Yea ' times up for another Speakeasy netcast on Psurkit.net

Also minlove.net .. is feeding out some fine glitch driven
house types sounds .. makes me feel like early Gemini stuff

From recent discussion around ' minimal ' scene killing reverb dubs
check .. kyoto-sound.com matching this pace space . similar

(313) I Love Techno in the Fall.

2003-09-25 Thread Lee Herrington IV

hi folks. well, the days are getting cooler and shorter here on the south
shore of lake erie. for whatever reason, this time of the year i find
myself spinning alot more techno... i can't help but put on model 500 or
early psyche trax. in the summer, all i want to hear is jazzy, deep,
soulful house. come the winter, i'm grabbing for more strand, duplex, keith
tucker EP's. does anyone else find that their musical tastes change with
the seasons?

  cheers,

summer lp - James Mason - Rhythm Of Life
winter 12's - Ultradyne, dynarec.

 change with the seasons?

Definitely! I always find myself heralding winter with It Is What It Is -
synthesized strings and crisp 909 hi-hats work so much better when it's cold
than they do during the summer, I find.

Over the summer it does seem to me that the music I listen to becomes a bit
more melodic and a bit more soulful in a lot of ways, which becomes less
desirable as the cold sets in and my tastes drift back into a more synthetic
and electronic mindset. Being originally from Glasgow, I kind of suspect that
if I still lived there then I'd listen to techno all year round, as it's during
the cold months that that music appeals most of me.

I have to admit, though, that the music I've been listening to the most in the
last week or so is early 1990s British techno! My bedroom floor is currently
covered in Black Dog, B12, Nuron, Stasis and Reload EPs, which all seem to go
quite well with the current climate...!

Before the MP3 era (and before my youngest son bless his heart wrecked my

the tinkle of the keys and the spare sounds of the drums would fit well
with the first snows.

Some hip-hop is DEFINITELY more appropriate for the summer for me. The

I'm not sure whether my dance music mood changes though. This is an

[313] I Love techno 6 review [LONG]

2001-11-29 Thread Dennis Donohue

I will start by stating that I've read in a few places that this was the

fifth installment, but I Distinctly remember the theme for I Love techno

2000 being 5 years 5 rooms and I even have a shirt from last year that

says that, so I'm going to refer to I Love Techno 2001 as the sixth
version.
My first impressions of this year's event were severe
disappointment,
and utter frustration - as the two MAIN reasons I came back to I love
techno
were opposite spectrum this year. One of the best things about last
year's
party (besides the amazing line-up) was the collection of people who
came to
see the talent, and the way that they appeared to be enjoying the music
much
more than coming just because its a huge party and they wanted to get
messed
up. This year's endeavor was a complete flip-flop, with extremely
messed up
people everywhere and lots of (American reminiscent) Candy-raver types
with
their glowsticks, plastic beads, and shiny clothes. Perhaps I just had
a
different view last year, or I managed to miss all the action, but I
didn't
pull that sort of reaction, and the people seemed to be there for
support,
rather than for drugs or anything else (albeit they still got down!).
The
second dissapointment was immediatley apparent and was the thing that
kept
reappearing all night - the organization and planning for all the people
was
poor. Last year, my wife and I left the Flanders Expo feeling like
there
were only 1500 people in there, when there were really 30,000+. The
lines
to get in last year were non-existant, the bathrooms took mere seconds
to
get into, the main room was only filled about 1/4 at any one time, - and
the
only time I felt like there were a ton of people in the place, was when
only
one superstar DJ was playing, and all of the people mobbed into one
room.
This year, they had awful planning, and I think it was partially because
the
organizers or promoters wanted to be really tight with the police or
governing authorities. Last year, the doors had somewhat lax security
and
no cattle lanes which kept the line moving at all times, and it took us
no
more than 5 minutes to get in and check our coats. For I Love Techno
2001,
it took us almost 2 hours to do the same thing, and they had
cumbersomely
placed movable barracades everywhere where there was a flock of people
(front door, coat check, bathrooms) which only made things horribly
worse.
Fortunately, I'm not going to wank on about how horrid this party was

compared to last year, and as a matter of fact, I'm going to tell you
how
itblew last year out of the water, in terms of Artist participation
(does
that make sense?) and overall feel. First, let me describe the size of
the
space. The Flanders Expo (at least the portioins they were using), has
a
gigantic Warehouse feel to it, with six enormous rooms flanked on to it
three on each side of the rectangular chill area which had no music in
it,
just concessions and merchandise - and a VIP entry area. The main area
was
much larger than any warehouse I have ever been in, let alone any rave
or
party I've ever attended. Each room that branched off, was easily the
largest party I'd ever attended being (in my sometimes distorted
perception)
at least larger than an american Football field for the people to dance
and
congregrate (but it felt like everyone in the building was dancing like
mad
- at all times, compared ot last year's crowd that [while severly
entertained] mainly just smiled and bopped their heads). Getting from
the
front of one room back into the main area, and then on to the front
(or
stage) area of another room took around 30 minutes at one point in the
evening - but was not too cumbersome that it was frustrating.

On to the talent -
I will try my best to explain what I was feeling objectively, but it's
very
hard to do so. There are so many things that go into a really good set
or
performance or even one of the rooms that they had built, and someone at
the
same party could have been in different rooms the entire time and
possibly
had a completely different experience than I had. That said, I didn't
travel to Europe to have a crappy night, and I was destined to have fun
-
but my expectations were shattered.

We arrived in time to catch Umek, but with the lines and coat check
taking 2
hours - completely missed his set (much to my dismay). We headed first
into
the yellow room (each of the five performance rooms were dubbed a
color,
and the sixth room was were the coat check, EMS and other functional
things
such as the exit vestibule were setup). When we entered, it seemd like
people were leaving, and Bandulu had just stopped playing a live song.
Bandulu (at least two of them - I'd heard that there were 3
originally???)
were just stopping in between songs, and we were able to catch 20 - 30
minutes of their set, which was really nice sounding - but the sound
quality
in that room wasn't the best. They played

[313] I love used record shopping

2001-08-02 Thread M Elliot-Knight
So Groovetech is having this big sale, right? Well, I was really strapped
for cash and decided to make some sacrafices in my CD collection and some
vinyl too. I managed to get a good load down to the big used record store
here in Minneapolis. While I was there I thought I'd look over their used
vinyl. I needed an emotional lift (considering my cat just came out of
surgery). I found a several old Relief records (bought Gene Farris' Erotic
World) and some other junk which I didn't keep. Now in this store there are
two seperate bins for 12 singles...I thought just as a last thing I'd check
the older stuff just to see if anything slipped passed everyone. About ten
records into the first row my eyes nearly dropped out of my head...I know my
jaw hit the floor. There before me was a name I never thought I'd see in

No one I think would contend that fact. No big corporations = no
cool-ass

festivals and no one want s that. However, the people controlling the
monies - the city of Detroit, Pop Culture Media/Carole Marvin and Ritual
Prods/Amir Daiza are benefitting the VERY most from a P.R. perspective
as
well as the multiple million(s) that I'm quite sure are stuffing the
city

 coffers to sponsor this event.

Yeah - that's defintely true. My point wasn't so much to applaud these
people unequivocally as to point out that at the moment, the sponsorship
doesn't seem to be running completely astray from the original intent.

Moreover, for each and every sponsor, I can guarantee that Ms. Marvin is
being broken off a %. Perhaps say, 10% of 1million over and above a
salary
or contract that the city is paying her. The DEMF merchandise, DEMF
documentary, etc. blahsay, blah is all going into Pop Culture's and the
 city's pockets.

Yes, and this would be true of whoever's organizing the festival, right?
I'm

pretty sure that's what you're saying below.

In exchange, we get to receive chump change as performance fees, even
though
we are the reason the money is coming in in the first place, and some
additional notoriety. However, Ms. Marvin is now considered the
resident
expert on our market and will be getting thtelion's share of any and
every

thing that comes as a result of our efforts.

Luck o' the draw, to be certain...but nonetheless without the talent
none

of
this conversation would matter. Fact remains, being the resident expert
means FAT LOOT which can and I'm sure will be diverted away from those
more
deserving...myself included (ahem) as well as scores of other
 electronic/maniac biz peeps/artists.

Right. Her primary skill is that she, the city and Carl Craig actually made
it happen, right? I can see the analogy here to the music industry in
general, where a major label gets most of the money because they control
the

media and have a stranglehold on the distribution networks. It's a pretty
similar situation, but in this case the underground artists are the core of
the effort, rather than major labels engineering talent to appease. So if
the money paid back to the artists has not gone up as more sponsorship
money

comes in, I can see why that would be a source for concern.

Please stand firm on this premise. Control is what is being sought
after

and long-term it will affect our income(s) if not seriously REGULATED by
the
 dance community.

I most definetly will not miss a wonderful weekend, but the local press
ALREADY knows whassup and its time for the community--ESPECIALLY the
artists
to give credit where credit is due--each and every time a microphone is
shoved in there face or yet another journalist is weighing their every
word.

If I'm reading right, I'm hearing that you think the event should be
controlled by those that have been in the scene the longest, and who have
the strongest involvement with talent, have for a long time and work at it
every day. I think this is a great idea, but at the same time, who was it
that actually made the first event happen from a promotional perspective?
I'm actually asking - because what I've read tells me it was Carol Marvin's
efforts - and if that's not true, I want to be set straight.

Understand that the machine ONLY knows Ms. Marvin as The Woman / The
Impetus
behind this powerful movement and festival. How much do y'all think
she'll

Might I say that Belguim is one of my favorite countries (out of the ones
I've seen) in Europe. So go, if ya got the dough and are looking for an
adventure. Try to take some time to see the city too.

colour bands).

BTW : I can even search for rooms and stuff ( I know a guy who has a Youth

Does any one know much about the I Love Techno Party in Gent, Belgium on
Nov 6th? It sounds great but I'm wondering if it's a little too good to
be true, It seems to have a good history as a party though... Any one
know much about it? A few of us are thinking of flying there from SF for
an extended weekend, Seems like it'd be a fun thing to tell my grandkids
about when I'm sixty :)
