So is soulseeX. soulseeX also is only up to 1.0 beta 6 and its last beta
was back in 2005 (versus 2006 for solarseek):

There's are some builds available as well, but they aren't considered
gold version either.

Hey

A while back when I was debating experimenting with filesharing (and can
we

please miss discussing the morality of this this one time - we've done it
before and the points have been made, I use it for one thing only:
checking

out records I have an inclination to buy before doing so, usually older
pieces which are only available second hand and so don't have mp3s up on
shop sites) everybody recommended Soulseek.
I've been using it for a while now but to be honest I'm not finding it as
useful for listening to rarities as I hoped.
For example right now I'm searching for Aquarian Project, t'n' i (I'm
after

tracks by these 2 I was tipped off about by posts on this list!) and
Instant House and coming up with zero results and for Insync and only
getting 3 results (but that does prove my setup is actually working in
some

fusion). At the time someone recommended leaving the search going for a
little while, these have been going for days.
I remember at the time someone saying you can get anything you want -
Bulgarian folk bands etc., obviously this isn't what I'm finding, what is
other people's experience?

Three or so years ago, the general search results in slsk were always
amazing. I think that over the years slsk users have closed up their

I find that the 'wishlist' feature works much better than the regular
search. Go to wishlist, add a search string and leave it running all
day or more. Try leaving the same search runnign in wishlist and normal
search and you'll see a huge difference sometimes.

Definitely people aren't sharing as much. For some people their
collection maybe is too big, for others maybe they want to give
bandwidth to their buddies over random strangers but I've almost
never gotten a cold shoulder from someone I talked to online.

over the years ive used it ive never had good luck finding what I want
on slsk.

but i can always find stuff that i did want at some other time.
slsk is good at expanding your musical tastes in ways you wouldn't
normaly do.

but not good at getting the stuff you crave.

my simple test for most p2p's is to find breton bagad music (e.g. Bagad
Kemper). they nearly always fail.

unfortunately i don't have any alternatives for you. but i am a pretty
big emusic.com user, always can get something worth having there.

Thanks to all for the replies on this particularly Giannis, Fab, Martijn,
Jamil, Briggs, O, you're all on my user list (where you've priovided a name,

Here's a reply I made to Giannis earlier today:

As far as the slsk thing goes what your answer indicates is
that really I should find another filesharing utility as I
really don't have the time to follow your advice! This isn't
meant in any snobby way: I'd really love to be able to do so
but in any given week on top of using my PC for it's
legitimate work purposes I usually manage to read my 313
mail, deal with any mail pertaining to my night and check
Piccadilly's mailout. If I have anytime left I may hunt on
Gemm for older stuff I'm after.
On top of this I'd love to watch Little Detroit, check out
other online shops (particularly Vinyl Underground here in
the UK and Submerge and Big50 stateside), buy records off
e-bay, look for books I'm after, visit yet more sites that
sound brilliant (Technotourist?) but I've never been to.
The reason I don't do all these things is because I just
don't have time. For me to be able to I'd have to find a way
to give up either eating, sleeping or working. The first 2
seem impossible to get round (and I'm not sure I'd really
want to!). Now where's that lottery ticket..

 hey francis :)
i dont know if u know this, but most ppl in slsk who have intresting
files are on strict user list sharing only. So when u distribute a
global search , this function cannot access their files. So as u
understand it's all about getting to know the right ppl. A way to do
this is by entering intresting rooms and getting to know ppl who share
same intrest in music. One room i recommend is this- 313 .And believe
me, some real diamonds float in the slsk network

Giannis gave me a reply with a few good tips and thanks to the rest of you
I've got others to try too - particularly the Wishlist.

To answer some of the other points I do already donate to get privileges
but this doesn't help.
There seems to be 3 things:
Some people have moved on from slsk.
Many only share with others on their list.
Some new versions of Soulseek are incompatible with older ones or
themselves!

Question: any other p-2-p programm that u find good besides Soulseek?

No I haven't tried others, I'm a greenhorn with little time for
experimentation - I need you lot to do the hard work for me : )
Recommendations anyone?

Slsk is still up; however, you may have to dl the new version. I think
they're up to 152 now. http://slsk.blogspot.com will keep you informed on
slsk news, while http://www.slsknet.org/ will allow you to dl new versions
and check the server status. The list of 313/slsk members I had up did not
make the transition to the new server when I moved the site. I'll see if I
can't dig up a backup of the page somewhere in the archives. The URL of
the
page is http://threeonethree.com/slsk.html. If anyone wants to be added,
just email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** BUT PLEASE TAKE THE (313)
OUT OF THE SUBJECT LINE *** to avoid being filtered with the rest of the
 list mail. :)

i have all kinds of techno, house, rock, rap, and johnny cash!

plus my wife has a bunch of pop, country, rock, and rap.

I go to the techno rooms when I am on slsk...but rarely am I on slsk any
more.

My last download was a bunch of Woody McBride. If someone wants to put up
Don't F**k with Cologne up then I would be more than happy to down load
it. And if someone wants to trade for it, then let me know what you are
looking for. I may be able to do that too!

After seeing many slsk usernames in various different messages over the
past
week, I thought it may be a good idea to put them all in one spot. I know
I
missed collecting a few of them to add to my list, since they were
scattered
across different threads... if anyone wants their username added to a list
of 313 listmembers with slsk accounts to be posted at the
threeonethree.com
website, email me privately. This page will not be linked from the

I will only post the link to this page to the list.
