I got this one (Modern Love 001) on Saturday, and it fairly blinding, the lead track is a real peak-time uplifting electro affair, whilst the other tracks are by turns funky, inventive, and scary. I've been following the Conner brothers' ouput ever since I was introduced to them via the Signal label. On Signal they have released three 12s, two as Bitstream and one as The Monsters From ID. I did hear one of theirs which wasn't all that (orange label, can't remember) but I definitely think these guys are one to watch. Apologies if they've already been discussed. The orange labeled one is on Pylon, their own label, the release is named Retreat Pod. Besides the Modern Love release (Radiotherapy), there is a 7 on City Centre Offices as well, Crab Nebula. They have also appeared on Groovetech's Groovetechnology 1.3 compilation with the track Monolith. I heartily recommend everyone to check them out, absolutely blinding. lets not get acid house confused with the genre acid jazz. I rember first hearing about acid jazz back in 1989, The Crazy Frenchmen - Jazz It Up comes to mind as an early 90's acid jazz track.

as a matter of fact, acid jazz has no link to acid house. back in 87-89 acid house was popular and the nu jazz sound was more towards the soul II soul and talkin loud sound of beefed up rb/soul style. i think, in order to make ppl understand and categorize music what they have done was to coin the term acid jazz to make ppl think that its diff. than your regular jazz trax and has more of a club feel. Brand New Heavies, Galliano, Incognito, Banderas, Urban Poets, His Emperors New Clothes, Ronny Jordan and the like had a similar sound. And there were three main labels pushing this sound, and one was named Acid Jazz, the othe two being Talkin Loud and MoWax. Funny enough its very rare that a typical acid machine like 303 was used in any track defined as Acid Jazz. my 2 cents:) Mehmet - Original Message - From: spw [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2003 2:46 PM Subject: Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!) lets not get acid house confused with the genre acid jazz. I remember and own that CF record. I imagine it would sound awfull now. What that record with 'We are the warriors, We come to rock you' . Sort of electro ish. And What happened to the Hard Rock Soul Movement ? I loved the UK 'electro soul' sound back in the day... -Original Message- From: spw [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 08 April 2003 12:47 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!) lets not get acid house confused with the genre acid jazz. Wasn't 'Acid Jazz' just a label for jazzy sounds played by Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay etc in the chill out rooms in clubs playing Acid. as a matter of fact, acid jazz has no link to acid house Er...wow...sorry for being so stupid ;-)
Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!)
and this is how allmusic describes acid house The style of dance that exploded American house music around the world, Acid House first appeared in the mid-'80s in the work of Chicago producers like DJ Pierre, Adonis, Farley Jackmaster Funk, and Phuture (the latter of whom coined the term in their classic single, Acid Trax). Mixing elements of the house music that was already up and running in Chicago (as well as New York) with the squelchy sounds and deep bassline of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer, acid house was strictly a Chicago phenomenon until stacks of singles began to cross the Atlantic, arriving in the hands of eager young Brits. The sound jelled in small warehouse parties held in London in 1986-87, and then went overground during 1988's infamous Summer of Love, when thousands of clubgoers traveled to the hinterlands for the massive events later known as raves. Acid house hit the British pop charts quite quickly, with M/A/R/R/S, S'Express, and Technotronic landing huge hits before the dawn of the '90s. By that time, the acid house phenomenon had largely passed in England and was replaced by rave music. New-school U.S. producers from Cajmere to Armand Van Helden to Felix Da Housecat kept the sound alive and well during the '90s. thats why i said acid jazz and acid house have nothing in common apart from being a sub genre of electronic music and having the Acid in front of them:) mehmet
RE: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!)
Mo Wax weren't really pushing Acid Jazz - they arrived as Acid Jazz was dying on its arse - they were primarily instrumental hip-hop - (trip-hop - though I hate the term) There IS a link to Acid House cos both terms referred to a scene where lots of young people were coming together and un-selfconsciously getting down in dirty clubs and warehouses. House was eventually referred to as Acid House, so the Jazzheads parried by referring to their scene as Acid Jazz. -Original Message- From: Mehmet Koryurek [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2003 12:51 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!) as a matter of fact, acid jazz has no link to acid house. back in 87-89 acid house was popular and the nu jazz sound was more towards the soul II soul and talkin loud sound of beefed up rb/soul style. i think, in order to make ppl understand and categorize music what they have done was to coin the term acid jazz to make ppl think that its diff. than your regular jazz trax and has more of a club feel. Oh and everything touched by Erik van de Broek with a 303 in it of course okay i am going to stop this now :)) Was that the guy who did Shiver? Yep... What's hap'nin with him now?? Well they stopped releasing on Shiver and Dap somewhere in the midninties. Erik released some drum 'n bass as Scattah and did some pop-electro thing which sounded okay but not anywhere on the same level as the Shiver and Dap stuff. Rumour goes that he still has a box of about 40 DAT tapes with material which makes the shiver and dap stuff sound like shania twain on the techno tip. Last thing i heard is that he now tries to make some money by doing some trance stuff... Interesting. I hope he releases some of this material, it would be a shame to let it die on DAT. Subsonic Soundscape is a brilliant record. It's one of a subgenre of electro which segues from boom-bap into 4/4, really effectively...(I feel another thread coming on...;-) How collectible are his releases? I never see them in shops, seems like everyone who has them wants to keep them! Thanks for the update, Andrew

I find that hard to believe if his DAT material was really that good then why resort to creating trance to make money? I bought Subsonic Soundscapes from SG when it first came out and gave it away only to come across another copy some years later and passed on it. The stuff on Shiver is a little overrated in my opinion although I can see why it has huge appeal. on 4/8/03 10:01 AM, Andrew at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh and everything touched by Erik van de Broek with a 303 in it of course okay i am going to stop this now :)) Was that the guy who did Shiver? -Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 08 April 2003 15:32 House was eventually referred to as Acid House, so the Jazzheads parried by referring to their scene as Acid Jazz. I'm sure that the acid prefix was a semi-ironic jibe about the fact that, back then, everyone seemed to be sticking the word acid in front of everything to make it sound cool and current... there was no link at all between the two, and as far as I'm aware a lot of people in the Acid jazz scene were very sceptical towards house full stop, acid or no acid.
