it's the 10th anniversary I believe. Pretty much essential if you're

I can't argue with that!

There's always a nice laid-back vibe in the daytime and the quality of the
organization, audio visuals at the HUGE nightime venue is excellent.

Sonar's main attraction is that it's slap bang in the middle of Barcelona.
You can go and see a showcase of Mille Plateaux artists in the afternoon,
retire to a tapas bar in the lanes for the evening, and then roll up at 3 am
to see Jeff Mills. I didn't go in 2002, but the 2001 line-up was
remarkable...so much that if you went to see one stage, it was more often
than not the case that you were missing something else equally as good.

Their policy is the bring you a variety of artists from all over the world,
many of whom you wont have heard before. Just because Mills Hawtin DJ on
the last night it doesn't mean that it's all big name DJs.

and then, there are so many artists around town, that some of the

one important thing about sonar:
sonar day is great for hearing new exciting music.
great atmo. great vibes, and small stages make it very intimate.
sonar nite is the other way around alot of people, bad atmo, sound system
which sound too hard. not intimate events at all.
and again the line up in the nite is for me at least boring.
john digweed? carl cox??? (i am not a big fan of hawtin

thats just my 2 cents

Re: (313) Sonar Festival 2003 dates

2003-02-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
my view of sonar was that it was essentially a 'music industry' event as
with Midem in Cannes, Popkom in Cologne WMC in Miami.

Not a festival per se like tribal Gathering, Homelands etc.
But as with Miami the general public have become involved due to the extra
revenue brought in.
This helps to explaining (as per the email below) why the events during the
day are nice and intimate, showcasing new old talent, why during the
evening they have the 'big players'.

I wouldn't be. Last time I talked to Rich, he wasn't keen on doing

big mausoleum in L'Hospitalet.

(He did mention he had something up his sleeve, however, which I'm going

It was never outside on the beach. The Pavella De La Mar Bella is
located adjacent to the beach, and it's an auditorium (holds about 8000)
and they have (erm ... had) outside stages on the patio overlooking
the beach, and (in 2000) in a parking lot adjacent to the auditorium as well.

So what about the multimedia part - clearly the music is great but this
trip might hinge on this other factor.

The Multimedia area is, obviously, a lot smaller part of Sonar as an
experience, but I've seen some interesting stuff in years' past. Rough
Trade (the record store/label) had a neat exhibit there in 2001, for
example. Some other more immersive exhibits such as stuff from the Touch
folks and a few others were interesting, too ...

I don't mind big name DJs as SUCH, but is anyone rather less interested in
the usual Hawtin Mills Rush etc. names on flyers? It seems they sell out for
big festivals... I'd much rather be seeing Denham, Vogel, D.Diggler and
Villalobos (and many others) on a flyer than the others... I'm not
convinced on Sonar untill I see a lineup, as it is meant to be a music gig,
the principle of of seeing what's being played seems a priority :)

Vogel DJ'ed (as well as played with Super_Collider) at Sonar a couple of
years ago. One of the best hard Techno sets I've ever heard.

People that think Sonar is merely a music gig are Unclear On The Concept.

I picked up Vogel's Dungeon Master out on Tresor last night. I was blown
away by this album, my favorite material of his yet (and i have almost all
of it). Imagine bpitch / perlon with a little surgeon in there.
