Re: [313] hiphop/idm
speaking of which, the new 12 on Throw (#1008, a white label) has a kinda hiphop/idm sounding track The last issue of URB (Bjork on the cover) also had a nice piece about the influence of Hip Hop (or 'bling bling) on IDM (guess you could say the influence of bling bling on blip bloop..hehe). They talk to Kid 606, Matmos and Cex on the topic. I was really happy to see this article, as the genre's influence on one another has been especially present recently (check out the new Dntel on Plug Research, some tracks also show this). It was refreshing to see it spoken about in URB. The article even touches on yet another white genre being influence by black music (the article praises Timbaland and the early productions of Dr.Tre to name a few). The issue also has a nice article by Tamara Palmer on Bjork, which concentrates on Bjork's musical background and the audiofile side of her personality. ttfn diana ps...gee...a feature on rich...hmmm..that's new.;) --- John Osselaer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I was just surfing around a bit and bounced on the site on Wire were I saw that Kid 606 is on this month's cover. i would say it was the Code Assault record but it doesn't say 'produced by the wizard' it say produced by code assault' so it's probably not it I recently found a few sealed copies of a record that gives the producer as the wizard, the tracks are called 'code structure', the year is 1989, and it's from detroit. is this jeff mills? can anybody point me to a mills discography? thanks james www.jbucknell.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313]The Wizard Record
have you opened one up to hear it yet? is it techno? that Code Assault 12 is from '89 and i think it was the only record Jeff did that year (inbetween the Final Cut records). the tracks have subtitles with Wizard in the title (i.e. Without Sin (the Wizards Institute Mix) etc) but the records say produced by code assault, not the wizard. that would be weird if there was some other techno record out in 89 produced by jeff, or someone else calling himself the wizard... what label is this 'code structure' record on? is it Code Assault? on Technika? He did a remix on that Detroit industrial record. -d I recently found a few sealed copies of a record that gives the producer as the wizard, the tracks are called 'code structure', the year is 1989, and it's from detroit. is this jeff mills? can anybody point me to a mills discography? thanks james www.jbucknell.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Please READ THIS Tribute to the United States]
here we go again this, also, can be found on many 'hoax' websites. this is a real story but was written 28 years ago...not this week. This is one email that is definately worth forwarding. I hope you all have a good afternoon. -dalton TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing. America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at . Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those. Re: [313] WTC - Nostrodamas prediction
exactly. the whole reason that canadian student wrote that passage was to show that vague random phrases could be construed as whatever people want to have it mean in their heads. in fact, there's some nostrodamas writing that also being passed around now saying that it predicted thisthis same phrase was used to supposedly predict the lockerbee crash years ago; people just fit these things into whatever context they have at the time. funny how so-called 'predictions' never predict anything until after an event has happened and people can read into it whatever they want. I agree with Hans. Nost's predisctions are so damn vague that this could be talking about anything. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, Back in the day Detroit had a largish punk scene. One of punks primary influences was Jamaican reggae dubb. Just had to bring it all back full circle. well, before Jamaicans started making their own music (before there was reggae and dub as genres) they used to just cover RB from the states, meaning they played covers of tracks on labels like Stax, King, Chess, Atlantic, and especially Motownjust had to bring it all back again full circle, haha - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Peacefrog label even has a compilation series called deletions [a collection of long out-of-print vinyl titles]. I caught an earful of shades of jae the other week. Intrigued, I attempted to locate a merchant or distributor that carried a copy. No luck. Perhaps the artists or labels do not feel there is enough demand to justify the cost of a second issue. Michael Kim: how about cutting down the number of bad releases instead? ;) well i was just kidding (notice the wink sign), but i'll continue this discussion for the hell of it... read on I think cutting down the number of releases would eventually be catastrophic for this music scene. Factories would have to close down their businesses when there wouldn't be enough work (records to make) and thus cause the pressing prices go higher and higher, making it useless to release this music on vinyl when at the end a record could cost you twice as much as it does now. Only the strongest pressing plants would survive, and eventually there'd be only 2 or 3 pressing plants IN THE WHOLE WORLD. Not much choice there. I think this effect is already showing the way average record price has been steadily rising in the last 15 years, and the amount of new dance releases per month should now be higher that ever? i think that's mostly due to inflation. i mean, nobody claims the reason for higher burger prices is due to mad cow disease, right? higher cost of operation, higher prices to the consumer. price of a Big Mac combo meal 15 years ago sure wasn't over $4. i also don't think it would be that big a deal. i'm no economics expert, so maybe my opinion isn't as valid as yours, but there are so many horrible records coming out and so few pressings of good ones in comparison. why not just make MORE copies of good records? i don't think you'll have problems selling reissues of classics, look how fast Cybotron - Clear went. okay, maybe it might take a little bit of creativity out of the equation if everybody has the same records, but i've seen horrible records sit in shelves for years. a pressing plant may be pressing it, but if nobody buys it, somebody's got to pay for that. also, look at how many Swedish imitation records come out. they sound the same, no new ideas, more than half of the Swedish sounding records are garbage. i mean, do these records really need to be released constantly? if you miss one, you can find twenty others the next week that sound just like it. on a big system, it's REALLY hard to differentiate between two tracks a lot of the time because they're so similar. (note: i'm not trying to say all Swedish techno sounds bad, a lot of it is quite good, but you all know the imitations i'm talking about) i really wish record pressing plants would concentrate on making more copies of good records, and reissuing good older records and classics that they KNOW will sell, rather than pressing the latest record that nobody will remember or care about two weeks after its release. because people who are relatively new to record buying, like me, can find the good stuff and buy the classics up on sight. It's a sort of Amazon jungle this dance music business; you have
Re: [313] rotterdam's duplex - heroes of detroit?!!!!
well, my favorite track on that Duplex EP5 would be 'motion blur'. if you like the sound of that track, too i'd recommend 'influence' by Electronome (HM-1202). last i knew it was still in print but if you can't find it around i'm sure klen at clone could probably hook you up. these tracks are only slightly related, the duplex one is a bit atmospheric sounding and has a little more electro-styled beat than the electronome which is more of an italo-electro beat. actually the more i think about it the more different they are from one another...oh well, i still recommend it, haha . is there anyone else out there making music (electro/techno - dance-floor orientated) at the moment similar in style to duplex (besides the 'better known' artists like john tejada, titonton duvante, fabrice lig, funk d'void - and ireland's great, great record label d1). - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] R: [313] rotterdam's duplex - heroes of detroit?!!!!
speaking of orgue electronic vs.legowelt if you haven't heard it you should definately pick up the Derrick In Nord Korea EP on Bunker. it is unbelievable, it's got 5 tracks on it and 4 of them are amazing; ranging from italian disco to dopplereffekt-like electro. they also have that great remix of Metal Disco on that picture disc which is great but sold out. though i believe it was recently licenced to be out on a Ghostly International (ann arbor, mi) compilation soon. all the names have been named but may i reccomend the orgue electronic vs. legowelt live on web.i-o-inc.com - hot sh**t!!! the real audio seems to be down but the mp3 stream is up - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

jeff stopped playing because the stations started requiring pre-approved playlists and it was too much hassle It has exacerbated the problem definitely, but urban radio in Detroit at least has been problematic for at least the last 15 years. Both the Wizard and Mojo lost their jobs because of the phenomenon the DHHC is talking about and this occurred way before the TeleCom act. peace lks - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

you know, just stations getting into more corporate mode and less of a freeform mode it wasn't specifically just for jeffs shows, everyone had to do it, but could you imagine jeff having to write out a playlist for every wizard set? and then having to get it approved? just too much trouble so he stopped jeff stopped playing because the stations started requiring pre-approved playlists and it was too much hassle Why did they require pre-approved playlists? Re: [313] New Hip Hop + New Soul?
happens to be detroit related too, haha! at 2:00 it's Jay Dee. an instrumental on the Phat Kat records #HSR001 good stuff - Original Message - From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 8:48 AM Subject: [313] New Hip Hop + New Soul? Alright, I used the s word :) I listened to the new set on Betalounge from 7/28 yesterday, with Don Shtone, Mannequin Lunge and Jan Jelinek. There's some straight hip hop with really nice lush beats in there. I'm way removed from the hip hop world these days. I'm curious about what some of it might be. If I'm tracking it down right, it's going on around the 2-hour mark and moves about from there for at least an hour. Is this a new, new school? This stuff segues from there into what I can only describe as slow electronic soul. It has sort of a heavilly electronic hip-hop flavor with beautiful vocals. All of this stuff interests me a lot and I have no idea where it comes from or what to call it. It's distinct from what I'm hearing out of the West London New School sound, although both evoke the same return to an older variety of soul or funk for me. More of a direct link up with that sound than what we'd normally think of from techno, but very techno in spirit. Sorry for being so vague and non-descript. These are the best words I can come up with to describe these sounds. I'm hearing a lot of these sounds on the betalounge these days. Beyond all of this, is anyone else noticing a really prominent focus on musicality versus minimalism in 2001? I feel like people are putting a lot more effort into writing music these days. It's really prominent in deep house, and seems to be infecting everything else. Re: [313] Lifefest--Hotels?
i can't suggest where to go, but i'd say stay away from the Ren Cen, the hotel doors there can sometimes be opened with credit cards/atm cards/etc. lots of break-ins during DEMF... - Original Message - From: Joe Szczepanek [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 9:11 AM Subject: [313] Lifefest--Hotels?
