[313] Re:[313] Theremin/Electronic Odyssey

Yeah, a housemate hired it on video last year.

the reunion between theramin, and clara rockmore was touching, if a little
strange.

his work was unbelievable, and the kgb stuff was nuts too.

But Wilson's little monologue took the cake. The man is insane, he rambled,
he made no sense whatsoever. if fact i was surprised they kept it in the
doco, but it was funny.

Its a profile of Leon Theremin, the inventor of the electronic musical
synthesizer that bears his name, follows his early days spent developing
and perfecting the instrument and explains what happened in subsequent
years after he was abducted by the KGB in the Mid-1930's.

Features comments by musicians Todd Rundgren, Brian Wilson, and Clara
Rockmore, plus inventor Robert Moog, and Theremin himself.

i must say i'm surprised to see this discussion as when DC played adelaide
earlier this for
our Big Day Out festival, he not only came back for an encore and danced
around by
himself behind the decks, he also jumped down and shook hands, signed
autographs and
chatted with people for a little while after his set...

maybe he just likes the festival vibe...

but what about someone like surgeon - when i saw him he djed with zero
visual emotion, in
fact i'd say barely acknowledged the tiny crowd, but was i complaining... i
don't think so...

i live in adelaide so i might get a chance in another year or two... the
promoter lost out big
last time... typical of my city...

but enuff whinging... who do people think are the good guys??? I'd found
the space dj'z
ben sims to be pretty friendly... i generally find internationals disappear
as soon as they
finish playing, but these guys have hung about and chatted... thoughts???

eerie, a friend and i were discussing this last night... she claimed that
this kind of marketing ploy/rumour is called a mime(not sure of spelling -
pronounced meem)... haven't been able to find true definition of this but
it supposed to be a crazy phenomenon... i mean i heard of it from quite a
few people, and now it's on the list so as a marketing ploy it works
incredibly well can any one else add to this idea/defintion??? prolly
best to reply off list...

It's a little known fact, but supergreg is actually a

the graphic designers did in their spare time and
eventually there was even a commercial spot where
Buddy Lee is fighting Super Greg.

the promoters can't work together and it gets a little too personal at

i know getting promotors of different styles to work together ain't prolly
gonna happen... but RMR's enchanted forest party in december has a lineup
as follows:

DJ's Bryan G (UK), Chris C (UK), MC/DJ Ribbs (UK), Space Dj'z (UK), Ellis
Dee (UK), Trooper (Melb), Paul Holden (syd), NXN (perth)..

and the promotors for that are NRG djs... but with space dj'z ribbz and
added to that locals/acts dj bold, mr s. cycloid and most adelaidean tech
hedz would be happy... plus i get to see ellis dee brian g if i can be
bothered...

the point to this is that parties with big name only work in adelaide if
promotors cover techno, nrg, dnb house... which i suppose promotes
diversity but then i would/and will pay $40 to see the tech acts at
EF3 but it means you really only get 1 big crew putting on the same
style parties, and that gets very same old after a time

sims would be a drawcard to a few in adelaide too but unfortunately the
numbers here means if the promotors put on a party it's only a few hundred
dedicated adelaideans that are there, so they just can't afford to do the
parties it's a sad truth that a party with umek, valentino, common
factor, recloose, and wet musik can't pull a big enuff crowd to break
even...

i also heard that sydney doesn't get that many tech acts - and that was
from techione aka damc a sydney-sider

i don't know about a national mag, i always cringe when i see the word
dance specially in tech related discussions our local street press
seems to only devote 1 page to tech, and maybe 2 record reviews...

ps cyclone: r u affiliated with onion in adelaide at all

From: Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There is talk of a national dance mag starting in Australia - based in
Sydney and run by UK publishers - and I fear this will
mean that our diversity will be compromised. It's very hard to convince
English industry types (esp those aligned with large clubs) that each
country has its own unique make-up and that other scenes are not merely
small, backward models of theirs. They just come here and see what they
want
to see. Very few industry types in Sydney have a clue about techno (it is
very subcultural there, I think other Sydney guys on this list would
agree,
this is why we should send Christmas cards to Southern Outpost, Fuzzy,
etc,
for keeping it real!!) so if a magazine came out of there you could bet
that
people we care about in Melbourne or Adelaide or Perth or Sydney's
underground would have to conform. Thank God also that the Sydney street
press still covers techno and at least gives people the option of finding
out about it, a Sydney glossy won't do the same. Any one see that letter
written by Sydney's Ministry of Sound boys in 7 in which they refuted
that
Ben Sims was popular in Australia with the rather embarassing who the
hell
is Ben Sims? Nice guys who just have to do their homework. Like they
didn't
have an inkling that Sims was a drawcard in cities like Melbourne. It was
really funny to us but was more Sydney-centricism/UK-centricism than
 ignorance.
