Am I the only person that finds the concept of this Hawtin album a bit up
 its own arse?
Good DJing? - no it's all done on computer
Good tracks? - no he is 'improving' upon other people's tracks by
deconstructing them and putting them back together.
The result is one 90 min cut n paste track which nobody else can play, nor
 would anyone want to.
 What's the point?

There's nothing next level about DE9 'Closer to the Edit', only the fact
that all the people who have done it before him
have either 1. Never been noticed in the first place. or 2. Got noticed
 but
 have long since been forgotten.

A great many producers (hip-hop, trip-hop, breaks etc.) consistently use
this process to create tracks, Richie has simply made 31 tracks
in the same vein, segued them together and called it 'innovation' (His
 publicist spin I'm sure..).

I've listened to the recording alot lately, it sounds like an experiment,
 no
flow, just tracks, intended for the mind to bounce along too. The Gescom
 MD
was certainly much more interesting, this still posseses linearity.

Rich uses what seems like a lot of Perlon (I know two or three for sure),
but in the most linear fashion possible. He could have made some awesome
breakdown edits (to let the music breathe), or to give it an added
'wanna-bust-a-move' attitude, but instead he kept it pretty thumping
 (making
 it seem tracky,
 and boring).

Like the last DE9 this one won't be in my collection, though I'm sure I'll
hear enough of it everywhere I go.

I thought that was the point of this release, to inspire volumes of
 mailing
list discussion attempting to catalogue all of the samples and loops
that
 he
uses, and what track they came from. Gotta catch 'em all or somesuch
 thing.

The DE9 record reminds me a bit of the Minidisc project that Autechre
did
under their Gescom alias. It was a collection of 88 small snippets of
 tracks
and samples that was intended to be played with the shuffle feature of
 your
Minidisc player. So each time you played the disc it would result in a
 new
  listening experience.

I found the new DE9 to be very interesting. I can't say that it's my
favorite Hawtin record, but I definitely respect him for trying to take
  Techno to that next level.

   Hello.

To my knowledge there is no 'track listing' per se, because of the
 nature
  of
the mix. Lots of track titles are included as points of reference,
but
  the
order in which they are listed is not the order in which they are
 played.
There is also nothing that subscribes to the traditional
 track-after-track
approach. Bits of track recur at random times throughout the mix.

   Makes sense, right?

[313] +8 memory robbery

2001-05-30 Thread darw_n
I had a wonderful weekend, but one thing ruined it...

I was walking down vendor isle with my fiancé, and there was richie being
nice and signing stuff. So, I went up to him, and got my girlfriend a copy
of Theorem's 'Cinder' signed to her along with a +8 mouse pad. She was
enthralled, and this made her weekend since she had an eye infection and
missed much of the fest including the Jak show. After the hail storm, we
were walking back to the car, and this thuggish raver kid straight up ran
up, and yanked the record and mouse pad away. I caught the guy and he
chucked the mouse pad over the windsor tunnel bridge, never to be seen
again, and broke the record in several pieces as I tackled him. He got up
and ran, and I just let him go, leaving me with a crushed theorem record,
smeared autograph, and a girlfriend crying for an hour or so...

This completely upsets me, because when is the next time that I can get that
record and that mouse pad both with richie signing it to my girlfriend
again?!?!?

man, if you rob me, take my money or something, not something that is
irreplaceable and a gift to the one I love!!

And I'm speaking as someone who's been in the strategic marketing
business for almost 7 years, why create such a negative stir about an
event that makes its profit from people's enjoyment? If they are a
promotion or event management firm, how could they be so ( delete
expletive here ) naive as to send out these kind of negative concepts
into the minds of the public a week before their precious show? Which,
incidentally is so valuable to them that they are announcing the
dismissal of their creative director a week before the show?

I have one answer and I've seen it before :

   Big ego's and short sightedness.

there another answer, and it's probably an even more siniter one: they're
 going
after a target audience that they know will not only not care about the
 carl
situation, but will never even hear about it. given the number and
 placement of
advertisements for this year's festival, i think it's safe to say that
they
have their sights set on a much bigger fish than the techno scene, or
even
 the
serious dance music/electronic music community as a whole.

i can pretty much guarantee that the vast majority of people who hear
about
this on mtv, fox or (for chicago people) q101, b96 and gci, have never
 heard of
carl craig and will never know how things went down between the
organizers.

how much do you know about the beginnings of and the relationships
between
the people who organized lollapalooza, for example?

i'm not blaming any individuals for this, and i don't know much about the
 way
the festival was/is/will be run... but i can pretty much guarantee that
to
whatever extent large corporate interests (read: ford and others) have an
interest this, that is the degree to which they will seek to appeal to
the
largest and richest possible audience, even to the direct
 disenfranchisement of
 the actual music community.

[313] this little fdemf C2 thingy...

2001-05-16 Thread darw_n
I have to admit, I am truly baffled by something, and I am thinking and
speaking in the mind of an entertainment business owner...

Why, on earth, would a major company, fire the head guy, a notorious artist
no less, 2 weeks prior to the event? That makes no sense at all. If I were
planning an aggressive take-over and re-shaping of a company, the *last*
thing that would enter my head would to be to create mass controversy. If I
were that aggressive, I would simply wait till after the event. And if I
was shady, I would realize that waiting would most likely provide greater
potential to pass the blame, or to create some fault, and the level of
controversy would be at its lowest after an event

It just seems odd.

I cant complain is on hardfloors x-mix it's the first song and it was
released in '97 or '98 (if I remember right). I do not know when it was
released on vinyl but the song is older then last summer.

Thats true, I forgot about that, I never bought the vinyl pack. I found the
little 7inch last summer, and it was a fresh delivery to the ol' record
store, so thats where I assumed the release date.

it's a good tune. how can you complain?(lol)

It's OK for a track. I don't know, Hardfloor is cool, but I never got into
them as much as everyone else. They can rock a 303, sure. But I always
felt as if their productions were somehow hollow, like there was no body
to their tracks...

[313] neat little k hand article...

2001-05-11 Thread darw_n
I was in the library today, reading this magazine entrepreneur weekly, and
there was a little article about the booming business of DJing, featuring
quotes and words from k hand (and someone else, I forgot for the moment)
talking about how he can get 10,000 a gig...

I just find it weird that this was in that magazine, and the topic was about
the booming business of DJing, and they interviewed detroit DJ's.

k hand is not what you would call a well known commercial DJ, why did they
pick him?

Re: [313] Bush front

2001-05-05 Thread darw_n
OK, I swear I am not going to respond on anything non-313 (I hope)...

but I know something about this, so...

The article argues that generations back
they actually supported the Nazi party, as many other influencial/wealthy
people supposedly did as well. Scary stuff, I wonder how much of it is
truth and how much is speculation... who knows???

I don't know about the Bush's, but it wouldn't surprise me. Prior to the
American involvement in the war, there were many supporters of Germany.
Germany was a mess prior to the nasty H-man, and when he rose, everything
was really really improved in every way (sorry for my laymen wording, but
I'm tired and lazy right now (after all, I am an American!!;-])) MY
grandmother tells me how, prior to the war, allot of people in our area
Cleveland Ohio, USA, actually flew Nazi flags, or had pictures of big bad H
on their wall. It wasn't till the end of the war, and the trials that
people became aware of the atrocities, and even then, it was very hush
hush...

There was even a large American Nazi party...

The 30's was a very interesting era, and the social thoughts at the time are
very different than now.

Living with a talkative 76 year old lady can be very interesting indeed!!

There was no X-Mix 1 in the format we all know (video + cd + vinyl). And
indeed, all the X-Mixes (at least the early ones were released on triple
 vinyl). I know because I have X-Mix 2 by Laurent Garnier, X-Mix 3
 (Hawtin/Aquaviva), X-Mix 4 (Dave Angel) and X-Mix 5 (Hell, best in the
series for me, very rare tracks on that one). And I've seen the Ken
Ishii,
Hardfloor, Mr C, Dave Clarke X-Mix'es on vinyl as well.

I'm not sure of that statement RD. I'm sure I know of people that have
X-Mix
1 on vinyl... and I'm talking people that bought it brand new. Even tho I
have never physically seen a copy, I can't justify my statement.

But ALL the other X-mix series has 'DEFINITELY' been released.

Also FYI, the 3-Lux vids(early animation vids pre X-mix) have been
'supposeivley' re-released on DVD! This is one of the most innovative
series
(I think 3 parts were released all up), using layering of images that
triggered different images to pop up! Definitely worth to purchase on the
 full digital tip!!

 d-JCB

Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared.

2001-03-29 Thread darw_n
Well, these are certainly great suggestions, but let me chime in for a
sec...

I actually do this, tagging trance and techno, allot with my partner, Ian
Mariano. We perform as Signal. He plays trance (with some tech influence)
and I play Tech (with some house influence). The whole purpose of us
joining is that we were sick of the genre wars. Anyways, I have found that
the really rhythmic, even repetitive techno goes very very well with PVD and
crap. all the Euro guys mix very smoothly out of any Hooj Choon record, and
once you go from trance, to maybe some swedish stuff, you can easily go
detroit. Than the trance guy can easily go from detroit to trance. And
keep in mind, despite us being a group, I could tell you what records he
owns, we do that on purpose to add a more free flowing element to it all.

Anyways, my suggestion if your stuck is go either swedish (or similar,
repetitious drums is the key) or tribal. From their, do your thing. And
the trance guy shouldn't complain one bit because those records are set up
to mix fairly easily.

If your wondering how the crowd reacts to such broad sweeps, well, lets just
say its very positive...

good luck!!

Anyway I thought it was a good question. I think that with a careful
touch, you could blend our music well and maybe provide some real
emotion to offset the blandness of hands-in-the-air trance. My first
track would be the original Knights of the Jaguar. Then I would check
  out:
-Red Planet (Stardancer, Ultra Violet Images, Sex in Zero Gravity, etc
  etc etc)
  -Derrick
  -Stacey

Maybe drop 'Good Life' at the appropriate moment and watch the crowd go
  off.

Yeah, or the Ian Pooley's 'It's an Honour' remix of it, for a somewhat
more
trance-acceptable feel (and still a very nice track IMO).

Great recommendations! I suppose the majority of the message is pretty
topical, isn't it? Stardancer is definitely your best bet, although not
'last 8 months new'. Fading the Edges by Claude Young on his Deta label
would make an interesting mix, particularly the track Angels. I'm
convinced minimal techno can be mixed out of anything at the same tempo,
so
hunt down the more recent Hood. His Technatural EP is still in the crate.
The Francois K remix of Kraftwerk's Expo 2000 would probably work nicely
towards the beginning of the set too. It has a couple of nice places to
pull
 off an abrupt transition.

You may also want to try and break up the tag team into every 2nd or 3rd
record, so you only have to worry about a few tracks to mix out of the
 trance with.

It's fun, and with a MIDI, you can play a whole friggin' drum machine
symphony if you so desire!!

As far as synching the machines and tables together, there are plenty of
devices out there that takes a BPM read off your mixer and converts it to
MIDI to your machines. Its not fool proof though. The company that makes
the best (that I know of) is Redsomethingorother, the same company that

This isnt related to Techno soap operas ...But quite related to the list..

The federal government is trying to get money for e-mail...
  Please pass onto anyone interested.

  VOTE NO ON Bill 602P
  Guess the warnings were true.
  Federal Bill 602P 5-cents per E-mail sent.
It figures! No more free E-mail!
  We knew this was coming!!
Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government
to charge a 5-cent charge on every delivered
E-mail. Please read the following carefully
if you intend to stay online and continue using E-mail.

The last few months have revealed
an alarming trend in the Government of the
  United States attempting
to quietly push through legislation that will
affect our use of the Internet.
Under proposed legislation, the US Postal Service
  will be attempting to bill
E-mail users out of alternative postage fees
  Bill 602P will permit the
Federal Government to charge a 5-cent surcharge on
every E-Mail delivered, by billing Internet
Service Providers at source. The consumer
would then be billed in turn by the ISP.

  Washington DC lawyer Richard
Stepp is working without pay to prevent this
  legislation from becoming law.
The US Postal Service is claiming lost
  revenue, due to the proliferation
of E-mail, is costing nearly $230,000,000
  in revenue per year.
You may have noticed their recent ad campaign:
There is nothing like a letter.
Since the average person received about 10 pieces
of E-mail per day in 1998,
the cost of the typical individual would be an
  additional 50 cents a day
  - or over $180 per year - above and beyond their
  regular Internet costs.
Note that this would be money paid directly to the
US Postal Service for a service
  they do not even provide.

The whole point of the Internet
  is democracy and non-interference.
  You are already paying an
exorbitant price for snail mail because of
  bureaucratic efficiency.
It currently takes up to 6 days for a letter to be
  delivered from coast to coast.
If the US Postal Service is allowed to tinker
  with E-mail, it will mark
the end of the free Internet in the United
  States.

  Our congressional representative,
Tony Schnell (R) has even suggested a
  $20-$40 per month surcharge
on all Internet service above and beyond the
  governments proposed E-mail
charges. Note that most of the major newspapers
  have ignored the story the
only exception being the Washingtonian which
  called the idea of E-mail
surcharge a useful concept who's time has come
  (March 6th, 1999 Editorial).
Do not sit by and watch your freedom erode away!

  Send this E-mail to EVERYONE
on your list, and tell all your friends
  and relatives to write their
congressional representative and say NO to
Bill 602P. It will only take
a few moments of your time and could very well
  be instrumental in killing
a bill we do not want.

  PLEASE FORWARD!

inexcusable to have whole sets that are off, unless there is a technical

by far the most prolific and successful electronic producer to
emerge from cleveland, dan curtin has released over 40 singles
and 5 full length albums on labels ranging from england's
peacefrog, new york's strictly rhythm, and japan's sublime.
dan's versatility is also evident in his releases as purveyors
of fine funk (with past collaborators tatsuro hayashi and mike

metamorphic records housed early releases from titonton and
morgan geist, who were vastly influenced by dan's percussive and
eccentric, while funky and soulful sound. with forthcoming
releases on catalyst, panhandle, and nepenta, we are sure to see
yet another side of dan curtin. yet the underlying theme to all
of his releases has been to create music that touches both
intellect and emotion. since returning from his swiss hiatus
nearly two years ago, dan has performed in cleveland only a
handful of times. at S H I F T, we are proud to host a special
dj set from dan curtin that is certain to move both the mind and

douglas black's unique house vibe is unleashed on cleveland.

And while we're on the topic - you shouldn't overclock an AMD T-bird over
1
Ghz if you have a via 733 chipset, otherwise you run the risk of screwing
up
the ACPI power settings, which could cause normal operating hardware (like
CD-ROMs and Floppys and anyuthing else) to all be assigned to the same
IRQ,
 which can wreak havoc.

really?? this is somethine I did not know!! Doesn't matter, I'm an intel
kinda guy ;)

In Win9x, if you
have a screen saver enabled, you should turn it off for the duration of
the
session, as it can create skips in the recording.

This is what I was referring to, and the same goes with any other proggie.

water cooled AMD 1.5 Ghz ... What the hell?!?!?!?!

Why is everyone on the list taking this so seriously??? It was a joke,
water cooling is for OCing, and is pretty much just for hobbiests (like me)

Where are you sending your waves as they record?? You *need* to send
 them
in an no OS HD, and it *should* be 7200 rpm's. But the real key is
that
there can NOT be any programs or op system on the disk you are
recording
 to,
not even a partitioned drive. If you do, you run a huge risk of
 failure,
unless you have a P4 or over clocked water cooled AMD 1.5 GHz and a
gig
 of
ram and a 10,000 rpm drive...

 settle down, mister toneshift.

where exactly are you getting this information? I record to my c drive
all the time, with a whole bunch of other processes running.

I did so on my old p133 with 64 megs of ram and a 5400rpm hard drive too,
 and never had a problem.

as long as your drive defragmented and ample swap space before you start
 recording, you'll be fine.

you don't have to pretend to be an expert on every topic, you know.

enter this, then press the number 7 in the lower row.

Notice one thing, hit #7 many times if you have to. It is unique every
time, and unique to every viewer. The original artists main abstract (and
undefined) intention is still there, but the total picture can not be
without the viewer (or at least the computer) being involved, and it will
never be repeated again, even to the same viewer. The viewer, and indeed
*every* viewer of this piece, is equally as creative and unique in the
process. Not only does each view become a unique and never repeated
creation, but the view has the ability to *suggest* definition via direction
of the drawing crosses by moving the mouse into the area of the crosses.

Again, let me reiterate this, I find this to be very important. The main
aspect of the original artist is still within the piece, never to be
understood by the viewers, but yet, the viewer is completely equaled with
the original artist.

this is *exactly* what toneshifting is with repetition and definition art...

I'm not trying to start another heated debate, but I am kinda full of joy
right now that I have come across such a work that puts the theory of
toneshifting into a simple and accurate visual realm...

You know, I switched from Sound Forge 4.5 to Wavelab so I could use some
of
my sweet VST plugins. I never had a problem like this with SF. Then again,
I had more free space back then too (I just recently installed Unreal
Tournament (full install), Quake3, and Half Life). If I had been thinking,
I would have had Windows use my work HD for vmemory (7GB free) instead of
my main drive (1.1 GB free).

gotta work it somehow!!

;)

The shameless self promotion is a little more fun to do though. The
toneshifting stuff is a real hard passion of mine, so at times, such as when
people call it wonderous words such as drivel, it kinda sucks.

But the shameless self promotion is good old fashioned fun!!

ooh ohh, its gonna be great huh!!!

this time though, its live from cocoon AND motor via ISDN!!

The funny thing is, you guys probably would love this recording, its raw as
hell, its real techno, not at *all* like my three other recordings which
range vastly, and has real power. I'm not honking my own horn here, I
really think many who diss just because I'm the toneshifting
extraordinaire are dissing a little too soon. But I suppose this is what
you all like to do, some 313ers seems hard nosed just because it proper or
something, cool, no bother to me, just a little confusing and certainly
disenchanting at times...

On the 313, I am really impressed by Heidelberg, how's the rest of the
cities art community, is it really that active else where (aside from the
electronic music aspect of detroit)?

There are a few more hotel in Downtown that aren't
really priced too high. The Marriott (Rennaissance
Center) runs about $130 a night, and I think it has
about 1300 rooms. It is also right next to Hart Plaza
along the river. Across the street from the Marriott
is the Courtyard. I stayed there last weekend and
paid $120/night. They also upgraded my room to a
suite, and I still only paid $120. The courtyard is
right across from Hart Plaza. The Pontchartrain Hotel
is also right across from Hart Plaza, but I'm not sure
 what it costs.
Also, for any of these hotels you'll probably pay
about $20/day for parking. That is if you get the
valet parking for your hotel. If you park in a public
deck, you'll pay every time you come and go. At the
hotel parking decks you pay once per day, regardless
of how many times you come and go.
I hope to see everyone there.

 Pat

Re: [313] OT / recording streams

2001-02-18 Thread darw_n
just set soundforge to record the stream, that's how I captured the mills @
liquidroom set of Axisrecords. Get SF ready to record, and then pull up you
little windows speaker by the clock, that's the windows mixer. Select
options, then check record, and the recording mixer will show up, check
stuff till you find what channel the stream is coming through (often
line-in), if you have a sound blaster live!, they have an added option on
the windows mixer of record what you hear, and your set...

if you have a professional high-bit rate soundcard in addition to a
soundblaster live!, turn off the drivers for the higher level card, I found
SoundBlaster's really don't like to assist in record if you have another
card, especially in SF...

Now there's another way if you have a unstable soundforge (one that hates
long recording, or a slow CPU). You can get ultraplayer at ultraplayer.com.
In there is an option to record direct to MP3. so you can record the stream
straight into MP3, then use winamp to convert the MP3 to wave, and do your
thing...

Kraftwerk live and complete!

2001-02-17 Thread darw_n
If you have Napster, I now have the entire Kraftwerk live in Buenos Aires
98 in one large file the fits *exactly* onto a 80 minute CD. I all the
files through Sound Forge, using both individual channel normalizing, and
then finishing it off with Ultramaximizer, so the sound is way better than
before. I still have the original individual tracks, so you can reference
the original quality and also the track listing. The sound is still so-so
though because its someone with a mic in the audience...

Hotlist me, my user name is darw_n, and the file is Kraftwerk - live,
Buenos Aires, 98 COMPLETE, and I have some other stuff on there (including

yep - take off the plate - use a screwdriver to peel off the next layer,

What layer, where?? you can almost adjust the pitch without even taking
off
the plate (almost), but I don't know of any additional layers, is it
 different over there??

The pitch is actually quite hard to get back to the default state. If you
don't have a meter to read the pull from the diodes, you are forced to put
the platter back on and stare at the little red dots for calibration
(often
resulting in a big headache;). *Then* the almost impossible thing is
getting *all four* red dots to jive with each other and that little table
next to the on/off switch!! It's one thing to get one dot to match the
guide on the deck, but to get all four to coincide with the guide is next
to
impossible after you manually adjust it.

Of course, this really doesn't matter, if you good, you can play on
 anything... ;)

twist the little thingee that says pitch adj. (small potmeter(is it
called
  that in english?))

 That's why I always bring a screwdriver

Space Djz played cleveland with Oliver Ho a while back. Space Dj, right in
the middle of mixing two records and smoking his 58th joint, pulls out a
screw driver from his pocket (a full sized one) and tears apart the third
table (all while mixing the other two and smoking his joint) and tweaks the
pitch...

The problem is, dude lost every screw, threw the protection plate somewhere

the area around +-3 % marked area comes useless, making the dj effectively
playing everything on at least +6% (or -6), giving playable range around
+6 to +12 (yikes). annoying. kills the basslines and bassdrum tones,
as well as in house music all vocals... people usually learn after they've
played for around 4, 5 years that 8% is enough. then they have enough
records to play varied tempo stuff, without needing that 16%.

BTW - I like to keep to a certain speed, because that is my taste. Your
taste is different. Live with it. Don't become so intangled in debate
that
you have to remark in a negative tone.

well, then buy only records that are already at your favoured
tempo, so you don't need 16% pitch control. sure it's great to ride on for
example at 135 bpm for an hour, but for 6 hours? 8 hours? there's lots of
good music, which is slower, as well as faster.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]'sthatifancymyselfto]

The title is life

Notice how the friggin' name is spelled, would really want to put a dj
onto my name??

And plaese, *notice* the damned brackets...

The words in the brackets, I think, clearly show that those are simply
search indexs, notice all the new bands that put similar items next to their
names in order to be found.

I don't care what the hell you think, but I will readily admit that I let a
bad idea slip away and get outta hand, and I admitted it was my fault for
not over-seeing any new marketing plans...

I talked to him (my manager/friend) about this today, since it's becoming
really embarrassing to me, and he reminded me that neither one of us really
knew how napster worked, let alone how fast it spread, it took only a few
days for those three sets to spread (for some reason, only one is dominant,
can't figure this out).

nonetheless, now all you guys who actually are reading this know, if you put
live @ fuse as a search index, two things will happen, you'll spread like
wildfire through napster, and you'll get people who can't seem to forgive,
nor understand, freaking out on you, making fun of you without knowing you,
and calling things like baboon, which in its own right is interesting...

Nonetheless, back to some music...

What's up with Cherry Bomb these days?? And what is there story? I always
dug them, but never got the full scoop on who they are...

And what do you care anyways??? Just a thought??

Anyways, It's not by my design that those are there, I downloaded half of
 my

there anyways. The ones that I put on there has simply my agents web
address on there, nothing more. Plus its written in the way I normally
write my name, with the underscore...

The sets with all the name is my manager, who is a good friend of mine,
trying out his new idea for marketing. Well, you see how outta hand it
got. Also, the names are what he thought was the artists I used on that,
and other recordings (there are three sets released by him from the
Sphere
 Offices)...

I personally don't own a single Richie Hawtin record. But he had it
pretty
close, especially the Isolee, I was surprised by that because no one in
 this
 area knows that!!!

Anyways, I have been trying to figure out how to fix that issue, but its
 too
late, so I just chalk it up as a mistake...

BTW, That recording is called life... and it was made right here, in
the
 basement...

And none of those recordings are in anyway toneshift recordings, just
in
case you used those to try to understand the shift...

2001-01-31 Thread darw_n
I fully agree with you here...

however, and someone brought this up...

There are DJ's, like Danny Teneglia and others, who *do* let the records
work themselves, but do it in a way that encompasses a grander picture.

But, there is a difference between these types, and the types that you and I
(and others) become critical of. They not only let the record do *all* the
work, but fail, totally, to link the records or put them in the proper place
for the proper mood...

I don't like 50 records an hour, or 10 records an hour, I enjoy 5 minute
mixes on three tables...

In other words, I personally enjoy it when there is perpetually two or
records in the mix...

Subject: [313] the LONG short of dj sets

After reading this thread for a while now, I would like to respond to
Lester's original post..; IMO, you see records being played out longer
than
before (i.e. the 80's) due to the fact that dj's just aren't quick mixing

with the energy like they used to; doing tricks, taking chances, etc...
the
records being made today do all the work for you (95% of which, IMO, are
 quite 2-dimensional /or gimmicky..).
In addition, this is still TOO much work for some people who don't want to
get off their ass- the same people who are creating ways to mix on their
computer; now they don't EVER have to leave their desk to be a dj!!
(Sorry,
this is an entirely different thread...)
Newcomers let the quality of the set fall ENTIRELY on their records,
instead of using their SKILLS to pump up the crowd. Give some people
nowadays a crate of records from just 8 years ago they wouldn't know
what
to do with themselves. To me, I would rather hear someone using THEIR
creativity with a bunch of deep, sick tracks (see Traxx, Dj Hell, Theo,
Carlos Souffront, etc.) to make a special moment on the dancefloor rather
than the latest remix of (insert your fave cheesy childhood pop song here)
played next to the flavor of the moment ravehouse/salsa/buildup/trance
amalgam again again. Going to Motor is quite the museum for this
nowadays, djs who used to beat it for 13 years now play the latest
greatest
hands-in-the-air cut that the guy last week played (or the guy who
opened).
So long as you can beat match nowadays you got those 20 current tunes
that'll make the glow sticks move faster, make a tape send it to (insert
your fave club from the D here..)!! It doesn't matter if you have style
all
your own, you will only get paid 1/3 of what the big names get (even
though
they just started playing this cheesy recently too (shhh.. don't tell!!)).
 But I digress.
 In response to...

I too hate the 'look mama how many records I can squeeze into an
 hour'-style.

Well, true. Anyone who is playing that many *just* for the sake of doing
so... is a moron. I do however think that some up comers need to be
trained as to when enough is enough-- 8 minutes of Jaguar and counting...

the more i read this, the more i ask myself if you guys have ever
heard
 a really
superb dj (which e.g. jeff mills is a solarsystem away from).

And finally someone who dares to say that Jeff Mills is not God behind
the
 decks.

Mills never claims to be God, why would you listen to anyone quoting such
tripe? However if you're denying Mills' ability as an exquisite dj and
artist, I would be curious to see who is 'superb' in your book.
You know I heard Oakenfold is pretty smooth. Same for Guiness Stout and
 babies' bottoms...

 Smoothness all the way baby!
 yeah.

  confused
when i heard a good track and another one is rolling in like a train in
 my
  face, 5 beats
faster than the one which is just playing (umfgadumppengbaengbumm).
even
 if i seem
to be alone on this point of view, but i can't dance to that.
OBVIOUSLY...! Who wants to hear someone who can't even match beats???
Thought that was a given. Besides, why are giving your cash to these
fools
anyway?? Don't support the thieves, crackheads the hard-of-hearing (no
offense to the deaf) in the scene. If everyone supported the true jacks
we
ALL would be much better off...

i love to spin two tracks for 10 minutes (if possible) together and
play
 around with them.
 *yawn*...

 j|m

(not going to see Mills @ the State cuz dj shortround's not opening
up)
   =)

What's up with Cherry Bomb these days?? And what is there story? I
always
dug them, but never got the full scoop on who they are...

 darw_n

Cherry Bomb was Richard Brown. I don't think he's released much as Cherry
Bomb in a while. His material as Swag (with one other person, I'm sure
someone else can name him) is top notch and diverse. From downtempo to
house
to breaks, all very lush and funky. Not much like Cherry Bomb really. Is
this Richard Brown the same Richard Brown that used to engineer Autechre?

No, when did I say that?? I said that lately, the notion of the mix has

And another thing, and someone brought this up. Play the whole record does

Im kinda flattered that I am the point of frustration in your life!!!

The reason why it says [LIVE @ FUSE] is so people find it easier, same with
the artist names...

And I *did* explain why I have it on my files, its because I had to download
the two other ones (both of which are live and bootlegged). Life... is
the only one I made for release, which never did do to license problems...

Look, I felt stupid too when I did a vanity search on napster and WHAM, all
that came up. I respect and understand your criticisms, do you really think
I, or any other artist for that matter, would want to appear to come off
like that? As a fake?? I would hope not!!

I OKed this action, and it was a mistake, and it got circulated before I
could go over his house and check it (Hell, I didn't even thinking of
checking it till a week later, I never thought it would be an issue till
later in the game!!;). The main reason behind Sphere putting it there is so
people who might be interested in one artist, or one genre (live @ fuse is
in itself a Napster genre;) would find my recordings, three in all. That's
all there is to look into that; it wasn't some devious slanting move, if you
were looking up Saunderson, you *may* find my CD worth a shot. That's why
there these brackets [*] around the added stuff, to separate the title and
my name from the artists and that LIVE @ FUSE garbage

We all screw up, I didn't even do this, and I'll say I screwed up. Is that
OK??

I Kinda like that Life... CD though, I think I'll listen to it right now!!

Re: [313] the longg dj set

2001-01-29 Thread darw_n
This is a great question!!!

I think its because the whole notion of the DJ being a creative artist is
lost. The newer DJ's never even thought of creating, they entertain,
rockstardom, the very thing we rebelled against to begin with...

Instead of oh, I am going to take this hook, and this break down and create
something new, it has become *exactly* what a wedding or radio DJ or a POP
band does, they play *exactly* what the crowd wants to hear...

The older DJ's, or some of the persistent ones (like myself) find the
creation to be for more interesting, and far more valid. But the problem
here is that this is very hard to communicate to a new DJ. So many times,
that I actually got in arguments with normal non techno orientated people
about DJing. They could not understand that it can be more that just
playing records...

i've been listening to betaloung, and groovetechand there is a
distinctly different approach to dj sets than say ten + years ago. rather
than about a MINUTE of a song, then a segue, djs now play the whole
songor close to it, before bringing in something else.

does this occur as a result of djs having to spin 6-8 hour setsor is
 there something else going on?

The Police and the News Media raided the House on Friday. Several People

This is proof that the Police are watching and gathering information from
