Picked these up Saturday at Bent Crayon;

John Beltran - Part 1 EP : My first Styrax EP. These are some great

Fair enough. Well, there's always next time to blow your wig back. I'm
just happy you had the moxy to be honest. It's all subjective and we
may totally disagree with an opinion, but it's interesting to see how
differently people will respond to the same stimulus. At least, I find

Now that's what I'm talking about. Thanks for the comments. I, for
one, have been pretty lazy when it comes to beats in the past, which
I thought was odd because I'm a pretty good drummer. The drums don't
change in Intact and I can see how that might be a sticking point
for some people. It is for me in a lot of instances, especially in
the music we're working on now. However, it doesn't bother me in this
case because the rest of the song changes so much melodically.
Intact, in general, is supposed to be reminiscent of an older style
and feel. Kind of a minimal track with a classic Detroit stringiness
 to it.

Well I think it definitely works in that regard, and is reminiscent of
the older style, when techno was so similar to house, and both had
similar arrangements. A great example of this is TP's 'Your Love',
which has the same beat unchanging throughout, and he even pushes out
the repitition to 16 bar loops for most of the track, but it's such a
hook that it carries you with it anyway. With that track I always
wished there had been another version, because I've always thought it
worked despite the arrangement, not because of it. That's pretty much
how I feel about Intact too.

(313) moodymann-stoneodenjoe rant

2006-04-07 Thread Lee Herrington
Happy Friday folks! I have a completely un-called for and un-productive
time waster for you today. It involves moodymann's stoneodenjoe track.
I've been playing it a lot these past few days, and I wonder if anyone else
has bothered trying to decipher the thuroughly garbled rant that precedes
the track. I've been able to translate a few choice f-bombs and the phrase,
flat out, but not much else. Anyone else have any thoughts? I apologize
for the absolutely pointless nature of this task, but its Friday, and didn't
some important historical, literary figure make some vague remark about the
nobility of pursuing pointless endeavors simply for the fun of it?

Greetings list,

I finally got my hands on fabrice's my 4 stars remixed EP. I know it's
been out for awhile, but I'm always the last to acquire hot material. I
have to say this is prime fl work. The ian o'brien remix does not
disappoint either.

Just a side note... I enjoyed fabrice's new stuff in the cold dank of my
basement. I've had to transport my entire setup from the attic, as we are
expecting a new addition to the family. I know that I will have to deal
with moisture issues when the climate warms up. Anyone have any thoughts on
preserving vinyl in a mildy hostile environment? You can see the setup here

Hi Tom,
I've tried like heck to download those interviews. No success so far. I
did find that clicking the non-embedded clip link after the first QT
window opens provides you with the content in a separate QT app. I've had
better luck watching the Theo interviews that way.

Theo fun fact no.1 - the dude got married. [did not know that.]

This is great stuff! For some reason I wasn't able to find the Theo
Parrish lecture earlier on that site either.

But wow, this is so cool. And funny too. That second part is pure first
class stand up comedy. I don't entirely agree with his standpoints on
vinyl vs downloads, but Theo sure is some speaker. He should do this
more often.

Once again, inispiring stuff. And I'm so jealous of those RBMA

Following lunch, it was then time for the Theo Parrish lecture. This
was something I had been looking forward to for a while. Once things
got underway, Theo took control. He started off by playing Stevie
Wonder's 'As' and talking about how Lil' Louis played the track at a
club in Chicago when Theo was 15 or 16 and how it blew his mind
because he was used to just thinking of that track as something he
sang with his mom. Theo was full of stories from his days in Chicago
and Detroit and every track he would play seemed to put it in a new
light for me. I think the lecture went on for over 3 hours. Theo was
opening up about everything, from talking about going to college for
art, to DJing and production work. It was definitely something special
 to hear Theo today.
 etc...

couple of tastes of the deep-ended prescription sound, along with a
touch of detroit from dan bell, and recent new-old sounds from aroy

I guess I'm lucky. I picked up both of those titles in a 'cut-out' bin at
one of the local CD shops. Lance might be able to speak to this subject.
The store was called My Generation [Westlake, Ohio]. They had a great habit
of moving 20.00 to 26.00 dollar 'electronic' import CD's to the 66% discount
bin on a regular basis. I think I got Tony Drake in 1997 for 10.00 and DEC
that same year for 11.00 USD.

Hey

A while back when I was debating experimenting with filesharing (and can we
please miss discussing the morality of this this one time - we've done it
before and the points have been made, I use it for one thing only: checking
out records I have an inclination to buy before doing so, usually older
pieces which are only available second hand and so don't have mp3s up on
shop sites) everybody recommended Soulseek.
I've been using it for a while now but to be honest I'm not finding it as
useful for listening to rarities as I hoped.
For example right now I'm searching for Aquarian Project, t'n' i (I'm after
tracks by these 2 I was tipped off about by posts on this list!) and
Instant House and coming up with zero results and for Insync and only
getting 3 results (but that does prove my setup is actually working in some
fusion). At the time someone recommended leaving the search going for a
little while, these have been going for days.
I remember at the time someone saying you can get anything you want -
Bulgarian folk bands etc., obviously this isn't what I'm finding, what is
other people's experience?

(313) Aquatic EP

2005-09-08 Thread Lee Herrington
I admit it. I'm guilty. I couldn't help myself. It was only 10 dollars,
so I bought the much maligned boot of the Aquatic EP on BUZZ. To be honest,
the sound quality is not bad. Perhaps I got lucky this time. I would be
interested to hear a sample of a tune from the original BUZZ release vs. my
booted copy. I have heard that some original BUZZ pressings were not of the
best ilk. I do have an original copy of the panic in Detroit comp, and it
sounds sketchy at best. Anyone have any thoughts?

Alphabetize by label, and then sort each release within that label by

Well, I can still look up the name, so it's not a DNS problem. Whois at
internic shows everything in order. Other sites in their netblock are OK
(cdbaby.com for example). My guesses are:
1.) Servers are off-line for a move of some sort to a different facility.
Or the colocation place went out of business and shipped everyone's servers

back to them. This has happened to a few of my favorite sites recently.
2.) Discogs didn't pay the bandwidth bill and now they don't exist.

(313) long hot sexy nights.

2005-02-18 Thread lee herrington
Hey gang... can someone tell me what song is the primary sample for
moodymann's long hot sexy nights?

I'm listening to a theo parrish mix set right now and there's a track
playing with that familiar bassline from the above moodymann tune. I'm
assuming that I'm hearing the original track right now.

Cheers,

(313) detroit techno vehicle

2005-02-07 Thread lee herrington

i know there are some cleveland, ohio residents lurking on this list. i
have a question. does anyone know who drives a yellow ford suv with a large
detroit techno sticker on the back window? could this be the notorious
lance mcgannon? i used to see his posts on this list long ago. hit me off
list if you have any info. i don't have any shifty motives behind my query,
it's just highly unusual to see any public display of support for detroit
techno in lakewood, ohio.

my brother told me about a program on NPR yesterday, might have been U
of M's affiliate station, someone who interviewed a vinyl record
presser in detroit and a break dance club in detroit. anyone hear
these.. [paging Ian Malbon to the thread] and/or have links to the
program? I'll see what I can dig up too. sometimes they have audio
archives online.
