RE: (313) mp3(13) ...

2004-05-23 Thread David Powers
I know it seems weird but... maybe that is exactly what you have to do.
Musicians have often had to do similar, for years. Information only has
so much value, but a great performance can be more valuable because it
can't be reproduced the same way. Music in the commodity form is just
cheap to make and distribute - as is all information. I mean, even
authors of books can have this problem, and find creative ways to make
money beyond book sales.

my last 12" on M>O>S(Kaoz) sold pretty ok, and i made 86 euro´s with it.
Vinyl is way too expensive to press, promote and distribute for smaller
labels, specially since they only get attention if you buy some of the
heads with some freebee copies. I mean, I´m only making 86 euro´s...no
room for charity there...

I love vinyl, and expressed that view in the past quite explicitly but
were coming to a point where we just cant afford it anymore. I really
hope there´s a way to make money out of mp3´s, for now competing with
soulseek seems like madness, or people start buying cd-singles. CD´s are
much cheaper too make and transport, and would leave the artist with
just that lil bit more money to invest in his studio.

Its better money playing a record than making it, isn´t that a bit off
btw? I can play music at the bar down the road and make 16 euro´s more
than with a twelve. And they sure as hell dont book me for my releases.
I think im gonna be a dj! Book me to hear my tunes!

i dont know, just judging by how many people use slsk and other
p2ps, if only a small tiny fraction of those people bought the mp3
it would be way more than 1000 DLs. if final scratch and CDJs
become popular, many many people in far away places can DL your
tunes without any problem. and you wouldnt have to worry about
irritating distros. how many people here have distros in india or
africa picking up their tunes? id bet not many if any at all. but
those people could easily DL your tunes from a site for a small
fee and play them out. i talked to some african cats recently who
were telling me that they dont even use vinyl at all there, theyve
been using CDs for as long as he could remember. this could really
break open a true world market for a pretty universal style of
music.

It already has. Less vinyl is selling, and fewer titles are being pressed.

i'd like to see evidence linking declining vinyl sales to mp3s. anybody else
read the oberholzer-gee report? it's excellent. it begins by shooting down
the assumption that every mp3 downloaded is a sale lost, which is the flaw
of every other report i've seen which blames mp3's..google it.

mp3 marketing - first of all, how do you compete with free (soulseek)? i
know there are various little gimmicks/bonuses you can use, but it seems
like most people would just get it free...second of all, is there ANY money
in mp3's? i don't know the specifics of iPod, but the offers i've seen from
lesser known mp3 sites are along the lines of 40% net (60% to the site). at
$2 a download it would take 1000 sales to make 80 bucks. it's better than
nothing, but...

CD or Computer-based DJ'ing is much more viable. Ironically, my commitment
