May 8th, 2010

[KONTROL] presents:

"From The Beginning...To The End"

an evening with

::: DANIEL BELL :::

(Accellerate, 7th City, Tresor, Perlon // Berlin)

* 9 HOUR DJ SET
* Exclusive SF Appearance
* 360 Degree Sound
* 150 People

___

Greetings once again, friends and music lovers.

In late 2008, after playing for [KONTROL] four times between 2005 and 2007,
Dan Bell approached me and told me he had an idea for a long-format special
event in which he was the only DJ all night. Knowing this would truly be one
for the history books, we secured SF's most amazing intimate private
location, and it was on. After promising an 8 hour set in which he was the
"opener, headliner, and closer", Dan delivered what was, without a doubt,
one of the most memorable nights of music I have ever been witness to in
well over a decade of steady partying. Flawless long mixes, incredible
unheard gems both old and new, and a deep, sophisticated vibe that has
rarely (if ever) since been replicated. At 7am, when he was scheduled to
end, Dan asked if he could play one more hour, as he still had some great
music he'd like to get to before calling it a day. He did. And many of us
stayed to the very end. And through nearly 9 hours of mixing, he never lost
his focus, never even stopped to use the bathroom! To this day, when people
ask me about my favorite parties ever, this one immeditately jumps to mind,
and I suspect I'm far from alone in feeling this way.

After an unsuccessful attempt at having Dan back to play 222 Hyde last
November (he was very ill and had to cancel), at long last we are bringing
this dance music legend back to San Francisco for another super-rare,
super-special, super-extended session.

And this time he's playing nine, count 'em, NINE HOURS.

Trust us, you really don't wanna miss this. We hope to see you next
Saturday. :)

---> Greg Bird and the [KONTROL] Crew

usually when i have seen him, he plays a good bit of house. this past
time, there was none of that. it might have been more interesting for
those not into house, but i love house music ;)

Dan Bell made an appearance on my radio show this past January.
Unfortunately, I couldn't keep the set up for very long because I ran out of
bandwidth. Now that I've got more capacity, I have re-posted it again only
it is now at 96k. The original was 64k so sound quality should be a bit
improved this time around.

I forgot to change the ID settings after I spliced the 2 recorded halves of
the show back together.

mid-90's, he produced several records on his own as DBX

phenomenal. Dan really loves subTonic and asked to come
back. How could we possibly refuse?

Cabanne is a shadowy figure from the French minimal techno
scene who we do not know much about. We do know his music,
and that's enough for us. He has released some
excellent 12"s, including collaborations with Dan Bell,
Ark, and John Thomas. He was also part of the first Narod
Niki experiment, a live collaboration with Dan Bell, Richie
Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Akufen, Dimbiman and others at
the Mutek festival in 2003. This is a very rare North
American appearance.

DANIEL BELL
(7th City, Logistic Records, Telegraph, Tresor // Detroit)

Born in Sacramento, California, Daniel Bell grew up outside of Toronto,
Canada, and then moved to Detroit where he collaborated with Richie Hawtin
as Cybersonik for three years on Plus 8 Records. In 1991, he started his own
label, Accelerate, on which he released his influential releases as DBX.
Based on nearby Chicago "track" records, he reduced that sound further into
funky, streamlined grooves. The formula proved to be successful and helped
launch a new aesthetic in techno and house music known as "minimal".

With the overwhelming success of his "Losing Control" single in 1994, Daniel
set up 7th City Distribution in order to assist smaller Midwest labels to
get distribution in overseas markets. He also created three new labels - 7th
City, Elevate and Harmonie Park. In 2000, he relocated to Berlin, Germany,
and released his first mix CD, The Button-Down Mind of Daniel Bell, on
Tresor Records. He since has produced a series of remixes for a diverse
range of artists, includng John Tejada, Pantytec, Akufen and John Thomas. He
currently has a DJ residency at Robert Johnson in Frankfurt.

On this note, it should be mentioned that this is in an intimate venue, and
that the Outlet Collective's DJ's will turn it out in their own right, as
they always do. Also, please note it is ticket only. This is not just a
promotional ploy. People will not be allowed to pay at the door, even if the
party does not fill to capacity - something to do with the venue. Who knows,
they may find a way around this, but at this time there is absolutely no
guarantee of that. At any rate, this is not one to sleep on because the
venue is not huge, the interest is high and the ticket is cheap. These guys
took a huge chance on this gig, so please come support. Mr. Bell has not
graced this island that often in recent years, so you know it's your best
shot to see him soon.

Also, those who might think of seeing Francois K instead, I agree this is a
gutting choice, but take note that August 2nd is the beginning of his new
bi-monthly Deep Space residency at Plastic People. You will get to see him
again much sooner than DBX, and this is cheaper!

Sorry for the spam - just a quick reminder for any Glasgow/UK people on the
list who might not know: me and Laurence Hughes are hosting a very rare UK
performance from Daniel Bell on Saturday night.

But due to our usual venue (the Unit) becoming unavailable, we've had to
relocate to Club 69. If anyone wants more info, drop me a mail...

The 12" in question is by Jim Ingram. I believe the EP is called 'Vision to

This sample is on a Shake record on 7th City... I believe it's SCD #8 (Tracks
for My Father) ? Incredible track on an equally stunning EP. I think the
sample is on the track "Travelers" or perhaps "Roaming" ? All in all this
record is Shake in top form, essential.

havent heard this new dan bell mix. although id like to comment on other
tracks.
deck the house Afuken is the best track hes ever made. better than anything
hes ever done on perlon.
virtuoso Rolando mix. amazing. very minimal. clean saunderson bassline
with synths and these "hick-up" sounds.

the new floorplan on duet is hood at his best.
the new Recloose is dope. aint chaingin is going to blow the f... up
still waiting on the new transmat and m600

peace out

Erm, most of the purpose maker tracks have a 727 in there You
can't sue because of some Toms, There is still legal sampling guys.
Taking a small snif of a track doesn't turn you into a bastard. I
still have not heard Winks track but if he did the same thing as with

This just in:

The kind folks at Submerge were contacted this morning concerning a post on
their web site forum concerning Josh. Someone at Ovum threatened them with
a

defamation of character suit due to a not so nice post about Josh on their
forum. They were asked to remove the post from their site. This character
also told the forum admin that they are going to sue Dan Bell for
defamation

as well.I wish this was a joke

hmmm, i wonder if Jockey Slut might be interested in running a piece about
this whole story in their news section? i imagine none of the parties
involved would mind, especially not Ovum... it's not like it'd be bad
publicity.

I'm not really surprised by any of this. My legal backgrund is (thankfully!)
a distant memory now, so I'm not up on the latest case law, but I do know
that you need to tread carefully with this kind of thing.
That's kind if what I was getting at yesterday. IMO, Dan Bell has a strong
case to sue for copyright infringement over the "Superfreak" track and
that's what he should have done. I can understand that he feels bitter about
a sequence of events with Josh Wink and feels that he's been ripped of in
the past, but the fact is that comparisons of other tracks like "Don't
laugh" with "Losing Control" simply would not stand up in court.
What's happening now is that other people are putting themselves in a
compromising postion, legally, by hosting potentially defamatory comments
and copyrighted material on their severs in an attempy to support Dan, and
it sounds like Ovum are getting ready to strike the first (legal) blow. I
just really think he's gone about this the wrong way...

Sean.

Dan helped me out in a jam. He came in and filled in for John Kelley at one
of my parties a little over two years ago. I felt kind of bad asking him in
to fill in at the last minute but he did it and had know problem with doing
it. I also think because I'm good friends with John Tajada and he was also
playing that night, that kind of work to my advantage as well. I was very
impressed with his set that night

RE: [313] dan bell - in the park

2002-02-21 Thread Hodgson I, Sean (S.R.)
Dan helped me out in a jam. He came in and filled in for John Kelley at one of
my parties a little over two years ago. I felt kind of bad asking him in to
fill in at the last minute but he did it and had know problem with doing it. I
also think because I'm good friends with John Tajada and he was also playing
that night, that kind of work to my advantage as well. I was very impressed
with his set that night

RE: [313] dan bell - in the park

2002-02-21 Thread Grammenos, Peter

I agree, I saw Dan Bell at last year DEMF for the 7th city after party. He
showed up at around 5:30am when most of the crowd had gone and dropped some
relly soulful records.. I lost it when he dropped shake's 'detroit state of
mind'.

Humorous Error

Dan bell formerly of what band? (I think they mean mark bell)

Fri. Sept 8: DO NOT MISS THIS; Very special guest, one of the
great pioneers of electronic music, Dan Bell (formerly of "LFO", Warp)
will be on exhibit along with John Tejada (pallette) and Trichome (ELM).
This will be a very rare experience so don't fall asleep on it.
