With the addition of the laptop in a live performance gig, it is very easy for a musician to really just stick with that. Software such as MAX/MSP, Ableton Live, Reaktor, Pro-Tools...there's enough to occupy one's time and energy strictly from the keyboard. My problem is when a musician hits "Play" on his pro-tools sequence and does some postmodern italo-disco dance for pretty much him/her self with absolutely no consideration for the audience. What's the point of performing live if you're not going to work it a little? And don't get me wrong, laptoppers work it hardcore. take, kid606, BMG, Bill Van Loo. These guys beat out some phat beats and crazy soundscapes right behind their laptops. The key here is live music, folks, and when a musician is smiling and getting into it and obviously tweaking enough virtual knobs to get a crowd moving-either physically or mentally-they are doing a fine job. The last few shows at the Detroit Art Space have both impressed and disappointed me in this sense. I'm not going to mention Telefon Tel Aviv because they use guitars and their live presence is already memorable without ever hearing a sound. I'm focusing more on Perspects, LegoWeldt (not sure if spelling is correct) and Pole. Perspects: resorted to snooty dancing and hitting play on his machine. he used a controller but that was only slightly cool. There was no improvisation. every track was already queued up perfectly, no mixing between tracks, no eq-ing...i was basically listening to him play cd's. LegoWeldt: Awesome show. Played familiar electro tracks like you've never heard before. The music was so good i didn't even notice if he was using a laptop or tables. What I mean by this is that complex mixing was apparent and the crowd was really into it. It's so easy to fall into that routine of repetitive analog synth patches and traditional 808 drum loops. i was glad i could hear something new. Pole: I felt like I was waiting in line for something to happen. i had to chain smoke to keep things interesting. slow and dubby tracks with no feeling. Pole even shook his head at given intervals. I didn't see that Vladislav Delay show that people have been talking about but I imagine I felt very similar to the fellow who made that first critical post. IDM both intrigues and repulses me almost simultaneously. I really think that innovative mixing is the key to any good electronic music piece-even the experimental type. ::carlos
[313] i missed the drexciya thread
I was in new york this weekend and not really keeping up with list. Thanks to everyone who helped me find a good event. I chose a PS1 Moma reception with Morgan Geist and it was incredible. I wanted to comment on Drexciya. Drexciya is an underwater environment. They brilliantly convey images and feelings of mystery, illusion, race for survival, warrior sea creatures, and oceanic hierarchy. Drexciya is about escaping from your routinized life by growing gills and voyaging to the bottom of the ocean. You run from the things that suffocate you in hopes of complete isolation and uninterrupted contemplation. Drexciya doesn't listen to any other music but their own. They resist their unhealthy environment. But what is healthy about journeying to the bottom of the ocean? Maybe the music sounds "the samey" because it really hasn't progressed. It's hard to progress when you aren't taking in new ideas from outside sources. I don't think Drexciya is about progression. I think they are dedicated to supporting this oceanic theme and often enough the ocean can be a long and endless stretch of the same compound. Drexciya is a different kind of underground. That is why it is so intriguing. carlos - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Tad on Friday
Did anyone see Tad Mullinix at the hamtramck blowout this Friday? If so, what exactly was the problem with his equipment? The set was faulty in so many ways. it just kind of started. People were mingling and sampling the massedonian beer and then all of a sudden he brings us into the middle of one of his loops. no intro. no build up. nothing. For a short while it appeared as if he was trying to mix two digital audio loops but then when he brought them both in and realised they couldn't beat match he quickly killed the recent loop and tried to fool us with a delay effect. Soon he gave up mixing tracks and focused primarily on efx and queuing samples. And for awhile that was cool. but he used all his tricks in the beginning so that there was nothing to anticipate. I remember grooving along to a really hard industrial techno beat but after a few minutes nothing was added or modified to keep it interesting. so he killed it. in the middle of a techno loop and then a quick fade out. and silence. more silence. and soon we are in the middle of another loop entirely different from the last. I'm just not covinced this is all due to technical difficulties. I really dig Tad's Cd's but lately when I see him live I am dissapointed. A Live PA set can be very cool and when I saw him at DEMF I was excited. So maybe this list can queue me in on what's happening. I appreciate, carlos - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Biofeedback replacing DJs / Neil Stephenson's Ideas
my favorite stelarc works are from his suspension period. He used to hang himself from tall structures by plunging hooks attached to bungee like cables through specific points along his body: shoulders, legs, just around the spinal chord, etc. and affixing the other end of the cable to the tops of the buildings. the hooks were attached in such a way that his body could not slip off them. To sustain the pain(here's my favorite part) he previously recorded sounds of his internal organs in the non-penetrated state by placing a mic inside of himself, and then, during performance(suspension), played these sounds back at an extremely high intensity as to manipulate his nerves into thinking everything was ok. He would hang from the eiffel tower and famous elevated European railways for several hours. That's just so satisfying on so many levels. carlos On Thu, 15 Nov 2001, Joshua Stephen Landau wrote: > > >stellac (sp?) an australian based performance artist in the 80s used > > >biofeedback. he would place electrodes on himself that would generate > > Stelarc.
