Dani Sicialano springs to mind too. I'll be the first to admit that I'll let lyrics slide in house, but I don't know exactly when we lowered our expectations. Lyrics used to be a big draw for me before I got into house/techno, and they still are when I shop outside of this. There have always been good political lyrics, and still are, like Blackman, etc, but I'd like to see more insightful probings of emotions. It's not like there's ever been a time when there wasn't some good lyrical tracks in house, I just think people have more room to write crap if it kicks. there was one tune on OM by andy caldwell i think, there was some hugely well known story about how the lyrics in that song prompted some cali guy to chase his girlfriend to france and ask her to marry him (of course they all lived happily ever after) so they lyrics DO mean something in some PROPER house tunes! ab -Original Message- From: Mann, Ravinder [CCS] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2003 8:38 PM To: 'Phonopsia'; 313 Subject: RE: (313) WE WANT LYRICS! RE: (313) WE WANT LYRICS!
4 Hero - Black Gold of the sun This is actually a cover of a psychedelic soul cut done by Rotary Connection in the late 60's (I think??) on Cadet. Anytime you play this out I can guarantee you will get comments. You can get this on the absolutely stunning Hey Love LP. Dusty Groove http://DustyGroove.com usually carries them, here's the description: - A massively beautiful piece of work by the new Rotary Connection -- a version of this groundbreaking Chicago soul ensemble which featured Phil Upchurch, Henry Gibson, and Charles Stephney -- the cream of the Chicago production scene! Minnie Riperton's still in the band on vocals, and her work on the LP is similar to that on the legendary Come To My Garden LP. The album features the incredible track I Am the Blackgold of the Sun -- a haunting soul anthem that has been a favorite of groovers for years, and which was later made into a house track by NuYorican Soul. A great album all the way through, and filled with loads of excellent cuts! Other tracks include If I Sing My Song, Hey, Love, Love Has Fallen On Me, and a cover of Terry Callier's Song For Everyman.
