Re: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED]/flame bait?
While in principle I agree with everyone, here's somthing to think about: 808/909 are part of the basic sounds, the canon if you will, that techno is created with. Classical music used the same general instrumentation for 300 years, Jazz for almost 100, rock for 50, and edm for the past 15. if all of techno shifted from using the punchy well-balanced kick to something different, i think we would loose a part of that classic sound/emotion. anyway... :)

Smelled great to me! Surprisingly, it was not packed at all and took me less than 5 minutes to get up to him and get Metropolis and Live @ Liquid Room signed. Seemed like a very nice guy. Also, for those interested, my friend asked him if there where plans to re-release Metropolis with his soundtrack. His response was that he is planing to go into the studio in the next month or so and it will eventually be released on DVD in 5.1 DTS. -Original Message- From: Daniel E [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2001 4:03 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED] Is it just me or does this smell funny? daniel Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 10:45:09 -0500 To: 313 313@hyperreal.org From: ani [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: jeff mills @ rt roseville - spam Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] hi everyone, just a reminder that jeff mills will be at record time roseville at 5 pm today (2-28) to meet customers and give autographs. we will be giving away free tickets to jeff mills' performance at the state theater to some lucky customers. we also have lots of axis and purpose maker restocks. ani record time [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.recordtime.com ph 810.775.1550 fax 810.775.5830 icq# 33610265 want to be on the record time mailing list? send an email message from the address you want to subscribe with subscribe in the subject - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED]/flame bait?
pardon me for possibly sounding moronic or a non-gear head...BUT why is it so many people strive to have the equipment or know the equipment of supah DJs like Mills, May etc? Why want to be like or sound like them? One reason why I fell in love with electronic music is because it was filled with sounds I never had heard before. If current producers want to sound like one another doesn't that just produce stagnation in the field? Isn't it better to find out how (insert name here) made the name by toying around rather than them just giving you the answer so your own flavor is given? That's one reason why I fell backwards when I heard Rotar for the first time-b/c it was diff't and left field from any other track I heard at the time. Rich, Gianelli, Mills, May they are all followed because they did stuff in the past with out people giving them answers. It was unique and fresh. If we keep chasing equipment answers does that mean unique and fresh will eventually evaporate? Icons and pedestals are for pop music. ok, flame me now. Oh.please.flame.me. diana __ Do You Yahoo!? At the same time, it's necessary to find gear that will allow you the flexibility to do what you want, and sometimes I think people are curious about acclaimed producer's gear because they like the direction of a sound rather than wanting to emulate it. And you need to start somewhere. Most innovators don't start out by making things in leftfield. You typically need to learn the basics of what's been done then deviate accordingly. If you simply try to make something different without putting in the time to learn the established technique it won't usually work. I'm the prime example. ;) Consider yourself flamed. Re: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED]/flame bait?
Very true statement Diana, Techno was about taking an idea and expanding on it and never looking back. Creating a new sound and letting the energy and excitment which surrounded techno be expressed in the music. A lot of tracks were probably produced on a Sunday after a good night of music and partying. Techno has come to the point now that the Major equipment producers are making gear which is geared towars a certain sound which the consumer might be after, alas the groovebox. I think that the generic sounds of techno have all been used to death now and good tracks using these sound rely on different rhythms or baselines. The most innovative tracks are using sampled sounds, this is how producers come up with their own sound. Now that techno has come out of the clubs and undergrouind and into the street I think we should look to the street to provide the sounds. I agree, i only asked mills because I have always been fascinated with that specific sound he use's, but that type of filtering and layer of certain effects could really help me out in experimenting with other sounds and creating new pieces of music for myself...Im just gaining more knowledge. hahaha ouch! tristan watkins wrote: For the most part I agree. Re: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED]/flame bait?
I agree with Sean, I just wanted to gain some more knowledge. With all the equipment out there, it's hard to tell what's flexible and what's not, except by asking anyone and everyone and getting their opinions. You can only spend so much time at Guitar Center playing on a machine before they kick you out :) I actually try to get stuff that people don't own so I can try to get my own sound/style molded. But in the end, it's the person that makes the music, not the gear. Kevin --- Hodgson, S. R. Re: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED]/flame bait?
Buy old stuff. Especially old Yamaha and Roland gear. I buy stuff that has sounds that I like, or will allow me to create those sounds. Take a look at my gear list on my site - http://www.geocities.com/labwerx Kevin Conrad [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 03/01/2001 03:53:26 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org cc: Subject: Re: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED]/flame bait? I agree with Sean, I just wanted to gain some more knowledge. With all the equipment out there, it's hard to tell what's flexible and what's not, except by asking anyone and everyone and getting their opinions. You can only spend so much time at Guitar Center playing on a machine before they kick you out :) I actually try to get stuff that people don't own so I can try to get my own sound/style molded. But in the end, it's the person that makes the music, not the gear. Kevin --- Hodgson, S. R. Why do what's been done? At the same time, it's necessary to find gear that will allow you the flexibility to do what you want, and sometimes I think people are curious about acclaimed producer's gear because they like the direction of a sound rather than wanting to emulate it. And you need to start somewhere. Most innovators don't start out by making things in leftfield. You typically need to learn the basics of what's been done then deviate accordingly. If you simply try to make something different without putting in the time to learn the established technique it won't usually work. I'm the prime example. ;) Consider yourself flamed.
