My take on steve bug (oh yeah, HI LIST! Been off for awhile):

Dessous (his label) WAS one of the more forward thinking deep
house/techno labels not afraid to cross lines stylistically and take a
few risks at the deeper end ('99-2001 ish). Then they got caught in the
acid/electro/house/uktech-haas loop and the releases got pretty samey.
Head up arse. Some occasional good stuff in between the crud though.

Steve as producer also used to get into my head as he always had an
affinity for really round solid bass and melodic synth and string lines
that are just right up my alley. Then he started taking notes from
others coughjohn dahlbackcough and his personal stuff followed in
the vein of his label. He got lost in a definition of sound and hasn't
made it out yet.

Steve as a dj. Always spot on when it comes to making you really feel
the good stuff. He's one of the few left with such a high profile that I
can tell still wants to connect with the crowd and push them to their
limits whether he's going deep or spastic or wonky. Love him on the
decks. Smooth.

Just my take.

I like his stuff, need to be in the mood but yeah - I can gladly
listen all day. He played Sheffield not so long ago and part of the
contract was 4 extra bass-bins, the air-con being turned off and enough
liquid to keep the smoke machine going all night on full blast!!

He's also got some funky mixes on Raw Elements called Minimal Funk. There's a
R. Hawtin Robotman track on there, as well as Woody McBride, Bug himself, and
others.

[313] steve bug last night at times square

2002-08-24 Thread Jeffrey Paul

anyone else go? i think i bumped into a few listmembers...

i was rather disappointed with the sound at 'the new times square'. i
would've expected better at a paxahau-promoted show (i know it's not their
sound, but still, you'd think they'd have a hand in where their production
would take place)... the sound there was woefully inadequate. lots of
'club people' and such, unlike most of the places i've gone to see good
techno; lots of 18-24 well-dressed clubbing as a social activity
potential stereotype applications walking around.

icky sound, lots of overdressed sluts, kinda expensive admission ($15),
and a huge raised dj booth making it impossible to spot the ones i didn't
know out of the tons of excellent tracks he played over the course of the
night contributed to me having a generally bad impression of a club i'd
never been to before. it kind of stood as an ironic contrast against
an absolutely amazing dj/producer i'd never seen before.

even with all the negatives, i still thoroughly enjoyed myself. there
needs to be more great, clean, simple minimal stuff like this in the
world. w00t!

Greetings all,

Steve Bug. I'm having trouble finding mixes of this most excellent of
artists. I'm also not going to beg the Paxahau guys for hi-quality versions
of their stuff (already been on my knees, practically - to no avail).

Any online locations people can point me to? Skip the peer-to-peer - the
corporate FW has me strapped.

Any help is appreciated!

He spun a 2hr set here in Toronto last Thursday (Valentines Day). It wasn't
what I was expecting since some of the tracks I heard from him were way more
on the tehno tip than what he spun in tdot. His set was really housey, and
if I expected to be listening to a house set, I would have been more into
into.

I still think he is a good Dj and a great producer from what I have heard. I
would love to hear him spin a more techno set. How was his set on Monday
night?

His set was not what i was expecting at all. He played all over the place
and never dropped any decent techno. Mostly house, db, idm, ... I'll stick
to just buying his records ;)

On his behalf though, i was told he had just flown in and hadn't slept for a
while nor eaten. He kept asking for food!
