label design and music are equally important.
Some labels have a minimal approach to design or at least they try even
though it doesn't look right.

I actually thought the music was important. Seems like it's secondary

I just bought the new Moodymann record. Whilst the music was kinda

I feel sorry those people who release a record with nothing more than
a

I thought exactly the same thing Robin, although I was a bit wary abt
going
up against the wisdom of May and Atkins - that's not meant ironically
at
all. I respect them and their opinions 100%, although I might
disagree.

That point is a difficult one. A bit of a dilemma:

On the one hand part of the attraction of the music we're into *is*
it's
very 'imperfection' on any number of fronts, on sound quality;
structurally;

production. Imperfections whether intentional or unintentional can add
almost a magical quality to a piece of music *heard in the right
context*.
The same could especially be said (imho) about Derrick May's own work
- I
mean basically, during the era in which he did his only
non-collaborative
work (no offence intended in that, it's just a fact that it was a
while ago)

electronic music sounded what could be called 'unfinished' or put more
politely, 'minimal'.

And then there is Robin's point about the sketchiness of some
productions
being quite necessary if the music is going to be programmed with
other

tracks ...

However, I can definitely see the point about some things being quite
patently thrown together (or seeming to be) and that point where
minimal
becomes just downright lazy, unimaginative, or dare I say it - a
display of

a *lack* of talent rather than display of talent.

It would be helpful though to know what tracks May had in mind when
he made
that statement (but of course we never will), 'cause in the last 6
months
I've heard a great deal of quality music coming from Detroit and
coming from
everywhere. I've heard some mediocre house, techno, broken beat, etc
etc
too, but not as much good stuff - which you do have to seek out if
you want
to overwhelm what would seem like a stream (but not a deluge) of cack
- that
being a crucial point! Nothing different in that today compared to
ten years

ago. (mho.)

Unfortunately, this mix didn't turn out like I'd hoped.
It's kinda sloppy in a couple of parts. Hopefully you
don't think any of my mess is too disastrous. I've never
actually tried to mix an entire set of broken beat stuff before.

ha... no worries! Such is the life of someone who chooses to mix this
mad
style! it's a cross to bear i hear ya ;) i feel like some of it
does
work well for a fast cut-n-paste fashion, while others (esp. the
stringy
ones) you can really ride and wring them out over some acapella beats.
 But
to always take the safe transitions, intros and outtros is just too
boring.

I have yet to hear a super-locked-down-tight mix of something with
this much

differing percussion signatures and polyrhythmic breaks and disjointed
action going on... and in the cases where I know the tracks being
played, I
can often hear even the most experienced DJs taking a mixture of risks
and
'safely mixes' (ha) the ambient or beatless break areas as places to
'take'

to the next new track, Orrin Walters included. And there is a time for
both. I'd say such is the way of the style, I mean it's BROKE-N !
anyone
who says they can lock a set super tight of this style isn't playing
the
craziest stuff in the genre... which to me is the most interesting.
Not the
noodley, faux-jazz wonky stuff, (which i am fading fast on) but the
real

experimental 'technosoul' side of it, like mustang, titonton, domu,
aardvarck(!difficult!), rednose, genre, numbian mindz, seiji, nu era,
son of

scientist, moonstar, total science, etc.

hats off for not pre-planning every mix out for the whole thing...
that is
so BORING. personally i can never do the same mix more than once or
twice
max, life (behind 1200's) is too short and there's too much fun in
riding
the randomness of it all, flipping it over and trying out that b-side
you

never really gave proper attention to, experimentation, etc.

BTW - Brian Gillespie has pulled off some pretty heroic broken beat
flavored
DJ sets in detroit but he'll also tell ya the sh!t ain't easy and
frankly i
think it is (and should be) mixed with other genres to really stand
out and
create impact.. I love to hear it with similar 'feeling' 4/4 stuff
too, UR
especially comes to mind, Ibex, Recloose, As One, Urban Tribe, even
Plaid..

(not exactly 4/4 but you know what i mean).

DJ Aaron Shin is also great at mixing broken beat style, he lived in
Chicago

but has also relocated to New York, and he was into DJing this style (+
house) from day ONE.. he taught me a lot and turned me on to sounds I
never
heard before. He goes more vocal than I can personally, but if he is
DJ'ing
out and about in NYC do catch him. Very diverse and he always has the
latest
cuts, he's on the hunt for the new white lables like Ted Nugent on
opening

day of bowhunting season. :P

For everyone in and around the music business (Distributors,
Artists, Dj's
, Press , Music lovers and Buyers)... please read this
message carefully!!
(and sorry if you get this twice!)

An important message about Groovetech.com !

For everyone who supports independant labels and artists...
(the source where all good music comes from in the first
placeno matter
wich sound or music style it is)

We feel that we have to advice people not to deal with
Groovetech if you
don't want to help and destroy the independant music industry.

In our opinion this is a company who steels money from small
independant
labels in order to build their own imperium (with our money!)
Our advice : Don't cooperate with them in any way... you
don't need them!

Groove Tech owes us money for invoices wich should have been
payed months
and months ago!! We gave them more then reasonable opportunity to pay
us... but they don't do anything in order to handle this in a
good way!
They are lying and just being arrogant and they ignore
reminders, phone
calls, emails etc. This is about amounts of money they can
pay without big
problems... but small independant companies are no high
priority for them
and they know that there is not much these small companies
can do against
this sort of thievery by a company the size of Groovetech.

e believe there are enough other online retailers or radio
stations where
you can get what you need without harming others...

note : We are not trying to damage anyone.. but we want
people to know how
Groovetech (the so called #1 online retailer) works.

We can not accept the way they treat us. They are damaging us!!
Its just a matter of principles and good manners!

Offcourse we are no judge and we don't want to judge them...
we just tell
our experiences and give you an advice based on these experiences.

Thanks for your attention and sorry if this is spam to you.
next mail out will be about music again!

hey simon... what's up with these fill tracks? they're some of
the

most
melodic and engaging works that i have heard. but they are only a
minute

or
so long! can you stretch any of them out a bit? i wanna kick back
with

headphones and melt with the fill tracks for at least 15 minutes.

please.

: )

I was listening to his live in Chicago PA again on the bus tonight,
and I

think there are two possible responses to this:

a) he is the real 'subliminal seducer'.

b) he can't orchestrate a track to the point of finishing it at a
length

greater than 4 minutes.

I think anyone familiar with his work will agree the answer is 'a',
and Carl
Craig is not, if fact, the subliminal seducer. ;) Or maybe they both
are in

different ways?

You could level the same criticism against The Black Dog's 'Music For
Adverts and Short Films', which is one of the best albums of any sort
of
music in my opinion. It's less about each track than the mood changes.
Or...

the whole thing works and is successful precisely because it leaves you
wanting so much more of the same.

As dance music afficianados, I think it's particularly hard to
acclimate to
this style, although I MUCH prefer it to crap DJ's letting records
play for
10+ minutes at a time before moving on. I mean, that creates zero
vibe. No
one does, or should play successive 10+ minute tracks. That's just
stupid.

It doesn't work. CiM's style is a refreshing change from
repitition-habituation.

Hell quits the biz. Citing unoriginality and a post 9/11 economic market;

The UK record label will be called ?Quasi Moda? and will take off

wow, if seal sang on it it would have a chance to be the greatest
 record ever.

There will also be a Hell/React 2CD compilation
released in early Autumn featuring music from Front 242 and many

i dont know about this. i love 242 and the klf and all those kind

have turned out. skinny puppy's solo stuff was horrible IMO. i

Last year at the dutch Dance Valley festival he fell from this golf car and
broke his arm. He had to play the final slot at the Techno Tent, which was
 hosted by Cocoon.

Richie Hawtin was playing before him, and was still around when Vath
 started.
Hawtin would put one of Vath's records on the deck, put the needle on it,
 and he
then would help Vath putting the headphone on his head. Vath also had
 someone to
flip through his records for him. Very funny to see, but he still managed to
 rock the place!

Sven's a weird one. He definately has the capacity for trance (duh- the

spends more time waving his hands than mixing records.

I will see and hear him this coming friday in Amsterdam
So i will let you know about the waving in the air:-) but i
must say the times that i have heard him spin he blew me
of my feet with some amazing techno...heard him spin for
six hours at Time Warp in Germany last year...best set
i've heard for ages, the whole set was a perfect build-up
from start to finish...20.000 people went completly nuts!!
Got the whole set at home for those interessted.

Okay , back to obscure techno business now..

GUNJACK
(Sheep UK, Deafmosaic Tokyo, Techno City Records)(Tokyo, Japan)
With the acclaimed release of his last single, outlands on Sheep records
out of Birmingham proper, the Jak is finally receiving some long overdue and
well deserved attention and if you see him play out, you will understand
why. With studio credits too numerous to mention, his records are played by
the likes of Surgeon, Ben Sims, James Ruskin and the ever elusive Jeff
Mills. Now, with a series of very rare U.S. appearances, the Jak intends to
give a hard education to those not already in the know.

Look out for his new label DEAFMOSAIC, launching this summer with worldwide

Another notable cd is the new forcelab mix by algorightm. Same concept as

We had the pleasure of seeing Derrick play close up in a small irish pub in
Cambridge last night. 3 hour set, the place was at capacity by 10:30. What
can I say, that guy is so in control of the music he plays it's
unbelieveable. What a talent. What a talent. What a talent.

It's so rare to see someone who captures the essence of the DJ performance
 so comprehensively.

Once again House music saves the day.

on 10/24/01 8:55 PM, Mike Taylor at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I guess the one question you are not address is how much control does a
performer have over their music as an indicator of liveness. I think 4 guys
with guitars and each one of them randomly naming a genre and a key to play
before they improvise the music in is a lot more live than say a guy with a
 song-based sequencer pressing play.

It is not a paradigm shift, it is common sense. The more random
chance/spontainious decision making can play a role in your performance the
more live you are. I think there is something innately more live about a
jazz trio improvising on a standard than there is in a guy pressing play on
a DAT, or the sequencer equivalent. It is not rockist predjudice, it is just
a common sense bench-mark for all musicians. Playback is always less live
than perfomance, and as electronic musicians dealing with midi and sequenced
audio we are somewhere between being truly live and being playback,
depending on the interface a performer chooses to use.

I have always said that I would rather hear a bunk live act with good songs,
than somebody playing live who doesnt have songs. And as for delivery, it is
just a matter of principle. If you are claiming that you are live, and you
aren't, you are going to be called out.

The future of this music is not DJ's, it is post-techno perfomance.
I am going to go as far to say that in 10-15 years techno is finally going
to become the future jazz that it has been promising for years
now. The real future of this music is in played, customizable, interactive
music interfaces. Rather than playing a midi sax, or a keyboard to control
synths, the future will be controller interfaces that are hardware and
software customizable that act as both controllers and sequencers. A live
act will include 2-4 people improvising with non-standard electronic
instruments jamming with some kind of computer based AI music system.
Instead of buying new synths every couple years, you are going to program a
new interface on your control hardware. Instead of playing back pre-recorded
sound or note information, the music will be written and manipulated on the
 spot.

Alan Kurzweil(formerly of Kurzweil Music Systems, inventor of the K250) has
some very interesting insights into the future of music and creativity in
general. If you are interested in ideas about possible futures in electronic
music, his last book The Age Of Spiritual Machines is an excellent read.

 Sorry for yet another rant.

 Take care,
 Mike

That's my point, the reason a lot of electronic music producers do
lives is because people are used to go see live artists, and they expect
 performing skills.

People, in general, also expect the 'look' of someone performing (ie.
strumming the strings of a guitar, pressing down on the keys of a synth,
etc)... it's just a shift in the paradigm that is required. The performers
have made it (by using laptops and such), it's time the audiences make it.
But they are always going to be slower than the performers in making the
switch (or even giving up their expectations of what live means).
If a performer is using a keyboard to play over some prearranged track are
they playing live anymore? If they spin a record in their live set are
they a DJ or a live performer?

Do you like the music? Then what the f~ck does it matter how they go about
 bringing it to you.

Change your paradigm and your ass will follow.

You have to do disc at once burning and set your gaps to 0 sec.. Except for
the gap in the first track before it all starts.. That has to be 2 sec. Some

i saw recloose play. he sucked. can't keep a mix on beat for more than 5 or
6 bars if his life depended on it. played some gay house and turned it up a
notch with some better stuff for the last 20 min of his set but by then it
wasnt enough to save a lackluster dj set. played a lot of electro/breaks
inspired house and gospel sampling house records. maybe if i would've gotten
there early it could've been better but i got there at 3 as recloose was
going on and wasn't too into the party, which was vibeless at best.

 hey,

what's going on in germany over new years since i'll be there...again. i
don't think i'll be heading out toward berlin, but it highly likely i'll
 be
around munich, or if worse comes to worse, duesseldorf.

2000-10-26 Thread Jake
check out http://erave.org/calendar/
(select michigan from the menu)

there's not that many events on there now but maybe some 313 locals could
add some events worth noting?

thanks

Re: [313] Stacey Pullen in Melbourne

isn't techno detroit related?

right, the only good techno comes from djs who have been playing

 Not at all man...

I'm just saying that I signed up to this list because it's the '313-techno'
(not 313 and/or techno) mailing list. I don't mind discussing more
established Detroit artists like Stacey Pullen, but I also want info on
newer artists like Andres, Ibex, Bill Van Loo and Marc Floyd.

Sims, Beyer and Lekebusch might be cool (and more power to them)... but
they're not from Detroit, or really Detroit related.

 That's all...:)

Re: [313] Ben Sims

2000-10-12 Thread Jake
speaking of ben sims, anyone know where i can find some streaming audio from
him? i've heard his live set from fuse, but i hear that he's much more
versatile than what's in that set..

Ive seen him twice now, once on 3 decks. I thought both times he was
 incredible.
