Ordering Records On-Line

2001-04-13 Thread nathan goode
Hi peeps

Can someone give me some advice for buying records online, ie - which
stores should i but from? i've bought from submerge before, but was
wondering about other stores like groovetech, recordtime, sonic groove.

i've seen listened to plenty of records from the groovetech site that
i want to buy. how long does it take to receive the records once
ordering how are they with postage?

are there any other sites i should try?

any help will be greatly appreciated.

cheers

2001-04-13 Thread Kyle J Dupuy

the only store i've had good results with is groovetech. i've gotten
about 49 out of 50 records i've ordered from them, and the longest it has
taken is four days from the date of my order. i tried sonic groove once
and they took two weeks from the date of my order to even send the records
out; i got 4 of 8 i ordered. sonic groove took a week to ship my order
and i got 2 out of 8 records i ordered. i tried smallfish (uk) once.
when i placed my order they had two (very hard to find) copies of 'acid
lp,' one of which i happily put in my cart. they sent me an order
confirmation and told me the records would ship the next day. after 3
weeks went by i e-mailed them to see what the hell was going on. they had
lost my order, and, of course, 'acid lp' was long gone by this time. doh!
(by the way, anyone have a spare copy?)
 so anyway, i recommend groovetech.

Groovetech is my favorite place. The records you see
online are usually in stock, and it only takes 4 or 5
days to get them.
I'd stay away from Sonic Groove. They never update
their catalog so a lot of their stuff is not in stock,
and they're super slow. I once ordered 13 records,
and got 2 in the mail about a month later.
  Satellite records (www.satelliterecords.com) is
pretty good because they update their site with new
releases every week. It usually takes about 2 weeks
for an order to be received.
Also try www.611records.com. Their catalog tends to
be little out of date, but not as bad as Sonic
Groove's. My experience has been about 1.5-2 weeks
for delivery.
I just stick to Groovetech for the most part, and
fall back on 611 or Satellite if I'm looking for
something a little older that Groovetech doesn't have.

PlanetX is ALMOST as good as Groovetech. They send orders out in a couple
of days, but Groovetech is as far as I know the ONLY online record store
that tells you before you buy whether something's in stock.

PlanetX requires a $40 minimum to ship a vinyl-only order, and if it falls
below that, it gets cancelled.

I'm checking Tresor's new online shop. They sell sweatshirts in addition
to their record catalog.

satellite is a good spot to listen to records, but the database that drives
the site breaks all the time so ordering can be flaky and down right
frustrating.

give bent crayon a try, they email a weekly release list that you can skim.
they used to let you pre order records in some cases, i fell off the wagon
for a bit so i'm not sure if they still do that. always got what i ordered
from them.

Re: [313] Ordering Records On-Line

2001-04-13 Thread Phonopsia
If you're looking for that personal touch, I must speak up for my boys at
the Record Collector in Iowa City: http://www.recordcollectorinc.com I've
been shopping there since I was in high school and the electronic music was
a few used Orb promo CDs for $4 [what the hell is this???], a My Life With
the Thrill Kill Cult cassette, and about 1 row of dance vinyl. This place is
responsible for the direction my life has taken - including love of house,
techno and financial ruin. Presently, they have a relatively new website
that may be a surprise to you if you haven't visited them in a while.

At any rate, you'll find a bunch of older stuff, a great selection of
non-electronic music if that's your thing, an exceedingly courteous and
helpful staff and quite possibly a few records you won't find anywhere else.
Most of the Detroit DJs who have passed through town have been unable to
avoid the inertial nexus of this sordid villa, usually escaping with most of
their earnings converted to vinyl (perhaps I'm exagerating a bit). :)
Anyway, give 'em a shot. You won't be dissapointed. In the unlikely event
you're ever in town while TP's spinning you may even catch an in-store
performance. He has treated Iowa City very well over the years - home of his
only US residency outside of Detroit.

Hi
Groovetech is not the only great shop
Did anyone check Nuloop.com, the availabilty on site is very precise, as
Groovetech
You have samples of each track of the vinyl and I always get additionnal
plastic covers
on each record I ordered. I know they ship worldwide and their shipping is
quite fast
it took 2 days in France. I think they offer a great service and of course
dgreat records.
Have anyone tried it too?

Re: [313] Ordering Records On-Line

2001-04-13 Thread Jonny McIntosh
I buy stuff online all the time, here's my preferences/dislikes:

www.hardwax.com - Excellent, especially for new European stuff. And they'll
send you their wee catalogues each month.

www.formic.com - Really vast stocks of old and harder to find stuff, kept up
to date and shipped quickly. Recommended.

www.submerge.com - they're not answering emails now, though they are in the
midst of massive overhauls. Obviously a place to try for 313 stuff.

www.recordtime.com - the obvious place to try while submerge isn't in
operation, in fact, last time I had word from submerge they said to give
them a shot. Their database is a bit hit and miss, sometimes stuff is
stocked and sometimes it isn't. Thay can be a bit slack with answering
emails, too - are you reading Ani? :)

www.recordcollectorinc.com - I've only tried them the once, but I'd
definitely keep them in mind. Very friendly etc.

www.bentcrayon.com - Judging by their database, these guys look like a
veritable Aladdin's cave - they aren't, I've had about a 10% fill rate from
them. I no longer bother trying.

www.juno.com - fast as f**k, but then, they're in the same city as me. Best
for recent releases, too.

www.vinylunderground.force9.co.uk - really friendly, great for classics and
newer stuff.

www.htfr.com - quite lazy about checking their orders, I think - I often
don't get any reply. Some of their prices are a bit steep, too. Though they
are handy if you want to check the spec of mixers etc.

www.mveshops.co.uk - umm, this is where I work, and orders placed here are
often handled by me. The website's vastly over priced, as a rule, and
features a tiny amount of the stock we actually have. Not really recommended
for 313, even if I do say so myself ;)

www.danceclassics.com - I tried to get the sonar 123 compilation of these
guys recently (thanks again for the tip Armin) but they didn't have it in
stock - anyone have it for sale? Or just the Sunlight Infiniti 12 on
Peacefrog? Can't comment beyond that, but they have tons of classics at
really ridiculously inflated prices.

I'm sure I have missed out tons of others. Anyone wanting to buy second hand
jazz, disco etc... well, that's another story entirely.

Jonny.

I just ordered 23 records from www.NuLoop.com and they were very friendly in
answering my questions. They told me it would take 2 weeks to get me my
records. 6 days and counting lets just see if they make it here on time or
not.

Erm, checking that, it should be www.danceclassics.co.uk, though the dot com
guys do look like they rock, I doubt they'd be of much help when tracking
down those retroactive originals...

Actually, I messed up the URLs quite a bit there, so the following are the
corrections:

www.formic.de
www.juno.co.uk
www.danceclassics.co.uk

i hate to recommend them b/c their site is kludgy and their service sucks,
but http://www.htfr.co.uk/ sometimes gets some good stuff. they're a big
shop in the uk who sell equipment and used records. they put their entire
catalogue online, so if you've got something you're desperate for and check
often you can sometimes find what you're after. i managed to get most of the
early plus 8 and probe catalogues that i was missing there over the course
of a few months last year, although for some records i paid a premium. their
online customer service is non-existent - you're lucky to get a confirm
email - but they do occasionally get some great stuff in. i JUST missed
getting a copy of UR's revolution for change LP a few months ago; somebody
beat me to the punch.
