2013-11-26 Thread jeremy bispo
An interesting read.

http://testpressing.org/2013/11/eddie-fowlkes-detroit-wax/

This is what a lot of people don’t know about me. I am a legend in
Detroit, because everyone will tell you “Fowlkes jumpstarted this
whole game of Detroit Techno”. People will tell you that because I had
that epiphany from God to start this entire domino effect. A lot of
people find that hard to believe, but it is the truth. Kevin
understands how he got his career; if it wasn’t for me, he probably
would not even be making music.

(313) BBC: 808s, 303s and 909s

2013-03-18 Thread jeremy bispo
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01r3xly

Listened to much hip-hop or dance music? If so, then you would have
undoubtedly heard the sounds of either the Roland 808, 303 or 909 -
but what are they and what do these numbers mean?

BBC Radio 1's Kutski discovers how three small electronic boxes from
the 1980's sculpted the sound of both Hip-Hop and Dance music. He
makes it his mission to track down the team that worked on the Roland
808, 303 and 909 machines to see if they had any idea their inventions
would have such a massive influence on contemporary music.

He plots their integral role in the development of hip-hop, house and
techno; and the myriad of sub-genres that have spawned from these.
Kutski chats to DJ Premier, Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler, The 2Bears,
Flostradamus and Pete Tong amongst others as he founds out why
producers around the globe continue to be obsessed with these sounds,
more than three decades after they were first created.

(313) THE DUMMY GUIDE TO DETROIT TECHNO, PART I A brief guide to Detroit techno’s beginnings.

2012-08-05 Thread jeremy bispo
When we started the Dummy Guides back in 2009, we did so to illuminate
a a scene, genre or artist crucial but lacking clarity, an interesting
subject that few have cleared and concisely explained in a way
relevant to readers of this website. This next guide, however, focuses
on a genre so vast and talked about that its writing presented a
challenge: Detroit techno. This sublime, incredibly influential music
has been discussed and memorialised hundreds of times – just last
month, London promoters Dollop ran a series of events hosting the Juan
Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May – that it resisted a clear,
simple story, much less one that would fit on one page.

For this reason, our guide is split into two parts. The first, below,
details what was later known as the first wave – the birth of the
revolutionary machine funk that became known as Detroit Techno. The
second, out next week, will follow the explosion overseas and the
changing shape of the form in its hometown. We hope you enjoy the
feature.

Jus-ed, making his long awaited San Francisco debut, represents all
that is deep on the East Coast. Marcellus Pittman, making his West
Coast debut, brings the Detroit flavor like few jocks can. Lance
DeSardi's resided in San Francisco for years now, but there's little
doubt his Dallas flavor permeates through all of his sounds. Recent

hero, delivering strictly vinyl, jak influenced house sets. Although
reared on San Francisco's Wicked Collective and Doc Martin, AYLI

welcome you to enjoy all of our influences, under one roof, together
for the first time.

Skrillex seems to be quite bright about what he does. How old is he? I'm
under the impression that he's a guy in the early 20s - if that's true and
he was already able to develop a musical background that allows him to
reassemble everything that worked during the last 20 years of electronic
dance music, that's something i can at least respect.

Funny as at Creamfields fest last year in Oz Derrick and Kevin played at
the same time as Skrillex and the crowds were quite distinct. ;)

Skrillex is such a contentious figure now he avoids interviews or lays
down conditions - it began with a facetious Guardian article. NME just did a
story on this. It's a new trend starting among DJs now, wanting copy
approval, question approval, etc, etc - of course it's never the real
innovators or those with something interesting to say. You have no idea at
some of the diva antics that go on these days... and the image

| ABOUT THE ARTISTS |

STEFFI
You can trust Steffi as a dj implicitly, in form and content. Her
skills are extraordinary, as you can see when she really works the
records and eq’s; no soft blending, but mixing in its original sense.
She features a plethora of styles and varies every single one of her
sets ranging from Electronic Disco, to serious Detroit- or Dutch
Electro, whereas original, funky and fat House always will be her
solid foundation.

Since 2000, Steffi runs her label Klakson together with Dutch producer
Dexter. Apart from the special cover design (black and white photos),
Klakson first and foremost impresses by music: Records by artists like
Dexter, Fastgraph, Duplex, Seymor Bits, Putsch 79 or Mr. Cisco have
been supported by the likes of Laurent Garnier, DJ Hell, Andrew
Weatherall and Miss Kittin. It surely is an aficionado’s label
occupying a gateway between ambitious club music and humour.

MIKE HUCKABY
Tastemaker, Educator, Sound Designer, and Motor City Proponet. Mike
Huckaby has done much for Detroit electronic music. The man behind the
once legendary Record Time store has gathered an encyclopedic
knowledge of music. He is one of those guys who knows all the roots
and culture of electronic dance music. He is a person who can see
beyond the hype and divisions within the scene. Mike knows exactly
what the music is. With productions for labels like Rick Wade's
Harmonie Park outfit, tons of remixes, and of course his own Deep
Transportation and S Y N T H imprints.

BEAUTIFUL SWIMMERS
You know when you scoop a record at some flea because the art looks
tight, but it turns out that the shit is wack except for some little
beautiful chunk? Yea you do. They rescued the good parts from many
terrible records that otherwise just would've collected bad vibes on
their floors. These dudes are trying to bring back something like
early Daniel Wang but mix it with heavy boogie visions (''Swimmers
Groove'') and all these psuedo-African slow cuts from the 90s that we
keep finding (''O Yea''). Lifeguards for the vibe.

LOVEFINGERS
Andrew Hogge, better known as Lovefingers, needs little introduction
amongst the global disco elite. His internationally acclaimed mix of
999 songs at lovefingers.org has had a undeniable impact on the
burgeoning eclectic dance scene of today. A Los Angeles native, Andrew
hosted Blackdisco Social Club since 2001 (including guests Thomas
Bullock, Special Disco Version and Prins Thomas) before heading off to
New York City where he resides today. Andrew runs the Blackdisco
imprint, a well known edits series which finds its releases in the
bags of top jocks like DJ Harvey, James Murphy and Todd Terje. In the
past few years, Lovefingers has performed at the Whitney Biennial,
Doug Aitken's Sleepwalkers premiere at MoMA, Henrik Vibskov's Tent
City exhibition in Seoul, repeated summers at P.S.1's Warm-Up as well
as numerous tours through North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
One half of The Stallions, along-side long time disco cohort Lee
Douglas, Andrew co-wrote and produced the Stallions' Suite for Findlay
Brown. This 12 minute epic journey of modern Disco and Spaghetti
Western themes has received praise from disco giants like Ashley
Beadle, DJ Cosmo, Prins Thomas, Pilooski, and to the Stallions'
delight, been played by the legendary David Mancuso at The Loft. The
Stallions have been busy with a slew of remixes as well as their debut
album, of which you can be sure will change the scope of modern dance
music. 2010 has also seen Lovefingers' new label, ESP Institute, debut
with an EP by Sombrero Galaxy, the first of many exciting releases
planned over the next year.

A group of friends on the Monterey Peninsula launched ASR 13 years
ago. Over the years, that group of friends has grown and changed, as
have the scope and reach of our parties. We’ve produced countless free
parties in the park, loft parties in both San Francisco and Oakland;
and hosted numerous club nights in San Francisco, several renegade
outdoor night parties and one campout. We’ve had guests from near and
abroad, slowly building a strong stable of ASR family DJs.

Our love for throwing top-notch parties not simply to our own liking,
but “As You Like It,” provided us with a backbone shaped by the music
community itself that kept the music current and the production among
the best in the Bay Area. The relationships that we’ve built are
life-long, yet the production company is coming to an end. We’ve
transitioned into other places in life that no longer afford us the
time or energy to produce the same quality of events together.

We’re excited to invite you back, one last time, to help us celebrate
our 13-year anniversary that promises to deliver on all levels. Please
join us as we close this chapter of our lives together on a high note.

Re: (313) For the Bay Area 313 heads - Rob Hood

2009-09-21 Thread jeremy bispo
Thanks Patrick. I finally was able to subscribe to the list. GMail and
Hyperreal weren't getting along well.

Click on any of the DJ names on the Web Flyer for bios, mp3s and set
times: http://www.asr-family.com/

Clint Stewart is one you might be especially interested in. He just
got back from Berlin, where he played at the Watergate Club and
Tresor. He's a solid up and coming techno and tech-house DJ and
producer now hailing out of SF.

The rest of the main room is different shades of house music, but you
can check out the mp3s on the site.

Hope of the true Bay Area tech-heads make it out.

Just noticed Rob Hood will be playing this Saturday over in Oakland at
the As You Like It party. Unfortunately I don't know too much about
the local supports, but none the less looks like a decent party.

 Some info here: http://www.asr-family.com/

Apparently he had to cancel his Australian and Asian tour due to a
death in the family which is sad on both sides. Condolences to his
loss. I'm sure he'll make it to Oz again soon.

Hoping to make it across the Bridge this weekend, might catch up with
 a few of you.

 Peace,
 Patrick.
