Re: [313] GIrls and Detroit
As a person living in Windsor, I feel very fortunate to live right near Detroit, alot of the music being produced here in the MW scene has influenced my direction of producing and manipulating sounds, travelling in and around the MW scene, Chicago/Pittsburgh etc, via specific parties, I've always found that Detroit is more open to females being in control and show more respect then any other cities in and around the MW, although personally I can't stand bars, my influence is more "underground" then most of my friends creating music, and Detroit has always played a huge part in my direction... -- "After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." --Aldous Leonard Huxley (1894-1963) Emanuel

Thomas Brinkmann
Sorry for being redundant here, I've heard a while ago that Thomas will be in the Ohio area sometime in June, I got the opportunity to catch him, here in Windsor about 1 or 2 years ago, when Richie and Thomas were working on their Concept VR, for anyone that has any information on the upcoming event, and if this is actually really happening, I'd appreciate the info... thank you -- .you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. belt driven decks,no efxs,909? yes please
Umm, I've finally decided to release my final mix CD in time for the Detroit Music Festival, for all yeah waiting for the scoop on this one, I will start it off with two minutes of complete silence in which I will illustrate the spacial dynamics of sound not really being heard, the texture momentum of our frequency range as a human being which I might add is between 20 hrz to 20,000 hrz will fluently be explored, I plan on adding frequency ranges to which only neighbouring yard animals or personal pets would be able to fully understand, I find that exploring these organic sounds to the extent that... "hey guys can I play my synth here?" will fully compress the sound dynamics that I've been searching for, my drive to find new ways of finding patterns within, within, within patterns will leave most of you banging your hands for no particular reason, waiting to order something at McDonalds...do look for my new way of making ya'll move at the Festival cuz I plan on staying there (in one spot) for "captains log start date 9383 rounded off to the neareast decimal point, we've travel..." the entire 3 days...=) now that's inovation =) Emanuel

RE: (idm) Re: (313) NY Times Electronic Article
I have to totatly agree here, many people start in scene almosts clueless to what has happend before, and jumping on the bandwagon of a famous Dj playing at the time, people don't realize that the history goes way back, and Detroit has been shaped from the begining by people with soul...I have the outmost respect for UR, and all the inovators, they are truly the heart of the underground. .keep your hands off each other unless you tend to love, stay still stay together. Not to take away from Mr. Hawtin, but is it perhaps because he's white? After all, every other Detroit artist of note from that period is black. Atkins, May, Saunderson, Larkin, Banks, Craig, Mills, Hood, Deason, Baxter, Oldham, etc. etc. I like some of the old FUSE and Plus 8 stuff myself, but, you know, wouldn't Carl Craig or Mad Mike be a more appropriate choice? They seem to epitomize the Detroit sound both then and now and were originators, innovators and elevators throughout the past dozen years. Richie Hawtin started a couple years after these guys, wasn't as directly involved in the scene and as far as I can gather from this far away wasn't even liked by some of the people in Detroit, and most of his best early stuff as FUSE et al. seems indebted to Underground Resistance, Metroplex, Chicago acid, etc. That doesn't mean it is bad or his accomplishments should be doubted, but it does seem a stretch to call him a pioneerrather call him a skilled producer with good taste.
