[Giles Dickerson [EMAIL PROTECTED]] And I'm speaking as someone who's been in the strategic marketing business for almost 7 years, why create such a negative stir about an event that makes its profit from people's enjoyment? If they are a promotion or event management firm, how could they be so ( delete expletive here ) naive as to send out these kind of negative concepts into the minds of the public a week before their precious show? Which, incidentally is so valuable to them that they are announcing the dismissal of their creative director a week before the show? I have one answer and I've seen it before : Big ego's and short sightedness. there another answer, and it's probably an even more siniter one: they're going after a target audience that they know will not only not care about the carl situation, but will never even hear about it. given the number and placement of advertisements for this year's festival, i think it's safe to say that they have their sights set on a much bigger fish than the techno scene, or even the serious dance music/electronic music community as a whole. i can pretty much guarantee that the vast majority of people who hear about this on mtv, fox or (for chicago people) q101, b96 and gci, have never heard of carl craig and will never know how things went down between the organizers. how much do you know about the beginnings of and the relationships between the people who organized lollapalooza, for example? i'm not blaming any individuals for this, and i don't know much about the way the festival was/is/will be run... but i can pretty much guarantee that to whatever extent large corporate interests (read: ford and others) have an interest this, that is the degree to which they will seek to appeal to the largest and richest possible audience, even to the direct disenfranchisement of the actual music community. m -- matt hellige [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://matt.immute.net - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[matt hellige [EMAIL PROTECTED]] how much do you know about the beginnings of and the relationships between the people who organized lollapalooza, for example? I know that, much like DEMF, it was started by somebody who was part of the underground music scene and had good knowledge of what music to put on the lineup (Perry Farrell). A few years later, Perry was gone and Metallica was headlining. It seems that the formula for every major festival has been to get some artist to be the figurehead for it (Perry for Lollapalooza, Ozzy for Ozzfest, Sarah McLachlan for Lilith Fair, etc.) -- :: atomly :: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.atomly.com/ | 877.741.3571 - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Notably, two of their sponsors are Miller Lite and Jim Beam, with Nextel being the closest thing to a corporate giant. South By Southwest is pretty unique in every respect though. I wonder, does anyone recall if it was perverted at all when grunge took off? Stomp will be performing via ISDN because it's too expensive to bring their entire dance studio on tour. [313] off topic DEMF comment.
Here's my two cents as an elitist writer ... not that posting to 313 (i.e. preaching to the choir) will make a difference. I can't say I'm surprised at the Craig/Marvin situation. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Do you all remember when Chicago had so much more drama than Detroit? Welcome to the big leagues, folks. I *am* a bit surprised and quite a bit disgusted at Ms. Marvin's timing. Of course I understand that there were probably some very specific reasons why she did what she did *when* she did. Whatever the reasons, I seriously doubt the festival will find someone with the same kind of ear and AR instincts as Carl. Yes, there are several people right here in town that would be good, but given that from here on out we'll have creative input by committee, I don't think we'll ever get to find out. Creativity by committee may be good for business, but it won't make for a great festival. I'll be there this year, but next year doesn't look promising. -d - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
