I dont understand why people keep vinyl when we have 20gb ipods,
finalscratch, etc. I recorded my collection and sold 95% of it and new
records will get recorded and sold straight away. I have 1 crate of

Ideal but

Hi, maybe a stupid question, but where do you store all of those
records?
Just in your livingroom in a cabinet or just stacked away in some
corner,
or in crates?

Any ideas, photo's of there records, etc?

I'm moving this month to my new house and want to get rid of all

I own about 1400 records but there surely are people with a lot more

Yes I agree.. I have the 5x5 one and it's working well so far for storage. As
for having 'readily available' records upright and fast to flip through for
DJing at home, I'm working on building a custom piece based on some of the best
bins I've seen in record stores, etc. The kind that split the record about
halfway and are slightly angled in the front and back for easy flipping.

The shelves like this Ikea are great for storage but not so great for easy/fast
access if you're trying to get your mix on... and I'm trying to reduce the #
of crates lying around as possible, but there will always be some, ha ha

peace,
Matt MacQueen

I just bought some of these at Home Depot for $12.00 each.

http://www.millspride.com/mills/ourproducts/stor_items_c6.htm

The shelves are fully adjustable and are stackable. They are
simple to put together, they look cool, have a lifetime warranty
(if that matters), and in my opinion are a great deal for the
money.

The records stick out a little bit but I find it easier to flip
through them.

I've seen similar boxes to those MDF ones on the link in some record stores -
they were very shabby in construction and were quite expensive - I couldn't see
why people would buy them... If you want something as basic as that get some
MDF and borrow a drill and make them yourself for a few quid each...

I think it was only a while back this discussion came up but anyway... At home
I store about 1000 records in Ikea's Expedit bookcase
http://www.ikea.co.uk/product_presentation/show.asp?productnumber=9711&type=III&id=3039,3078
  - they only show the 4x4 one on the website but there is 5x5 one too (records
take up just over half of the unit). Its very strong and sturdy and I am very
happy with it. I reckon you can store 50-100 records comfortably in each
section meaning you can in theory get 2500 records in the 5x5 unit, but
remember that is going to be a huge weight so think about it if you are not on
solid concrete!

The rest of my records (about 10,000+) I store in a rented storage unit which
(1) I feel is more secure than keeping everything at home (2) having avoided
having to move with all these records once has provided itself very useful (3)
I don't reckon the weight of all these records upstairs is good for the house!
In the unit I use cheap shelving units from DIY stores (Homebase and Wickes)
which were about gbp20 each and store round about 1000 records each. Unsorted
stuff I put temporarily in plastic crates which I got at gbp1 each on Milton
Keynes market about 4-5 years ago and are still going strong!

Mine aren't exactly the same. Mine are the 5x5 compartment ones. Not too
bad. They've a bit flimsy during a move, but if you aren't going to move
too often they'll be fine.

building it myself it's not going to be all that expensive (or so I hope;).

What I've been using are metal food service shelves, like these:

You can configure them for your needs, they come apart when/if you move and
are VERY strong. Here's my tip: get them at a local restaurant supply
place and they're dirt cheap.

I buy these unfinished solid pine boxes that are made for 12" records from
a store called the Unpainted Place http://www.unpaintedplace.com/
I don't see the boxes on their website but I think they still make them -
although I might have been the only person still buying them. Some have
dividers and some are wide open. They stack on top of each other and you
can finish them however you like (paint, stain, etc.). Each box holds
somewhere around 200-300 records. I've got six boxes and ran out of room in
our living room for any more - but when we move into a house or larger flat
then I'll need a few more. Until then I'm using all the available space
around the boxes and keeping some in record bags.

These look ok:

in my mind the fact they are separate units is a bonus as if you move
house or whatever they can be easily moved - you could probably build
something similar yourself out of something a bit nicer than MDF.

I actually just had a big oak shelf custom made to get my records off the
floor. Was relatively cheap - the oak matches my house - and the store that
made it knew enough about records to know how thick to make the wood so
that it would support the weight of records and not buckle or anything.

The shelf only holds about 1,000 records and I have the rest on another,
older rickety shelf but I was able to get everything off of the floor.
