RE: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie
If they really wanted a big recognisable UK name to be represented on the movie then Dave Clarke would actually have been the better bet maybe. Stu Remember, the title of the film is 'Hi Tech Soul' therefore, rightly or wrongly, some talented people are going to be excluded from that rubric, and on the other hand some people who aren't particularly stand-out, might be included. It makes me realise though that in the UK, we don't really have a direct equivalent of 'Hi-Tech' soul musicians ... I mean, at a stretch you could include UK garage (but would you really want to?!?! ;-) I can think of a few people I'd include. Obviously the most credible would seem to be A Guy Called Gerald. Also perhaps Hope Grant. But such folk are few and far between. Another one is Tony Thorpe. But most of you just said 'who' to that, didn't you? As someone else suggested, perhaps Cox simply knows more influential people! In marketing terms I'd think the words would be wider choice, bigger appeal - in more ways than one. I don't actually mind him being used as it means more people will probably get switched on to the special stuff. Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie
Well I knew Carl back when he was selling rave tickets from his flat in Brighton and heard him out often (It was hard to miss him in the late 80s early 90s) and I dont remember him once ever truly blowing me away. Sure he would do the whole 6 deck mixing thing and he was definatly one of the more competent mixers on the rave scene back then, but I always felt his track selection, whatever genre he was playing, was just too obvious and uninspired. Its as if he always had ambitions to be a radio friendly figure and always played the 'big' tunes. I dunno, maybe I'm being harsh, but I just feel as both an artist and a DJ he has always left me cold. Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie
If they really wanted a big recognizable UK name to be represented on the movie then Dave Clarke would actually have been the better bet maybe. not from an American perspective - they're probably trying to attract a wider audience and Dave Clarke just doesn't have the recognition here in the US that Carl Cox has. Carl tours the US quite frequently while Dave, I think, refuses to come over here at all. More people would be attracted to the film with Carl's name on it - fans of progressive house, trance, techno, etc. They know who he is. Dave Clarke would get blank stares and a shoulder shrug (in the US). I'm sure they're trying to attract a wide audience to the film instead of the thirty or so of us who chat on a regular basis on this list and know the difference between Craig and Cox. what would be interesting is to see a film featuring all the people that used to be on almost every record - Marc Kinchen, Santonio Echols, etc. get all the people in who built the sound - Shake, Terrence Parker, Kelli Hand, D Wynn, maybe a tribute to Laura?, etc. good to see that Blake Baxter and Thomas Barnett are in it. so Jeff Mills is the Electrifying Mojo then? ;) MEK [EMAIL PROTECTED] et To 03/22/05 04:19 PM Martin Dust [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc robin [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org Subject Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie the obvious one is hawtin. i guess there's a lot of back drama about that one. there was also no one from the ur camp (if i recall) On Tue, 22 Mar 2005, Martin Dust wrote: Who IYO is missing? - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: robin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2005 9:27 PM Subject: Re: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie saw it a month ago. much more professional than i thought. a little lopsided. a few key players missin, but def the best attempt at this subject so far.
