Never been noticed in the first place. or 2. Got noticed but have long since been forgotten. A great many producers (hip-hop, trip-hop, breaks etc.) consistently use this process to create tracks, Richie has simply made 31 tracks in the same vein, segued them together and called it 'innovation' (His publicist spin I'm sure..). I've listened to the recording alot lately, it sounds like an experiment, no flow, just tracks, intended for the mind to bounce along too. The Gescom MD was certainly much more interesting, this still posseses linearity. Rich uses what seems like a lot of Perlon (I know two or three for sure), but in the most linear fashion possible. He could have made some awesome breakdown edits (to let the music breathe), or to give it an added 'wanna-bust-a-move' attitude, but instead he kept it pretty thumping (making it seem tracky, and boring). Like the last DE9 this one won't be in my collection, though I'm sure I'll hear enough of it everywhere I go. Gotta catch 'em all or somesuch thing. The DE9 record reminds me a bit of the Minidisc project that Autechre did under their Gescom alias. It was a collection of 88 small snippets of tracks and samples that was intended to be played with the shuffle feature of your Minidisc player. So each time you played the disc it would result in a new listening experience. I found the new DE9 to be very interesting. I can't say that it's my favorite Hawtin record, but I definitely respect him for trying to take Techno to that next level. To my knowledge there is no 'track listing' per se, because of the nature of the mix. Lots of track titles are included as points of reference, but the order in which they are listed is not the order in which they are played. There is also nothing that subscribes to the traditional track-after-track approach. Bits of track recur at random times throughout the mix. Makes sense, right? [313] +8 memory robbery
I had a wonderful weekend, but one thing ruined it... I was walking down vendor isle with my fiancé, and there was richie being nice and signing stuff. So, I went up to him, and got my girlfriend a copy of Theorem's 'Cinder' signed to her along with a +8 mouse pad. She was enthralled, and this made her weekend since she had an eye infection and missed much of the fest including the Jak show. After the hail storm, we were walking back to the car, and this thuggish raver kid straight up ran up, and yanked the record and mouse pad away. I caught the guy and he chucked the mouse pad over the windsor tunnel bridge, never to be seen again, and broke the record in several pieces as I tackled him. He got up and ran, and I just let him go, leaving me with a crushed theorem record, smeared autograph, and a girlfriend crying for an hour or so... This completely upsets me, because when is the next time that I can get that record and that mouse pad both with richie signing it to my girlfriend again?!?!? man, if you rob me, take my money or something, not something that is irreplaceable and a gift to the one I love!! darw_n... ... :i: explore. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If they are a promotion or event management firm, how could they be so ( delete expletive here ) naive as to send out these kind of negative concepts into the minds of the public a week before their precious show? Which, incidentally is so valuable to them that they are announcing the dismissal of their creative director a week before the show? I have one answer and I've seen it before : Big ego's and short sightedness. there another answer, and it's probably an even more siniter one: they're going after a target audience that they know will not only not care about the carl situation, but will never even hear about it. given the number and placement of advertisements for this year's festival, i think it's safe to say that they have their sights set on a much bigger fish than the techno scene, or even the serious dance music/electronic music community as a whole. i can pretty much guarantee that the vast majority of people who hear about this on mtv, fox or (for chicago people) q101, b96 and gci, have never heard of carl craig and will never know how things went down between the organizers. how much do you know about the beginnings of and the relationships between the people who organized lollapalooza, for example? i'm not blaming any individuals for this, and i don't know much about the way the festival was/is/will be run... but i can pretty much guarantee that to whatever extent large corporate interests (read: ford and others) have an interest this, that is the degree to which they will seek to appeal to the largest and richest possible audience, even to the direct disenfranchisement of the actual music community. m -- matt hellige [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://matt.immute.net - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[313] this little fdemf C2 thingy...
I have to admit, I am truly baffled by something, and I am thinking and speaking in the mind of an entertainment business owner... Why, on earth, would a major company, fire the head guy, a notorious artist no less, 2 weeks prior to the event? That makes no sense at all. If I were planning an aggressive take-over and re-shaping of a company, the *last* thing that would enter my head would to be to create mass controversy. If I were that aggressive, I would simply wait till after the event. And if I was shady, I would realize that waiting would most likely provide greater potential to pass the blame, or to create some fault, and the level of controversy would be at its lowest after an event It just seems odd. darw_n... ... :i: explore. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

OK, I swear I am not going to respond on anything non-313 (I hope)... but I know something about this, so... The article argues that generations back they actually supported the Nazi party, as many other influencial/wealthy people supposedly did as well. Scary stuff, I wonder how much of it is truth and how much is speculation... who knows??? I don't know about the Bush's, but it wouldn't surprise me. Prior to the American involvement in the war, there were many supporters of Germany. Germany was a mess prior to the nasty H-man, and when he rose, everything was really really improved in every way (sorry for my laymen wording, but I'm tired and lazy right now (after all, I am an American!!;-])) MY grandmother tells me how, prior to the war, allot of people in our area Cleveland Ohio, USA, actually flew Nazi flags, or had pictures of big bad H on their wall. It wasn't till the end of the war, and the trials that people became aware of the atrocities, and even then, it was very hush hush... There was even a large American Nazi party... The 30's was a very interesting era, and the social thoughts at the time are very different than now. I think this years line up really represents the global nature of underground electronic music and I personally have no gripes about it. The fact that it is held in Detroit is a fitting tribute and recognition enough. Whilst there are many names that I would have loved to have seen there, There isn't really a single moment throughout the 3 days where I can see myself being stuck for some wicked music. I think people should stop moaning about who isn't there and start getting into who is. Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared.
Well, these are certainly great suggestions, but let me chime in for a sec... I actually do this, tagging trance and techno, allot with my partner, Ian Mariano. We perform as Signal. He plays trance (with some tech influence) and I play Tech (with some house influence). The whole purpose of us joining is that we were sick of the genre wars. Anyways, I have found that the really rhythmic, even repetitive techno goes very very well with PVD and crap. all the Euro guys mix very smoothly out of any Hooj Choon record, and once you go from trance, to maybe some swedish stuff, you can easily go detroit. Than the trance guy can easily go from detroit to trance. And keep in mind, despite us being a group, I could tell you what records he owns, we do that on purpose to add a more free flowing element to it all. Anyways, my suggestion if your stuck is go either swedish (or similar, repetitious drums is the key) or tribal. From their, do your thing. And the trance guy shouldn't complain one bit because those records are set up to mix fairly easily. If your wondering how the crowd reacts to such broad sweeps, well, lets just say its very positive... good luck!! darw_n repetition : repeat : shift... http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com - Original Message - From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Dave Clark [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 11:56 PM Subject: Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared. - Original Message - From: Dave Clark [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 11:24 PM Subject: Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared. Anyway I thought it was a good question. I think that with a careful touch, you could blend our music well and maybe provide some real emotion to offset the blandness of hands-in-the-air trance. My first track would be the original Knights of the Jaguar. Then I would check out: -Red Planet (Stardancer, Ultra Violet Images, Sex in Zero Gravity, etc etc etc) -Derrick -Stacey Maybe drop 'Good Life' at the appropriate moment and watch the crowd go off. Yeah, or the Ian Pooley's 'It's an Honour' remix of it, for a somewhat more trance-acceptable feel (and still a very nice track IMO). Great recommendations! I suppose the majority of the message is pretty topical, isn't it? Stardancer is definitely your best bet, although not 'last 8 months new'. Fading the Edges by Claude Young on his Deta label would make an interesting mix, particularly the track Angels. I'm convinced minimal techno can be mixed out of anything at the same tempo, so hunt down the more recent Hood. His Technatural EP is still in the crate. The Francois K remix of Kraftwerk's Expo 2000 would probably work nicely towards the beginning of the set too. It has a couple of nice places to pull off an abrupt transition. You may also want to try and break up the tag team into every 2nd or 3rd record, so you only have to worry about a few tracks to mix out of the trance with. Re: [313] Drummachine+turntables
It's fun, and with a MIDI, you can play a whole friggin' drum machine symphony if you so desire!! As far as synching the machines and tables together, there are plenty of devices out there that takes a BPM read off your mixer and converts it to MIDI to your machines. Its not fool proof though. Email tax..Bill 602P.. This isnt related to Techno soap operas ...But quite related to the list.. The federal government is trying to get money for e-mail... Please pass onto anyone interested. VOTE NO ON Bill 602P Guess the warnings were true. Federal Bill 602P 5-cents per E-mail sent. It figures! No more free E-mail! We knew this was coming!! Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent charge on every delivered E-mail. Please read the following carefully if you intend to stay online and continue using E-mail. The last few months have revealed an alarming trend in the Government of the United States attempting to quietly push through legislation that will affect our use of the Internet. Under proposed legislation, the US Postal Service will be attempting to bill E-mail users out of alternative postage fees Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent surcharge on every E-Mail delivered, by billing Internet Service Providers at source. The consumer would then be billed in turn by the ISP. Washington DC lawyer Richard Stepp is working without pay to prevent this legislation from becoming law. The US Postal Service is claiming lost revenue, due to the proliferation of E-mail, is costing nearly $230,000,000 in revenue per year. You may have noticed their recent ad campaign: There is nothing like a letter. Since the average person received about 10 pieces of E-mail per day in 1998, the cost of the typical individual would be an additional 50 cents a day - or over $180 per year - above and beyond their regular Internet costs. Note that this would be money paid directly to the US Postal Service for a service they do not even provide. The whole point of the Internet is democracy and non-interference. You are already paying an exorbitant price for snail mail because of bureaucratic efficiency. It currently takes up to 6 days for a letter to be delivered from coast to coast. If the US Postal Service is allowed to tinker with E-mail, it will mark the end of the free Internet in the United States. Our congressional representative, Tony Schnell (R) has even suggested a $20-$40 per month surcharge on all Internet service above and beyond the governments proposed E-mail charges. Note that most of the major newspapers have ignored the story the only exception being the Washingtonian which called the idea of E-mail surcharge a useful concept who's time has come (March 6th, 1999 Editorial). Do not sit by and watch your freedom erode away! Send this E-mail to EVERYONE on your list, and tell all your friends and relatives to write their congressional representative and say NO to Bill 602P. It will only take a few moments of your time and could very well be instrumental in killing a bill we do not want. And while we're on the topic - you shouldn't overclock an AMD T-bird over 1 Ghz if you have a via 733 chipset, otherwise you run the risk of screwing up the ACPI power settings, which could cause normal operating hardware (like CD-ROMs and Floppys and anyuthing else) to all be assigned to the same IRQ, which can wreak havoc. really?? this is somethine I did not know!! The viewer, and indeed *every* viewer of this piece, is equally as creative and unique in the process. Not only does each view become a unique and never repeated creation, but the view has the ability to *suggest* definition via direction of the drawing crosses by moving the mouse into the area of the crosses. Again, let me reiterate this, I find this to be very important. The main aspect of the original artist is still within the piece, never to be understood by the viewers, but yet, the viewer is completely equaled with the original artist. this is *exactly* what toneshifting is with repetition and definition art... I'm not trying to start another heated debate, but I am kinda full of joy right now that I have come across such a work that puts the theory of toneshifting into a simple and accurate visual realm... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.thedemonstration.com http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com search djdarwin on napster

Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment...
wait a second... Where are you sending your waves as they record?? You *need* to send them in an no OS HD, and it *should* be 7200 rpm's. But the real key is that there can NOT be any programs or op system on the disk you are recording to, not even a partitioned drive. If you do, you run a huge risk of failure, unless you have a P4 or over clocked water cooled AMD 1.5 GHz and a gig of ram and a 10,000 rpm drive... even then, chances are there for record failure... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.thedemonstration.com http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com search djdarwin on napster - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2001 12:12 PM Subject: Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment... Re: [313] OT / recording streams
just set soundforge to record the stream, that's how I captured the mills @ liquidroom set of Axisrecords. Get SF ready to record, and then pull up you little windows speaker by the clock, that's the windows mixer. Select options, then check record, and the recording mixer will show up, check stuff till you find what channel the stream is coming through (often line-in), if you have a sound blaster live!, they have an added option on the windows mixer of record what you hear, and your set... if you have a professional high-bit rate soundcard in addition to a soundblaster live!, turn off the drivers for the higher level card, I found SoundBlaster's really don't like to assist in record if you have another card, especially in SF... Now there's another way if you have a unstable soundforge (one that hates long recording, or a slow CPU). You can get ultraplayer at ultraplayer.com. In there is an option to record direct to MP3. so you can record the stream straight into MP3, then use winamp to convert the MP3 to wave, and do your thing... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.thedemonstration.com http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com search djdarwin on napster - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, February 18, 2001 6:19 PM Subject: [313] OT / recording streams howdy folks is there any way of recording streaming audio into a wave editor like soundforge or wavelab? reply privately thanks. sorry for the off topic post anyone heard the geology 2 mix CD? p-dogg - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] the LONG short of dj sets
I fully agree with you here... however, and someone brought this up... There are DJ's, like Danny Teneglia and others, who *do* let the records work themselves, but do it in a way that encompasses a grander picture. But, there is a difference between these types, and the types that you and I (and others) become critical of. They not only let the record do *all* the work, but fail, totally, to link the records or put them in the proper place for the proper mood... I don't like 50 records an hour, or 10 records an hour, I enjoy 5 minute mixes on three tables... In other words, I personally enjoy it when there is perpetually two or records in the mix... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.thedemonstration.com http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com search djdarwin on napster , - Original Message - From: juliette morgan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2001 8:05 PM Subject: [313] the LONG short of dj sets After reading this thread for a while now, I would like to respond to Lester's original post..; IMO, you see records being played out longer than before (i.e. the 80's) due to the fact that dj's just aren't quick mixing with the energy like they used to; doing tricks, taking chances, etc... the records being made today do all the work for you (95% of which, IMO, are quite 2-dimensional /or gimmicky..). In addition, this is still TOO much work for some people who don't want to get off their ass- the same people who are creating ways to mix on their computer; now they don't EVER have to leave their desk to be a dj!! (Sorry, this is an entirely different thread...) Newcomers let the quality of the set fall ENTIRELY on their records, instead of using their SKILLS to pump up the crowd. Give some people nowadays a crate of records from just 8 years ago they wouldn't know what to do with themselves. To me, I would rather hear someone using THEIR creativity with a bunch of deep, sick tracks (see Traxx, Dj Hell, Theo, Carlos Souffront, etc.) to make a special moment on the dancefloor rather than the latest remix of (insert your fave cheesy childhood pop song here) played next to the flavor of the moment ravehouse/salsa/buildup/trance amalgam again again. Going to Motor is quite the museum for this nowadays, djs who used to beat it for 13 years now play the latest greatest hands-in-the-air cut that the guy last week played (or the guy who opened). So long as you can beat match nowadays you got those 20 current tunes that'll make the glow sticks move faster, make a tape send it to (insert your fave club from the D here..)!! It doesn't matter if you have style all your own, you will only get paid 1/3 of what the big names get (even though they just started playing this cheesy recently too (shhh.. don't tell!!)). But I digress. In response to... I too hate the 'look mama how many records I can squeeze into an hour'-style. Well, true. Anyone who is playing that many *just* for the sake of doing so... is a moron. I do however think that some up comers need to be trained as to when enough is enough-- 8 minutes of Jaguar and counting... the more i read this, the more i ask myself if you guys have ever heard a really superb dj (which e.g. jeff mills is a solarsystem away from). And finally someone who dares to say that Jeff Mills is not God behind the decks. Mills never claims to be God, why would you listen to anyone quoting such tripe? However if you're denying Mills' ability as an exquisite dj and artist, I would be curious to see who is 'superb' in your book. You know I heard Oakenfold is pretty smooth. Same for Guiness Stout and babies' bottoms... Smoothness all the way baby! yeah. confused when i heard a good track and another one is rolling in like a train in my face, 5 beats faster than the one which is just playing (umfgadumppengbaengbumm). even if i seem to be alone on this point of view, but i can't dance to that. OBVIOUSLY...! Who wants to hear someone who can't even match beats??? Thought that was a given. Besides, why are giving your cash to these fools anyway?? Don't support the thieves, crackheads the hard-of-hearing (no offense to the deaf) in the scene. If everyone supported the true jacks we ALL would be much better off... i love to spin two tracks for 10 minutes (if possible) together and play around with them. *yawn*... j|m (not going to see Mills @ the State cuz dj shortround's not opening up) =) _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

darwin stop talking out your ass. K... you always scrutinize everything too much. K... how can you say that creative djs are lost. you dont think theres any good djs anymore?? No, when did I say that?? I said that lately, the notion of the mix has been down played by playing records for the crowd, as opposed to creating a new song... And another thing, and someone brought this up. Play the whole record does not mean your bad, Vath speaks of that very well I think... ive heard one of your dj sets and it wasnt that great. First off, I play everything from deep house to trance, with influence from techno. So, I don't really expect to many people on here to like my sets, nor do I demand that. And since when did I say I was anything great?? All I know is that I try to do something the best I can. But, never once, did I suggest I was anything remarkable... Why is it that people are so freakin' irritable?? Re: [313] the longg dj set
Im kinda flattered that I am the point of frustration in your life!!! The reason why it says [LIVE @ FUSE] is so people find it easier, same with the artist names... And I *did* explain why I have it on my files, its because I had to download the two other ones (both of which are live and bootlegged). Life... is the only one I made for release, which never did do to license problems... Look, I felt stupid too when I did a vanity search on napster and WHAM, all that came up. I respect and understand your criticisms, do you really think I, or any other artist for that matter, would want to appear to come off like that? As a fake?? I would hope not!! I OKed this action, and it was a mistake, and it got circulated before I could go over his house and check it (Hell, I didn't even thinking of checking it till a week later, I never thought it would be an issue till later in the game!!;). The main reason behind Sphere putting it there is so people who might be interested in one artist, or one genre (live @ fuse is in itself a Napster genre;) would find my recordings, three in all. That's all there is to look into that; it wasn't some devious slanting move, if you were looking up Saunderson, you *may* find my CD worth a shot. That's why there these brackets [*] around the added stuff, to separate the title and my name from the artists and that LIVE @ FUSE garbage We all screw up, I didn't even do this, and I'll say I screwed up. Is that OK?? I Kinda like that Life... Re: [313] the longg dj set
This is a great question!!! I think its because the whole notion of the DJ being a creative artist is lost. The newer DJ's never even thought of creating, they entertain, rockstardom, the very thing we rebelled against to begin with... Instead of oh, I am going to take this hook, and this break down and create something new, it has become *exactly* what a wedding or radio DJ or a POP band does, they play *exactly* what the crowd wants to hear... The older DJ's, or some of the persistent ones (like myself) find the creation to be for more interesting, and far more valid. But the problem here is that this is very hard to communicate to a new DJ. So many times, that I actually got in arguments with normal non techno orientated people about DJing. They could not understand that it can be more that just playing records... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.thedemonstration.com http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com search djdarwin on napster - Original Message - From: Lester Kenyatta Spence [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Monday, January 29, 2001 11:27 AM Subject: [313] the longg dj set i've been listening to betaloung, and groovetechand there is a distinctly different approach to dj sets than say ten + years ago. rather than about a MINUTE of a song, then a segue, djs now play the whole songor close to it, before bringing in something else. does this occur as a result of djs having to spin 6-8 hour setsor is there something else going on? peace lks - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Got this off another list... I know this is a more music orientated list, but I thought someone would find it interesting.. forgot to attach message.. here it is.. this is happening in detroit.. THE POLICE ARE MONITORING PKU and 313KIDS: The Police and the News Media raided the House on Friday. Several People were arrested for drug posession and equipment was confiscated.
