Hold everything. Forget about the antiseptic corporate "hip hop" that
Wal-Mart and MTV would have you consume. Picture this scenario: four blood
brothers from Detroit, rapping together since a young age, approach high-art
electronic masterminds Nineteen Point Five Collective, it's CALLOWAY time.

I kind of missed the boat on this thread.

You cant forget the People's Movement. While not many outside of Detroit
will know who they are. Its a project headed by Detroit's own DJ Defiant,
who is one of the best underground hip hop DJ's in the city.
He is gathering a group of 40 local MC's and giving them time to shine on
the main stage at DEMF this year.

While JD & SV are great, there is much more to Detroit Hip Hop.

Check any of the Antidote releases and you'll know what I mean.

very bizarely, Gods Kitchen (another lesser known Gatecrasher/cream alike)
are doing a festival in the UK this summer, with a techno tent organised by
Atomic Jam. line up includes Derrick May, Suburban Knight, Funk D'void, Ben
Sims, Umek, Slam and Surgeon among others. Oh, and Mills is playing
Homelands.

which is a bit of a surprise for the UK these days.

To completely ruin any sort of 31337 status I would ever be able to
obtain...I am driving up from Austin, TX (1400 miles). I've always wanted
to attend DEMF, I finally had a chance this year due to being laid off,
and the deciding factor was not a Detroit DJ. It was Dave Clarke, sooner
or later all the Detroit DJ's make it down to Austin or Houston. I can't
ever recall a time when Dave Clarke appeared in Texas. White/Black,
Dutch/Detroit...a rose is a rose is a rose. It's all techno, and I'm
really excited to be taking part this year.

I say this not to be a snob but some people are traveling a great distance
to come here. (mute point here but...) Why bring in DJs that some people see
all the time when you could, with proper marketing promote the sound.

IE if it is simply here in Detroit, but with all outta towners would you
come, probably not.

You would wait for the tour to come to you, cause that is what that would
be...

What do you mean? There are Detroit DJs/acts performing this year. Or
you meant to say that there's too many unknown Detroit acts that are not
the ones you like or expect? All those expected to play have pretty
much played already, except Mills, Young, Hood, all of whom were
contacted, asked and/or invited to play but were unavailable.

I personally am quite glad to see those hiphop acts added, Dilated Peoples
is great, and (obviously) hiphop is very very big in Detroit, and deserves
to be represented at the festival. I actually wish there was more hiphop, I
think that would help improve the draw and appeal to the community of

As far as Ministry of Sound, well I'm sure people may have some strong

Put your negative crap aside people. this festival is STILL the best thing

to not only happen to all electronic music, but to detroit techno
specifically. There has not been one iota or whiff of trance any of the 3

what would you rather have them do for marketing? say nothing? Print

give it up. its getting way too old now. if you don't like it, DON'T GO.
it'll make it easier for me to enjoy the music more.

RE: [313] DEMF Update

2002-05-09 Thread Matthew Cloney
OK if my understanding of MoS is correct, they do mostly prog house/trance
type stuff right? But if they're not bringing anything into the festival
outside of the techno genre then it probably will do less to taint the
festival's atmosphere than bringing in hip hop acts. It seems like the
lineup was pretty much 100% techno before this point and it doesn't look
like it's MoS that's throwing that balance.

Cheers,

oh goody a DJ Twer!

they're talkin about the new mgd tower, the same tower as last year, and the
year before.

and all new heights of dance! if I didnt know better, I would think DEMF
is a big lame trance festival..

if i didn't know better, i would think you were trying to be clever.

Put your negative crap aside people. this festival is STILL the best thing
to not only happen to all electronic music, but to detroit techno
specifically. There has not been one iota or whiff of trance any of the 3
years, yet you all adore to bitch about it.

what would you rather have them do for marketing? say nothing? Print
flyers on lined paper that says, "a big festival, but its so underground you
probably won't want to go unless you're elite."

give it up. its getting way too old now. if you don't like it, DON'T GO.
it'll make it easier for me to enjoy the music more.

PS. Ministry of Sound will do a great job marketing the festival. It's a good
thing, as long as their logo isn't part of the branding.

I think Pop Culture got desparate for sponsors. Why didn't they just

re 313 demf update

2001-03-08 Thread paul
of course, because it will obviously be a load of trash anyway.
and we dont want to be talking about something so boring as the
biggest techno festival in the u.s.a ever now do we.

how dare these people who've only just subscribed to the list
even ask about this event.
