this is amazing thanks for the heads up, never even knew about this release! https://linktr.ee/dancurtinmusic From: kent williams Sent: Saturday, February 10, 2024 3:24 To: Tristan Watkins Cc: 313 <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: Re: Amp Fiddler album For me there's something that I hear as Detroit in music: it's honest and openly emotional, it makes a direct appeal to your senses and your heart. Marvin Gaye, Moodymann, Amp Fiddler are embedded in a tradition. Make something excellent and if you can't quite do that, make people feel something. Re: Amp Fiddler album
I get a lot of P-Funk from it as well. I think he played with them at one point maybe? As you say, lots of obvious nods to Motown, but seamlesslessly blended with what is very recognisably “him”. Re: Amp Fiddler album
"The One" is such a fantastic representation of Detroit music. Detroit music attracted me by the way that unique musical environment produces such original, heartfelt music. The very conscious use of 1970s musical tropes in a new century to say something new. And there's an unbroken chain going back to the 1950s and beyond. People who were involved with Motown were still around as guys like Amp came along. For me there's something that I hear as Detroit in music: it's honest and openly emotional, it makes a direct appeal to your senses and your heart. Marvin Gaye, Moodymann, Amp Fiddler are embedded in a tradition. Make something excellent and if you can't quite do that, make people feel something. Amp Fiddler album
I'm don't think I mentioned this here when Amp Fiddler passed, but I recently got this album, The One, with Will Sessions. Just had it on again. Some of his best music here. Seven Mile is especially attention grabbing (Moodymann shared a clip of this track on Instagram, which is how I found out I'd slept on this), but the whole album is really nice. https://willsessions.bandcamp.com/album/the-one RIP

some classic tales in there like the realisation that he *did* know Moodyman and the stolen J-Dilla zips story oh, forgot to ask, what is this story?? is it good gossip? come on, I'm bored. The Dilla story? OK, paraphrased cos you asked so nicely: Amp hooks up young Dilla with his first MPC and lessons on how to use it. Also introduces him to Q-Tip, kickstarting a path to beatmaking superstardom. Dilla owes Amp a favour and promises to work on an album if Amp ever makes one. Amp starts to make album but Dilla is too busy to help. And then... Some kid who works in a Detroit barbershop asks Amp to produce a demo. Says he bought 10 zips from a dude for $100 and if Amp produces his demo he can keep 'em. Later when checking out the zips Amp recognises them as Dilla beats. Calls Dilla and says I've got all your zips! Whassup?. Dilla explains that someone broke into his house and stole some zips and tells Amp You can have 'em. But wait, there's more! Amp chooses a beat and makes it into the title track of Waltz Of The Ghetto Fly. All along he's thinking I know this track from somewhere, I've heard it before. A buddy comes by and says, Yeah I know that track, it's from Q-Tip's Amplified album!. Coincidently, one of Amp's companies is called Amplified. Hear the Dilla/Q-Tip joint: http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/usrm/191/33 4191_1_06.ram?obj=v11016 Hear the Dilla/Amp twist (guitar by John Arnold): http://www.groovedis.com/lp/ampfiddler/waltz/b2.ram Ta da! By the way, a few months ago in Hiroshima I found a second hand 7 by Mr Fiddler of, you guessed it, Waltz Of The Ghetto Fly which was released by a French major about a decade ago. Has anyone checked Amp's old Mr Fiddler album from circa 1990/91? It's often available dirt cheap on Ebay. Andy

The Dilla story? OK, paraphrased cos you asked so nicely: WOW. Now *that* is a story! Ta da! By the way, a few months ago in Hiroshima I found a second hand 7 by Mr Fiddler of, you guessed it, Waltz Of The Ghetto Fly which was released by a French major about a decade ago. So this was just an earlier version of that song then? Has anyone checked Amp's old Mr Fiddler album from circa 1990/91? It's often available dirt cheap on Ebay. I was tasked with finding it in a Detroit record store at the last DEMF, but alas, I did not set foot in one. Some time thereafter, the Mancunian seeker found it on mp3, and said it was *OK*. I really wanna hear 'Waltz of the Ghetto Fly' immediately though. For those who are unclear on it, I believe it's not actually out until February or March, but promo copies started flying around stores and actual recipients in the last couple of weeks. Have yet to hear a negative report. Tom, I am coming to Pittsburgh to steal your copy. I leave in 3 hours. ;) Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Wait up, is that the new Ghetto Fly album??? its brilliant. really great soul music just cant be beat. the mix of superficial is different from the 12 mixes, and i think its different from the mix on that carl craig mix cd on react as well. anyway, its good sh*t, i highly reccomend it. new alton miller on track mode is decent too, not as good as the mahogani obviously, but good nonetheless. tom -- RIP jbible andythepooh.com

its brilliant. really great soul music just cant be beat. Seconded. Plenty of audio samples over at http://www.groovedis.com/lp/ampfiddler/waltz/waltz.asp the mix of superficial is different from the 12 mixes Isn't this new mix the (second) one Theo used on Contemporhythms? I finally got round to watching the Amp interview from the Red Bull Music Academy the other day... some classic tales in there like the realisation that he *did* know Moodyman and the stolen J-Dilla zips story. That Red Bull conference is fabulous but they need better media coverage of it. They could exploit it so much better. I know people would like to read about it. Here they sent a writer for a surf mag to cover it last year!
