Last time I was there they had no new inventory of any kind; seemed like they
had batches of the same tracks int he bins. They mentioned that they were
hurting when I asked about anything recent being stocked. They referred me to
Detroit Threads. I think they would have been better off keeping the Ferndale
location, instead of the Roseville. Sad, but not surprising.

Yet another casualty of the shrinking record business, Record Time — a Metro
Detroit institution for 27 years — will sell its final piece of vinyl early
next
year.

Owner Mike Himes said today he'll be shutting the doors of the store's
Roseville
location in March, at the latest. He cites years of declining record revenues —
record sales were cut in half over the last decade — as well as a massive
overhead he can't keep up with any longer.

"I've known this day would come, I was hoping we could just ride it out, but
we're not able to do so any longer," said Himes. "I've been purely in survival
mode for about the last three years, and it hasn't been fun, really. It's taken
its toll. We can't stay open just to stay open anymore."

The first Record Time opened in 1983 and held various locations in East Detroit
before settling in its current location in 1996. Branches were opened in
Rochester and Ferndale though both eventually felt the pinch of declining
record
sales. When the Ferndale store closed in 2007, Himes said at the time, "the
crystal ball doesn't look so sunny."

Record Time's Roseville location covers 8,500 square feet and has a large
selection of used vinyl recordings, as well as a heavy presence of electronic
records. In recent years, Himes changed his business model to focus "98
percent"
on used products, but that presented its own set of problems: If they didn't
have something used, they didn't have it at all, which led to store regulars
buying product elsewhere. "We weren't able to give customers what they wanted,"
he said.

Record Time will stay open through the holidays and will participate in a Black
Friday event sponsored by Record Store Day, which offers exclusive releases for
independent record store retailers. After that, he plans to liquidate the
store's product, and will probably toast the store's long history by hosting
in-store events with bands and DJs.

Down the road, Himes says he's looking into the possibility of opening another
store, but doesn't have any concrete plans. "We could survive in a smaller
spot," he says. "There's still a good niche for what we do."

Chris Flanagan, owner of Street Corner Music, moved his store from Beverly
Hills
to a smaller location in Oak Park in 2009. He says Record Time still has a
shot.

"I think the days of huge record stores, square footage wise, are pretty much
over. You just can't have that playground anymore," he says. "But it's really
hard to kill off a name. Even if (Record Time) dropped out and came up again
six
months later, it would probably still have a chance.

"There are people that are going to be looking for you for a long time to come,
and if things improve around here, (Himes) might have another chance to open
his
store back up."

If he thinks they could survive in a smaller spot, then why close the
store completely instead of trimming some merchandise and moving to a
smaller space?

This is very sad news indeed :((

Lots of 60s, 70s, and 80s rock/pop
their electronic music records are of the Tangerine Dream, Tomita, Klaus

decent prices though

RE: (313) Record Time ...The Truth

2005-10-11 Thread Fred Heutte
That's a good note from Mike Himes. The fact remains
that Huck is out of a job, although he probably wouldn't
have liked standing behind a cash register or restocking
the main floor all day.

What Himes says about the changing nature of the business
is very true. Last week the headlines were all about Steve Jobs
dictating to the record industry what their new business model
will be. They don't like it one little bit and nothing is for
certain, because the industry has 100 years of whatever it takes
(and I mean that) to keep near total control of the creative
output of musicians. But that is the way it is.

What Mike Himes, Huckaby, Vince and all you who have worked
in the fast-diminishing world of retail record stores have is intimate
knowledge of where the good stuff is. That doesn't need four
walls and a bunch of display racks, and it's very valuable. Ebay
is one place where that knowledge goes, podcasting is another,
and there are a lot more opportunities going forward.

I'm not worried about vinyl because the truth is, despite all its
drawbacks, it has vitality as a performance medium. The "death
of vinyl" at the end of the 1980s was the rise of dance music
culture as vinyl changed from mass market to performance medium
and allowed very small runs of 500 to 5000 to dominate, opening
up the market radically to new sonic ideas. The digital revolution
that began right at the same time has been dominated by the
digital rights lockup of the industry and the RIAA, and they have
killed the retail record stores moving from vinyl to CD and now
DVD with their greedy and narrow-minded approach. Of course
they will try and dominate the electronic digital media as well
(sorry, Steve Jobs ain't *my* friend, his tussle with the industry
is a competition among sharks), but there is an opening for many
new business models, some of which will at last treat the creative
and performing musician with some fairness. Submerge and many
others selling on the net is one such but not the only model.

Record Time was always an anomaly, if you ask me. What
other full-service retail store during the last 15 years had a
full size dance music room like in Roseville or a fully committed
electronic music staff like Ferndale? Ameba in San Francisco
has the latter but they have never even had listening stations
which is the other essential part of the retail business model for
dance music. And I can't think of any others. From Gramaphone
to Eightball and Vinyl Mania in New York to Tweekin and BPM
in San Francisco to the late lamented 12 Inch Dance Records in
DC, the stores I've always found to be the best are specialists.

Obviously RT will continue to emphasize electronic and dance
music, but it is just the same the end of an era. Although if
you want a tragedy, this isn't it. (A tragedy is the loss of
those priceless record collections and stores and source
recordings on St. Charles Avenue and the Lower Ninth and Treme
and throughout Cajunland in the Katrina flood.)

RE: (313) Record Time ...The Truth

2005-10-11 Thread Svagr, Jodie
Seeing as how some of the posts relating to Record time seem to have gotten way
off the mark, I thought it best that the truth be posted from Mike Himes(see
below)... and although it is a shame that Mike Huckaby is no longer with the
company, it's a terrible insult to the really good people that still work
there, and have been amazing music buyers for the company for many years to
compare Record Time to Tower Records. I've been buying music from Record Time
Ferndale for many years now, and Vince Patricola and Matthew Boynton's
knowledge of dance music has been invaluable to me. Matt and Vince both know
their music, and they work really hard to be a positive force in the Detroit
scene, if you have any doubts, check out the Detroit Electronic Quarterly
magazine. It's a great example of what can be created if you have a positive
attitude, and Vince is the creator of it.

So, to dissuade anymore of this getting out of hand... (and just so you know, I
originally chose to shop in the Ferndale store because I preferred the
layout... the Roseville store's seperated dance room felt way too elitist for
my tastes... once I started shopping in the Ferndale store, I realised that the
buyers and the staff are incredible with what they know).

a message from Mike Himes:

Recently we made the very tough decision to close the dance room and
put all product onto the sales floor as we have had success with in
Ferndale. I had been struggling with this decison for almost 2 years as
the room had been slowly losing sales and traffic. With this decision
came something that made total sense on paper and on a business level
but tore my heart as it was my baby and vision and had done so much for
us and the community it served. It's 2005 and the climate for dance
vinyl is changing fast and although it is hard I had to face the
writting on the wall and make the decision to close the room and move
forward. This meant that Mike Huckaby, a dedicated and respected
manager and DJ had to be let go.
In a perfect world the room would be there forever but today the way
people aquire music is changing fast and technology which was once my
friend is now taking business away from me at a rapid rate. The DJ in a
box craze is over, final scratch and the laptop DJ systems are used by
almost 50% of DJ's today and the "good" music has gone back
underground.
In the past 5 years 70% of all independent record stores have closed as
again music is being aquired in different ways that skip people like
me. I don't want to be part of that statistic so I must do what I have
to and unfortunately closing the dance room is a step I took to not be
included in that stat.
For 22 years I have been part of this community and our allegance to
the electronic music scene has not been equaled by anyone else and I
find it sad that people would think I would turn my back on something
that is so very special to me and this is why I am writting this note.
Some of my best friends and most cherished moments are from the work we
have done with and for this great music community. The dance room is
closed and things change but what will never change is my committment
to support our local scene especially the electronic scene.
We are planning on still carrying the music and supporting it and the
mail order business is still alive and busier than ever.
 I guess that's all I have.
Thank you all for your support

I guess I should say goodbye to an old friend. I spent many a day workin in
that room selllin records. Experinces like that cannot bought on vynil. Many
fun times were had with Mr. Huckaby, Mr. Himes and the rest of the crew that
came and went. The dance room was one of the last dinosaurs like alot of us
are in this crazy biz. Get's harder to sell vynil with every day that
passes. Only the true soldiers can keep it alive now!!!

Yea i have to agree. Mike Huckaby was a big force behind alot of the
music at record time. When he called me a week or so ago to let me know he
was done there, i thought he was kidding at first. I hope Mike moves on to
better things. He really deserves it.

I know record time was never the end all be all record source, but i
picked up many gems out of that place. as well as met loads of people
there...I used to do mail order from record time back around 94 and have
alot of great records because of it. i loved those days I am sad that
they have packed the dance room up. alot of history there. but i guess its

I never did all that well shopping at RT but unquestionably it
was a highlight of many of my visits to the D (I met Terrence
Parker there for the first time in 1995, just to name one example),
and a hugely important connecting point for those serious-about-

Give it up for Mike Huckaby. I hope he lands at a good spot.
In my observation, nobody has done more than Mike to keep the
music going.

I'm not sure. it was friend, he did order some wax for me and it was nice
getting the music at a discount. he has an ebay store, but i think the us distro
wouldn't because he did not have a tax id number? this is something he is
looking into now.

He should let Kompakt know that their US distributor won't sell direct to
him - it might make them re-think who is representing them in the US.
Is it just me or is there sort of a monopoly/"cornering of the market" on
distribution in the US for most European/UK labels (and even US labels -
Submerge not included in that)

my local shop is finally dealing with some smaller distributor that readily
supplies Detroit techno and house labels (lots of them smaller labels) and
for the first time in years there is finally a bin that is pretty well
stocked with Detroit techno. Last time I saw this many Detroit records in
this shop was probably around '97-98.
I don't know who the distributor is but they are doing a fine job.
Oh yeah, they've got Detroit related t-shirts now too.

i picked up one of those not sure which one, but it is pretty cool.
i also got docile #6, eurotek on metroplex, 2 luke slater's, and a whole bunch
more most were $3. i had never ben given a box at a record store before, but i
only bought a few new records, the used bins were so good. the new perlon
(forget the name) someone with the last name johnson, the matt dear ep's and
two reggae comps on jazz-soul.

i must say i have not listened to the other records the joe gibbs comp and the
studio one story have not left my table since saturday morning. the studio one
story came with this bonus dvd with 4 hours of interviews and unreleased dubs.
it's really killer. toast to coxsone!

trust me!

but i can't say one way or the other, i always go to rt roseville (as i am

i don't like the site, but it's not a custom designed site for them, just a
template that they put items into. i would suggest submerge (you know them
already) or neptune (ferndale, they have minimal/experimental/indie) to
supplement your mailorder needs.

the bins at rt are definitely the best, you wouldn't believe what people
trade in (and overlook). i don't own finalscratch, but the amount of used
records i've picked up from people who 'don't need vinyl anymore' makes me
say 'i love finalscratch!'

i would recommend having a detroit friend (ahem) dig for the htf records you
need. i saw some ugly edits white labels there a couple weeks back, among
other goodies.

The sound was tight with Burst in control. The music went from new Plus 8 and
went back in history from there. (I am not sure the name of the track but one
of my favorite to dance too "tour de France" vocal in it really set me off)

I did not see John or Kenny because after being up front for a half an hour I
needed a cigarette (no smoking inside) and getting back in once you went
outside was virtually impossible (all ages mad candy kids)

but closer to the end of the show it had cleared out and Richie closed out the
night. For a free show it was quite hot.

the special release CD that was suppose to be available was not because of
"manufacturing difficulties beyond their control" --quote from Clark Warner

>>> Kyle J Dupuy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 09/28/00 02:09PM >>>

well, we've heard about foran's, the dj colloquim in ann arbor, and bukem
at the state theatre. to anyone who went, how was record time last nite?
