri Chandler did even start to
release any tracks. Those first tapes are finally available
after a hiatus of more than 15 years on vinyl only.

So does this guy actually exist, or was he just made up to sell records on
hype? I've never seen his name come up anywhere over the years, and he
doesn't have any interviews, or photos on the web.  Does anybody know this
 guy?

 Thanks,
 Mike

WHAT CAN WE SAY ABOUT MOBY THAT HASN’T BEEN SAID?

Hmmm, I can think of a few things actually now you mention it.

Having said that, he did do a pretty fine remix of LFO on WARP many
years ago so he's not all bad.  Skrillex on the other hand..

Actually I thought there was some good stuff and some that was so
bad it was basically also good.

I joined the 4AD list, not really rave oriented but one of the first
standalone music oriented mailing lists, in 1989.  At one point around
 mid-1992 I was on sfraves, socal-raves, ne-raves and uk-dance
(nwraves a little later and 313 in early 1995), and a regular on vrave
so I know the actual history quite well.

In retrospect I think the lists reflected rather than drove the state of
the scene, but they were important to reaching out and seeing
that there was more to all this than a few scattered oddball breakouts
 of electronic music.

And there were some priceless moments.  I don't indulge in nostalgia
much but I bring out the bit below once in a while for grins...  The
 contributors
to this (on  ne-raves) were from every part of the US, coast to coast, north
 to south.

the whole story -- real people live in Detroit, and despite the

How could these two stories of Detroit be synthesized?

This makes me wonder... Axis has had quite a few in the past: the

2009/4/10 Andrew Duke and...@andrew-duke.com:
Many listeners have requested timings to make it easier to ID songs I play
 in the mix.
Good news:  I've listed timings for the first 30 songs in this week's mix.
 Bad news:
It turns out my stopwatch can only recall 30 laps, but I'll buy a better
 stopwatch before
the next show. Sweet guest DJ mix from Reade Truth soon come.

Re: (313) When posting a mix...

2009-04-07 Thread Wibo Lammerts
I really do not care much about quality or metadata... but I do like
tracklists... it can be quite annoying, when you play a mix, and you
want to find out about a certain record in this mix... Like the
Patrice Scott one, not too long ago.

My 2 cents,

Wibo

Please enter the metadata into the mp3--preferably all of it but at
least put your name in the Artist field. Finding DJ 313kiddo's
HotCheeseJamz mix is a little difficult in even a modestly sized
library of 3,500 mp3's since the filename was called
 uberl33tmix2009.mp3.

Please do not encode at anything lower than 256k.

I'm more tolerant of this with 313'ers but still, I'm losing my
tolerance for this type of stuff overall.

Plus it's just my opinion. Nothing to get worked up about.

And now back to my regularly scheduled lurking.

 Subject: (313) official 313 list do's and don'ts of DEMF line-ups

 DO:
Include Detroit DJs and Artists.  Genre not important as long as
contemporary with some electronic elements. e.g. Slum Village, but not
 a Detroit Polka band.
Include International artists and DJs whose music is either Detroit
influenced, or is interesting and enjoyable in it's own right and not
too far from the core focus on electronic music.  E.g. Tortoise and
 Autechre were good DEMF bookings.
Include the best proponents of new dance music genres. E.g. Burial
would be a good booking. Give him a Luchador mask to wear if he's
 still feeling bashful.

 DON'T:
Book Trance DJs. Trance music -- regardless of nation or city of
origin -- is the opposite of Techno, and the opposite of good music,
 for that matter.
Book a DJ/Producer who don't actually make the music they release
 under their names.
 Book any Big-room, Ibiza-DJing, Coked-out, Primadonna Bullsh1t DJs.

Now it's tough to balance financial prudence with artistic integrity,
and arguably Paxahau has mostly done OK.  But the only rightful place
for Benny Benassi at DEMF would be in a dunk tank.

2009-03-04 Thread Wibo Lammerts
This hadn't popped up on the 313-board yet, so here goes.

===

Hello Everyone!

Once again, Detroit is at it.  Another segment of important history
has been destroyed without a hint of consideration.  (Yes our city
does love us - but its tough love).  2030 Grand River has been cleared
for the newcoming Red Wings Hockey Stadium.  We wanted to send out a
request to you all -  because we need you to help us memorialize the
history.    If any of you came to 2030 Grand River between 1992 and
2000, we would greatly appreciate digital images (JPEG files are
preferred) of the visit.  PLEASE include your name ( who came with
you), date of visit, where you hailed from and any memory you wish to
share.  If you did not know, 2030 Grand River is no more.  It has been
demolished.  We would like to post some of YOUR memories, along with
ours,  on the site.    This will allow people who did NOT know, to
know.  Again, we sincerely appreciate the visits and the memories.
Please send them to:  supp...@submerge.com.  Put in the subject: 2030
Memories.

We are especially interested in anyone who has pics of the ceiling
and the wall signings

Sincerely,
Bridgette
