Considering I just got the exact same message, and the headers show it as

just checked), it's probably someone at m-nus who forgot to turn off his

The headers on the mail also match those given by the server, so I doubt
it's forged. It's more in line with that annoying flavorpill autoreply.

as far as FS goes...

FS is the thing that makes DJs able to forego the work of building a
collection through blood, sweat, tears, and loot. And in as much as that
process winnows out (to a certain extent) people who aren't that serious
about DJing as a craft, Theo thinks (according to my reading of the
interview) that something very very important is being lost.

He's right...but also wrong.

People ARE now able to just take an entire record collection, or even
recreate an entire record collection with a tiny fraction of the effort
previously required. And some of those people are no doubt doing it just
because they can. And their art suffers for it. Speaking technically,
you learn something about the craft of DJing from blending two tracks BY
HAND that you don't necessarily get by tweaking a couple of BPM knobs.

BUT at the same time when the means of production is opened up to the
public and made democratic think about what you gain. You gain access to
all of the tracks that previously needed a 19th level Wizard to find. You
gain more time to develop your craft because you don't have to go sifting
through bins. Through the process of competition and cooperation, better
DJing results from the increased interaction of all those cats who are
spinning now. With the means of production widely distributed you now
have the ability to use found sounds in a much richer fashion. I've been
toying with the idea of taping my lectures and then using them as
background for my mixes...something that would have been very difficult
just five years ago.

So Theo is channeling Wynton Marsalis here, against an invisible Herbie
Hancock.

He's got some points...but I guess where you stand on them is very much
related to what you think about democracy and art.

Dust will be creating a similar forum, and the Overload archives will remain
(other than the forum - it will be gone), but the site itself is not going
to continue to produce content. Ali, Woody and the other contributors are
moving on. Dust will be cool, but Overload will be missed. It was pretty
definitive of underground culture here for me and many others (especially in
London) in the last year (more than that for others who have been here
longer).

Re: (313) TLA Overload

2002-11-02 Thread Anya Stang
DAF the older band... you mean Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft?
Founding members in 1978 were Robert Görl, Gabi Delgado-Lopez,
Kurt Dahlke, Michael Kemner and Wolfgang Spelmans. They started
using synthesizers as well as guitars etc. The man at the synth was
Kurt Dahlke, who is perhaps better known as the Pyrolater of the band
Der Plan.
First DAF record 1979 iirc, titled Produkt der Deutsch-Amerikanischen-
Freundschaft, was purely instrumental. The 2nd one, Die Kleinen und
die Bösen (The Small and the Evil) was actually produced in Conny
Planck's studio, and sounded very experimental and avant-garde.
Dahlke had left the band by this time and Chrislo Haas was the new man
at the synth, but he soon founded Liasions Dangereuses with Ex-Mania
D.-band member Beate Bartel. Then D.A.F. shrunk to their final cast,
Gabi (voc), Robert (dr) and their machines The German lyrics were
very provocative.
When Für Immer (For Ever) came out, D.A.F. had already disbanded, to
the surprise of the fans, and their label Virgin, who wanted to bring
D.A.F. to the US. That this didn't happen probably prevented them to
sink into insignificance but so they still have a kind of cult status.
With their mix of pounding rhythms and minimal sequences they influenced
later styles like EBM and Techno, and bands like Front 242, Laibach and
Nitzer Ebb. They never felt to be part of the what was called the Neue
Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) but they were marketed under this logo.
In fact you could say D.A.F. showed NDW the way...
That's all my brain can come up with right now... don't know the other
2 tla's you were asking about...
Cheers,

Anya

extremely hard to run an underground magazine and Overload has to give in to
the financial pressure.

They will continue on the web however and they are looking for people's
tracks for their downloadsection.

So get surfin' now

Overload 7.0 is out

2001-04-05 Thread Tom Robbins
Biggedy-biggedy-bong! Hear ye, hear ye. The new issue of Overload is now
released and will be filtering into the better record shops worldwide over
the next few weeks.

Issue 7.0 features interviews with Andrew Weatherall, DJ Rolando, Si Begg,
Andrea Parker, Colin McBean and Bogdan Raczynski, plus loadsa reviews,
books, and of course some thought-provoking article/mindless rants [delete
as applicable] on subjects like music money, media injustice and, well,
f**k knows what Stelfox is on about this time. It's also worth pointing out
that, as ever, Overload is free!

I haven't looked to see if they've uploaded this issue to the site, but the
URL is www.overloadmedia.co.uk anyway.

That is all. Dis_missed!

Overload issue 6.0

2001-02-06 Thread Tom Robbins
Is it me or is the 313 server particularly slow today? I posted something
this morning and it still hasn't come through. And it didn't even contain
any swearing! Anyway...

The new issue of UK techno mag Overload hits the shops this week and next,
so keep an eye out. It contains interviews with Robert Hood (by 313's own
John Ossaeler), Richie Hawtin, Photek and Gilles Peterson, plus some other
serious and not-so-serious stuff. And what's more, it's free!

Distribution is by Integrale Muzique, Infectious Metropolis in the UK and
by Neuton in Germany. The mag's site is at www.overloadmedia.co.uk

Overload

2000-06-09 Thread Charles Prince
Check this. Rumour has it that the Magic Feet people are behind this one.
A compact overview of the UR/Sony battle by Nick Craddock here, as well.

Speaking of Oli Ho, there's this interesting interview
on this free UK fanzine called Overload...My office
mail server is down, so I do not have the URL on top
of my head...anyways...he sez smthng like for new
wave of producers such as himself, classics like
Strings Of Life holds little meaning as he wasn't even
into Techno back in those days...

I will try to post the URL later, hopefully the online
issue carries the interview, there're lots of other
interesting things Oli said there as well...

The fanzine also carries interviews with Jamie
Anderson, The Advent etc. etc. nice work.

(313) Overload Media

2000-03-06 Thread Nick Craddock

G'day folks.

The first issue of Overload:Media - the new UK based fanzine, is in the
shops now. Featuring interviews with Ben Sims and Surgeon, a feature on the
ongoing UR vs Sony copyright infringement issue, and contributions from the
old Magic Feet gang, it's a damn good read and it costs absolutely nish,
nada, nuffink.

Keep your eyes peeled for it.

Hopefully there should be some global distribution to come, but I don't have
any details on that at present I'm afraid.

Cheers for the bandwidth.
