(313) Narodniki - The laptop supergroup

2004-10-04 Thread Tosh Cooey

http://www.bartleby.com/65/na/narodnik.html

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but last Thursday was a performance by
Narodniki in Berlin, which this time consisted of (Left to Right):

http://www.c4.ca/narodniki.jpg

Richie Hawtin
Max Loderbauer (Sun Electric)
Luciano
Ricardo Villalobos
Monolake
Zip
Scion/Vainqueur/Substance
Cabane

All played on their laptops, un-synched, at a tempo of 120 BPM, with the
exception of Monolake who was the conductor, or better the controller, who used
the mixer to determine which artists were being mixed with which and how. Zip
and Ricardo also took a few moments to control.

The best way to describe it is free-form laptop jazz orchestrated by a
perfectionist.

You gotta love European arts subsidies.

I'm really hoping something similar happens at Mutek next year. Not even
necessarily all those same artists, even just the concept would be
interesting to watch unfold.

And when I showed that picture to my boyfriend, he said "That looks like
Hollywood Squares!".

Not sure if you were aware or not, but Narod Niki DID play at Mutek THIS last
year, so I'm sure that they'll probably be their next year. I've never
been to Mutek, but I'm getting the info from Ableton's site:
http://www.ableton.com/index.php?main=events&sub=narod_niki

"NAROD NIKI is a collaboration project founded by Ricardo Villalobos that
was presented for the first time at last year´s MUTEK Festival. The idea
of the project is to bring together a number of techno masterminds to do a
live jam, hiding their identities behind a collective alias to keep the
attention dedicated to the music"

...

"The exact lineup will, of course, remain secret. Even so, it should be
quite obvious that the list of artists at this event can be nothing but
long and extraordinary!!"

So, it wouldn't be the exact same line up, but something as good.

Now what I'd like to see personally is not a 20 guys standing behind
laptops. That's about as exciting as 1 Guy sitting behind a laptop.

I'd like to see 20 Skilled musicians/patchers with their Modulars and Step
Sequencers, and them just going at it. Patching like wildmen.

Wow, inspiring! that sounds amazing. Ive always
thought that these type of live performances would be
the future for electronic music. because like it or
not laptops, synths, and turn tables are instruments.
Or atleast have the capability of being used as such.
But, Im probably preaching to the choire here.

actually I'm pretty sure I mentioned this just before or just after it was
made public.

there will be a detroit date if I have anything to say about it (and I guess
I do, a little)

neat idea, but dont be fooled into thinking this is the first time this has
been done.

If you bounce around www.mutek.ca (i think if you hit the complete
archives link, then browse to narod niki) you can find a couple links
to audio streams. here is a direct link to the realaudio version. there
are two quicktime versions as well, which may or may not have been
fixed yet.

Was I the only one not feeling this set. I had listened to it before I
knew who the "Supergroup" were and couldn't finish listening to it. Then
after I learned it was comprised of some true superstars I listened to
it all the way through and Just couldn't get into it.
