2005-06-18 Thread lists
name: JP Remillard - aka Pheek

age: 32

I live in: Montreal, Canada

I was born in: Canada

Into Detroit since: Since I heard Good life in 89 (88?) and stuff like
French Kiss. All the acid house from the late 80's.

Into electronic music since: I was into early hip hop and electronics in the
early 80's.

Starting point on the techno map: Basic Channel... yay.

Favorite Live act: Orb, in 93. Frank Bretschneider, 2000 @ Mutek.

Turning point: seeing Plastikman do a whole very minimal set in 98 in
Montreal. I reckon this was the starting point of the minimal scene of our
town. From Akufen to Deadbeat, we were all there, going crazy, preparing our
actual sounds...

One day as I came home early from work ... I saw a guy jogging naked.
I said to the guy ... 'Hey buddy, why are you doing that?' He said,

(313) re: Subject: Larry Heard Track ID

2003-08-26 Thread David Hampson
I recognise this from the description and I'm sure its something I have - my
first thought was that it could possibly be a Black Lodge 7 which is based on
a track on the Dumbo soundtrack (I think the title is Pink Elephants on
Parade but someone may correct me) - its in old recycled 7 pop sleeves
stamped with a black bull shape... but I'm starting to think its something
else now...

You may still get the Black Lodge 7 from Piccadilly records - even if its not
the same track I think you will like this one!

David

Towards the end of Larry Heard's set on Friday, he played this track which
intros like (for lack of a better term) evil cartoon music. It's got
alternating down and offbeat bassoon, and maybe clarinet, in a boomp baamp
booomp baaamp boomp baamp bomp bamp [repeat] fashion (imagine
weeble-wobbles, but with knee-less legs, marching up a hill in procession
swaying back and forth, quickly). It then busts out into this full-on cut-up
big band sample with a few lyrics, the only one that stuck in my mind was
crazy. I suspect it may even be a white label remix of Brian Setzer
Orchestra or something. It is really cool and I want it. Know what it is?

(313) RE: Subject: Shops in Sheffield

2003-05-28 Thread David Hampson
I went up there digging for records a couple of years back and had quite an
interesting run - mainly because I got speaking to a guy in a record shop in
this Afflecks'y shopping arcade and he said he had a few thousand records
upstairs he hadn't got anywhere to put them out; I persuaded him to let me look
through them and ended up with several crates of 12s at £1 each - a lot of
stuff which probably hadn't seen the light of day for 5 or 6 years :) I think
that place was upstairs in The Forum but I wouldn't guarantee it. There was
also a drum and bass shop downstairs there with a good selection... That was on
the end of a street which seemed to be the main street with record stores on it
which I believe was Devonshire street. You also have down there a record shop
in the back of a girls clothing shop (small selection of new dance releases
leaning towards funk reissues and IDM-type stuff);
old-hippy-who-only-knows-about-rock-music-except-the-orb-as-it-is-in-the-price-guide
run secondhand record shop with a small selection of crappy dance records
overpriced; big independent shop with a lot of cheap vinyl on the second floor
(think it might be Fop); plus a few more stores... I checked a few other
places throughout Sheffield but there was nothing significant except one place
on the other side of the city whose name escapes me! You'd probably find it
most rewarding to stay on that one street...

There's also a place called Polar Bear which I have bought quite a bit from by
mail order over the last year or so... No idea where it is but they get some
quality secondhand stuff in!

I found this on the net which may help http://www.knowhere.co.uk/518_music.html

Subject: (313) re: Subject: cleaning records

Best thing is to be very careful with them so you don't ever have to clean
them! Here is what I do:

I find light dust or finger marks you can get off with a silicone impregnated
cloth (you can get these from some good vinyl stores and many bad ones too).
If you have heavy dust rinse or soak in cold water first (to remove particles
that may scratch the surface), stand upright to leave to dry then use your
silicone cloth again to wipe. Remember to avoid getting water on the label!

If there is more than just dust and light fingermarks you can either use
isopropyl alcohol (you can buy this from chemists or buy it from record stores
at higher prices in bottles marked record cleaner) but I personally use the
cheaper method of water plus washing up liquid - spray on, leave for a minute
then use a soft cloth to clean, then rinse or soak in cold water until there
are no more suds then stand upright and allow to dry.

If it is very very dirty (food stains, ingrained dust etc) first spray on a
heavy soap solution to allow ingrained dust to be dissolved or to float out of
the grooves, rinse and then clean again.

I've seen the staff in Reckless Records in London using lighter fuel to clean
records but I'm not 100% sure whether or not this is good for your records - I
personally would not put it near my records! However it is very very useful
for taking off those annoying price stickers which tend to destroy your
sleeves when you try to remove them - simply spray the label until it is
soaked and leave it until the fuel has just evaporated, then the sticker will
come off easily (if it doesn't give it another coat and it should come off
easier next time) (note - if you are removing many labels in a non-ventilated
room it may do some good to have some ambient music available)... Top tip 2 -
you can also use the lighter fuel to regenerate your marker pens - simply
spray into the pen tip, put lid back on and leave overnight and it doubles the
life of the marker pen, thus saving you the cost of the tin of fuel :)

RE: (313) re: Subject: cleaning records

2003-03-05 Thread David Hampson
Never really thought about that - I 'll switch to using distilled water from
now on! It would probably be beneficial to also switch from washing up liquid
(which I know contains a bit more than just soap) to a milder soap, though I'm
sure hand soaps have other additives... anyone with any ideas here?

As for the GruveGlide and Disc Doctor has anyone experimented with it and
really got significantly better results? It seems quite a high initial outlay
(especially with Disc Doctor) and I've never bought a brand new record before
and thought that sounds like the record is really dirty! like they seem to
imply! Perhaps I need to replace my Technics 1200 decks with something more
audiophile!?!

2003-03-04 Thread David Hampson

However it is very very useful
for taking off those annoying price stickers which tend to destroy your sleeves
when you try to remove them - simply spray the label until it is soaked and
leave it until the fuel has just evaporated, then the sticker will come off
easily (if it doesn't give it another coat and it should come off easier next
time) (note - if you are removing many labels in a non-ventilated room it may
do some good to have some ambient music available)... Top tip 2 - you can also
use the lighter fuel to regenerate your marker pens - simply spray into the pen
tip, put lid back on and leave overnight and it doubles the life of the marker
pen, thus saving you the cost of the tin of fuel :)

I believe the Dogon of Mali annually traced the movements of Sirius B
through a ritualistic dance. Did so for hundreds of years if I remember
correctly. Sirius B was only able to be seen by modern tech in the late
fifties. I think they stopped the dance a few years back because of the
growth of Islam in the region.

agree. Nobody does, but everybody does. In modern music, everything is
techno. It's all made on machines with machines. Techno records sell, but

I had to learn that just because some people have just discovered this
music, you(I) can't get mad at their inexperience, but you point them in the

For the guy who wants a comprehensive music history on Detroit musics.
Start with some John Lee Hooker and find out about Hastings street. Pick up
the book Before Motown to find out about Detroits jazz history before
motown. Anything about Motown.
Before it became the job of profressional amateur experts to classify,
name, and seperate everything to justify listening to anything, it was just
dance (listening) music. All of it. FM 98 had a mix show with a Barry
Michealton Grant I think. The Wizard started at WDRQ 93 FM, before he moved
to 98. Mojo played his mixes on his radio show on WGPR 107.5. And this scene
was not a techno scene until after 1990. As well as Duane Bradley doing his
afternoon mixes on 98. Claude Young had his mix show on WHYT 96. So by the
time the mix shows had came about on 89X, they had already been running on

I will admit my bias towards Detroit techno, as opposed to techno.

I've noticed that a good number of producers tend to look down their noses

If one looks under ghetto tech, it lists that style as the

based in detroit. I like the choice Ishkur uses for the
background sample... DJ Assault's Ass n' Titties. Detroit
city music at its best for sure! How come there isnt more

Just found this site, and laughed my bloody head off.
http://ishkur.com/features/music/guide.htm
I especially like the description of techno: Techno is the
depressing, gritty dystopian genre. But what it lacks in
soul, it more than makes up in purity of sound and a
mythology so romantic it can't possibly figure out what to
do with itself.

I also like how Detroit techno stems from Classic techno,
and how the bangin' techno eg:jeff mills - the bells
formed out of tribal techno eg: Peace division - feels my drums

Check out the description for tribal techno: This goes hand
in hand with trance alot. The goal is the same: to get the
people naked and dancing under the stars. So who wouldn't
be up for a little tribal action.

I've got Subject Detroit Vol 2 mix cd but where the hell can you get no 1
from. Can't seem to find it anywhere. Help, i need a copy cos vol 2 is
ace.

Saw DJ Bone @ Atomic jam at the weekend, and he was rather good, made a
nice
change from the usual bangin techno dj's they normally have.
His set was suprisingly similar to his mix cd which was no bad thing.
Next month normal service resumes with Dave Clarke, DJ Rush, Trevor
 Rockcliffe.

would that be DJ Bone by any chance?? i know his 2 mix CD's are called

Saturdays for now, and eventually Tuesdays (or so I've been told). They also
plan to broadcast from all three rooms, although I'm not sure if this will
take place immediately.
