yup - she also sings on stage with Massive Attack these days, haven't seen her
personnally but she's said to play the part very well...

Slam have used Dot allison on a couple of things. And also
 they have done
a remix of her track We are science. She's a very good
 vocalist in an
ethereal sort of way. Can't make out the lyrics though!

interesting that I too have been thinking about lyrics in
 techno tracks
  and
how it's hard to find new stuff with decent (or any lyrics)
 - wasn't there
a new Funk D'Void or Slam track that featured a female
 singer? I recall an
recent interview where - I think it was Slam - was talking
 about their use
of lyrics and how techno producers shun lyrics. I'm trying to find
  something on it right now...

I know there are tracks by Octave One and the KSR release
 that has lyrics
or some singing on it - but i haven't seen anything quite
 like the lyrical
content of, say, an Inner City track for a long time - or
 maybe at this
time I just can't recall hearing any new techno like that.
please inform me otherwise (looking for more peak hour type
 stuff or good

I've been turning to Chicago house and older house/disco
 for lyrics but
would love to hear some new stuff with a definite techno element

by the way that Angola 12 is killer - kept playing it over

  recently

I was having this conversation just yesterday with friends, about the lack
of good lyrics in house and techno. We were discussing 'Black Water' (Don't
let them tell you that war is the answer etc. Pretty cool) and a few things
came up, among them -

Elements of Life - MAW Feat. Blaze (MAW)
Excellent lyrics concerning our depletion of natural resources.

In fact, a lot of Blaze stuff has really well thought out lyrics

Acting Crazy - Round Three (Main St.)
Weird ass lyrics about someone's smacked up [girl]friend :-)

Dajae - Day by Day (Cajual)

I'm not sure if I particularly g.a.f. abt the lyrical content! If we
deconstructed all the lyrics of most of the tracks we are interested
in here, we really wouldn't be left with much that is literary, noble
or even coherent most of the time! The vibe is everything, for better
or worse. Plus, I can make my own mistakes and learn from them myself,
  thanks,
 without
need of the wisdom of an R'n'B singer to teach me, albeit in beautiful
  dulcet tones!

Maybe it's time we started to expect more though? That 'glad today' record
I mentioned earlier has excellent romantic lyrics, and the Brooks album is
packed with them straight through (even if they're largely nonsensical, they
are great: see - dripping in gold). Dani Sicialano springs to mind too. I'll
be the first to admit that I'll let lyrics slide in house, but I don't know
exactly when we lowered our expectations. Lyrics used to be a big draw for
me before I got into house/techno, and they still are when I shop outside of
this. There have always been good political lyrics, and still are, like
Blackman, etc, but I'd like to see more insightful probings of emotions.
It's not like there's ever been a time when there wasn't some good lyrical
tracks in house, I just think people have more room to write crap if it
kicks.

there was one tune on OM by andy caldwell i think, there was some hugely
well known story about how the lyrics in that song prompted some cali guy to
chase his girlfriend to france and ask her to marry him (of course they all
lived happily ever after)

so they lyrics DO mean something in some PROPER house tunes!

4 Hero - Black Gold of the sun

This is actually a cover of a psychedelic soul cut done by Rotary Connection in
the late 60's (I think??) on Cadet. Anytime you play this out I can guarantee
you will get comments. You can get this on the absolutely stunning Hey Love
LP. Dusty Groove http://DustyGroove.com usually carries them, here's the
description:

-
A massively beautiful piece of work by the new Rotary Connection -- a version
of this groundbreaking Chicago soul ensemble which featured Phil Upchurch,
Henry Gibson, and Charles Stephney -- the cream of the Chicago production
scene! Minnie Riperton's still in the band on vocals, and her work on the LP is
similar to that on the legendary Come To My Garden LP. The album features the
incredible track I Am the Blackgold of the Sun -- a haunting soul anthem that
has been a favorite of groovers for years, and which was later made into a
house track by NuYorican Soul. A great album all the way through, and filled
with loads of excellent cuts! Other tracks include If I Sing My Song, Hey,
Love, Love Has Fallen On Me, and a cover of Terry Callier's Song For
Everyman.

Re: (313) WE WANT LYRICS! - techno tracks?

2003-04-30 Thread Bren
Slam have used Dot allison on a couple of things. And also they have done
a remix of her track We are science. She's a very good vocalist in an
ethereal sort of way. Can't make out the lyrics though!

Regards,
Bren.

interesting that I too have been thinking about lyrics in techno tracks
 and
how it's hard to find new stuff with decent (or any lyrics) - wasn't there
a new Funk D'Void or Slam track that featured a female singer? I recall an
recent interview where - I think it was Slam - was talking about their use
of lyrics and how techno producers shun lyrics. I'm trying to find
 something on it right now...

I know there are tracks by Octave One and the KSR release that has lyrics
or some singing on it - but i haven't seen anything quite like the lyrical
content of, say, an Inner City track for a long time - or maybe at this
time I just can't recall hearing any new techno like that.
please inform me otherwise (looking for more peak hour type stuff or good
 lead ups to)

I've been turning to Chicago house and older house/disco for lyrics but
would love to hear some new stuff with a definite techno element

 MEK

by the way that Angola 12 is killer - kept playing it over and over last
night - both sides. probably one of the best new records I've bought
 recently
