(313) Sad News

2008-08-04 Thread Dan Bean
Rick Wilhite has closed his shop 'Vibes New And Rare Music' on 8 Mile.

As anyone who's been knows, it was a great spot and will be missed. Not just by
visitors but by Detroit DJs and house heads in general.

However, the number for the shop is still operational and Rick's talking about
doing mailorder so it's not quite the end of the story yet.

Subject: Sad news about an RS (rhythm society) Friend

Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I bear sad tidings to the community: RS
Friend Eric Tiedemann has died.

There has been no word yet, that I have heard, regarding cause of
death; to the best of my knowledge, he was found in his home, and an
investigation is ongoing. More details on that, along with funeral or
memorial arrangements, will be posted as they become known. I would
respectfully request that, in the meantime, we avoid speculating about
it on the lists.

Like me, Eric was sponsored by Karin Wertheim, and has been a friend
of ours since we all attended an NE-Raves net-party in Rochester, NY,
in 1997. It was that online electronic dance community that brought
all of us together before we slowly, each in turn, filtered our way
across the country and into the RS. Back in those days, we used to
call him Dances With Beverages, though my mother always referred to
him as Pajamas Eric, due to his fondness for the comfort of plaid
flannel dance-wear.

Eric was the first person Karin sponsored into the RS, and with me he
was co-heresiarch of the RS Peninsula Meditation Group from 2005 to
2006. He also served on the Tech Team, and co-lead Spiritual
Emergence and the Dance Ceremony for exPeRiEnce, the 2007 RS Retreat,
with Christine Benvenuto. Most recently, he led Bishops Desk for
Magic, and was kind enough to submit a copy of the Bishops Desk Binder
to the wiki so it no longer needs to be re-created for each event.

He was a man of wildly diverse interests: ecstatic dance, the
supremacy of breakbeat as a musical art form, Thelema, Buddhism, NLP,
Robert Anton Wilson, Robert Heinlein, David Deida, Nietzsche, computer
technology, entheogens, quantum theory...pure geekery of every sort,
kind, and manner, on which he could discourse at length, and in depth,
once you got him started.

Though I had lost track of him for a while after he moved from Philly
to Cali, upon reconnecting at Dance, my first ANDC in Fall'05, our
friendship resumed immediately as if the lacuna had never occurred. He
was that kind of guy; my confidant, my mentor. Eric was a true
friend, one of those without whose generous assistance on numerous
levels I could never have taken root here. He was my biggest fan,
encouraging and facilitating my DJing even when I thought I'd put that
well behind me. His presence will be dearly missed, and his physical
absence keenly and palpably felt.

Eric, I miss you; I love you.

RE: (313) Sad news: Club Tresor is Shut

2003-09-03 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Weird, I was just watching this show on cable this weekend about the
rebuilding of Potzdammer Platz and was telling my wife that the club was
slated to be sold or shut down some time soon and then made a comment that
we should visit before it does.
Haven't the authorities been trying to close Tresor for some time now
because it sits on property that has seen a *huge* increase in value?
Seems like they finally got their excuse.

MEK

Partly true Michael, but not the whole story. A big problem with the land at
Potzdammer is that it simply has seen no substantial maintenance since
before WWII! Remember, Tresor is the vault of a 1930s department store. The
land is contaminated, has antiquated utility services like sewerage,
electricity etc (when I was there in Nov 2001, there was a massive stagnant
mass of water near the Tresor club which I was told was quite normal,
yeuch!) not to mention being constructed with the use of some outmoded
materials like asbestos, to name one.

So you see, whilst the government has wanted to get hold of all the land at
Potzdammer and many other places in the East for most of the last decade,
the motivations are partly to regenerate the embarrassing shabbiness of the
capital city of a G7 country, and yes, partly to flog it off to some fat
cigar smoking bloke (stereotype alert!). The point is, in this case, my
feeling is, that without public (read govt) input, bringing the conditions
of the Tresor up to scratch would be impossible. Note: there's every chance
of Tresor re-opening (after some years of temporary residence) in the
original locale, after the devt work is done - the public works proposals
have some provision (read funding) for community and leisure facilities.

Hello everyone...

..I hope that's only temporary ... but who knows... :/

deep-z,

I don't even know where to start about last Saturday.

The Aphorism is a 4 man band from the south of Germany, and they have
 releases coming up on Framework.

They came up from Freiburg on Saturday to peform at Tresor.

When we showed up at the club for the sound check, there was water
 every
where. The club has low 10 ft ceilings, and they had some how set up
 one of
those out door umbrellas down there.

There was a leak. There was a table for them to set up on, and they
realized soon that there was a leak directly above this table. The
 one that
they were about to put thousands of dollars of electronic equipment
 on.

So the light guy on the sound guy were working on some way to keep
 the water
 off of them.

They found a large banner/tarp which had a picture of Juan Atkins,
 Derrick
Carter and Kevin Saunderson (These are famous techno folk for those
 of you
who don't know) and used it as a sort of umbrella with a couple of
 rods
 holding it up.

The process took about an hour, and it was quite rediculous to watch.

Eventually the guys started their live performance, at 2 am. It was
 going
pretty well, until the drum machine started acting funny because it
 had
gotten too much water on it.

The word was now spreading downstairs (there are two floors in
 Tresor) that
there was a bunch of police upstairs, and they were checking every
 one for
 drugs.

People stayed downstairs, and kept partying.

While I was watching them perform, a member of the crowd came up to
 me and
said something in German. Eventually he asked me who I am, I said,
 Bob
 Brown.

And he said... Bob Brown, no, really? You are not Bob Brown...

He stepped away, and came back: Really, you are Bob Brown? Prove
 it, so I
 showed him my driver's license.

He went over and got his friend, and I heard him saying Bob Brown is
 here!!!

Very very crazy, quite a trip really. He wanted me to sign his
 shirt, but I
 didn't have a marker.

I signed a sticker for him, and told him to sign up for the
 newsletter.

So then the cops came downstairs, and wanted identification from the
 band.
While they were performing. Crazy! The best part was, that the
 space
behind the table was very tight, and the police officer was trying to
squeeze through, and the band member (Markus) was dancing and rubbing
 his
ass all over her, while she tried to get buy. It was very funny.

Just after that happened, a leak let loose in the tarp above their
 heads,
and all this water poured down right where he was moving his mouse.
 Crazy,
they cleaned it up and put an empty glass under the leak...

The DJ who was supposed to go on after the band hadn't show up yet,
 so we
figured that he had gotten caught up in the Police mess upstairs.

The DJ who was on earlier played again, and soon enough the police
 shut down
the party downstairs. Ironically enough, he was playing a Bob Brown
 record
when they told him to shut it off. I figure that was the last straw
 for
them. They had heard enough crazy music, and that was beyond their
 limit.

The Police escorted every one out two by two, and gave each person a
thorough search, and then take their information down.

When I got outside I realized that there were about 300 police
 involved in
this operation. They had flood lights, and enough paddy wagons to
 take all
600 people that were at the club to jail.

The Police ended only found 28 people with drugs.

The whole thing was very strange.

The club is closed for further review. Unreal! Tresor is closed.

Let us hope that my record won't be the last one played in Tresor.

I will be posting some pictures and video of the night on the
 Framework
 website.

I am in Freiburg, with the Aphorism. I am 20 minutes from
 Switzerland, and
30 minutes from France. How about that.

Sort of a half vacation, will be going to the black forest, and the
 Largest
 European theme park.

I am cooking the guys dinner tomorrow night. Roasted Chickens,
 Mashed Sweet
Potatoes and Some type of Green. I would do Collards, but I don't
 think I
will find em over here. I will probably go with Swiss Chard, some
 beans and
 Greens

I will talk to you all soon...

I am sure I will have another story after this weekend. I am
 playing here
in Freiburg on Friday, and then in Stuttgart on Saturday night.

 Bye bye.

 Bob.

Stereolab's Mary Hansen Dead at 36

Ryan Schreiber reports: Mary Hansen, singer and guitarist for the
experimental pop group Stereolab, died on Monday after being struck by a
car while riding her bicycle in London. Martin Pike, co-owner of
Stereolab's Duophonic Super 45's imprint with Tim Gane and Laetitia
Sadier, was extremely saddened by the loss when we spoke with him via
telephone this morning. It's incredibly tragic, said Pike. We're all
going to miss her. It's just a bit too soon. Even though it happened on
Monday, all of us only [recently] found out. We're all still very numbed
by it all. The band's official statement reads: The suddenness of her
death has shocked the band. Mary was a special person. Our thoughts are
with her family and friends who will miss her greatly.

Hansen, originally from near Brisbane, Australia, joined Stereolab in 1992
after the release of Peng!. She also contributed vocals to bands such as
Moonshake and The Wolfhounds, and made appearances on releases by Mouse on
Mars, Brokeback, and the High Llamas, whose Sean O'Hagan has been
responsible for brass and string arrangements on many a Stereolab LP. Mary
Hansen was 36.

Dammit this is horrible. Stereolab is one of the most 'techno' bands I can
think of, even when they don't use electronics, especially in recent years.
I feel extremely lucky to have seen them play live while she was with us. It
was one of the best (and 'livest') performances I've ever seen. Listening to
their music helps some, but those la la la's and h's don't sound 1/2
as sweet as they're supposed to.

People who don't know much about them can (and should) find out more here:

About the only thing of much consolence to me right now is the lyrics to my
