anyway, why does everyone have to be a 'hello have a nice day' person. it's no real indication of character. and besides, i've always wanted to bump carl cox off the decks. Respect to Nicole! Hi, I believe you guys are missing an important aspect here. We are talking about PARTIES here. Parties are supposed to be fun and the DJ should just as much be a part of the party as the crowd is. DC clearly is not. He acts as if it's only a job he has to do and although it IS for him, it should be more than just showing up in time and dropping his records. Sven's attitude is not about look at how cheery I am. It's about partying together with the crowd and showing respect to the crowd by not only dropping the best tunes in the best possible build up (and making them go totally mad in the process), playing for as long as the clubowner lets him and by being on the floor before his sets, checking the atmosphere out and talking to people, even remembering when he has spoken to them before and about what! We are still an underground scene, where the stars don't need to develop arrogant attitudes and need bodyguards and all that nonsense. I had the pleasure of visiting the Rex in Paris once where Sven was playing. When I entered the club, he was standing at the bar and he approached ME asking surprised what I was doing here since I was from Holland where I'd spoken with him at a party months before. He knew that!! He immediately introduced me to Terence Fixmer who was there too. Later he played a great set in that strange DJ booth with the windows open. It was so funny to see the three lines thick of trainspotters standing there the whole time. A couple of weeks later I saw a documentary on Dutch TV about Dave Clarke. There he was also playing at the Rex. There you saw him sitting backstage the whole time before his set, by himself, looking as if he was waiting for a dentist appointment. When he came on he had no idea what the DJ before him had been doing, then the windows went shut Now there's a guy who must really love his job. A job that 1000's of others would kill for. On the subject of the Rex, if there's one DJ who constantly switches places with Sven on my most favourite list, it's Laurent Garnier... RE: [313] RE: (313) Hawtin vs. Sven
Agree..i remember a fwe years back when Sven was playing Mazzo in Asmterdam on sundaynight. the place was pretty packed and he played form 00.00 till 07.00 in the morning. When i enterd Mazzo and went to bar for a beer a found myself standing next a rather little person (and i am not so tall myself:) with a funny haircut, turned out it was mr. Väth himself. He just stood at the bar orderd a beer and we had a chat about the night. We talked about how he liked playing clubs like mazzo, coming early to a club to catch some of the atmosphere before playing and he bought me beer. Then he went of to spin few tunes..bought him a beer back later on.. Had a very good night..and Sven couldn´t do wrong with me anymore:) Martijn -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: Ploegmakers, Joost [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Verzonden: vrijdag 19 april 2002 11:09 Aan: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Nicole Slavin; 313@hyperreal.org Onderwerp: RE: [313] RE: (313) Hawtin vs. Sven Hi, I believe you guys are missing an important aspect here. I understand your point, and I'll admit that it is nice to see a DJ enjoying the party vibe. My point is that it isn't a good reason not to go and hear a DJ. It's not the most important thing. Other than the bad attitude D.C is an excellent DJ. This has got me thinking about other DJs that don't show much emotion whilst playing. Surely there are a few Detroit DJs that have been brought up on the mean streets and aren't all smiley and jumpin around when on the decks? Re: [313] RE: (313) Hawtin vs. Sven vs BONES
One time frankie bones fell off the stage at a party in la and broke his front tooth.. He still played even though blood was coming out of his mouth.. What dedication :) on 4/18/02 5:03 AM, Ian Cheshire at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ahh you see he is the man! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 18 April 2002 12:42 To: innercity records; Martijn de Blaauw; Grammenos; Peter; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Super Coffee Beans Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] RE: (313) Hawtin vs. Sven Last year at the dutch Dance Valley festival he fell from this golf car and broke his arm. He had to play the final slot at the Techno Tent, which was hosted by Cocoon. Richie Hawtin was playing before him, and was still around when Vath started. Hawtin would put one of Vath's records on the deck, put the needle on it, and he then would help Vath putting the headphone on his head. Vath also had someone to flip through his records for him. Very funny to see, but he still managed to rock the place! He definately has the capacity for trance (duh- the guy ran Harthouse). And I've been told that when he plays in Europe, he spends more time waving his hands than mixing records. I will see and hear him this coming friday in Amsterdam So i will let you know about the waving in the air:-) but i must say the times that i have heard him spin he blew me of my feet with some amazing techno...heard him spin for six hours at Time Warp in Germany last year...best set i've heard for ages, the whole set was a perfect build-up from start to finish...20.000 people went completly nuts!! Got the whole set at home for those interessted. Okay , back to obscure techno business now.. Re: [313] RE: (313) Hawtin vs. Sven
but, as you said, he does play a mean electro set. i've been to a couple of nights that if it weren't for him, would have been completely boring. i think there was a lost, at the scala maybe, where he's set was the only interesting and dancable stuff played. i'm going to get done for that as i can't remember who the other headliner was, just that it was someone well popular? anyway, why does everyone have to be a 'hello have a nice day' person. it's no real indication of character. and besides, i've always wanted to bump carl cox off the decks. i can also think of a lot of great dj's who have openly criticised drug taking. -Original Message- From: Michael D Tyrer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Ian Cheshire [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org 313@hyperreal.org Date: 18 April 2002 21:32 Subject: Re: [313] RE: (313) Hawtin vs. Sven And isn't great when yo see DJ's getting along and having a laugh, all DJ's should have this mentallity, not likem Dave CLarke and Carl Cox who I saw at the End and Dave got really arsey withn Carl for dropping one more tunre than he should of.. fair enuff every DJ likes one more tunes but Mr Clarke got a bot funny and knocked Carl while he got to the decks, to the punters it looked really bad. yeah that's another reason I hate Dark Cave - he's such a moody fellah. I too have seen him throwing his attitude (on many occasions) - and without fail 2 minutes before the end of his set on goes the leather jacket and to the dot 2 minutes later off comes the needle and he's on his way. Back in the early days he was very outspoken about drugs, how bad they are (which is a matter of opinion) and about kids necking 'e's. He had some very disrespectful comments to make. Seems a bit strange to me, seeing as drugs play a major part on the dance scene and its mainly down to these drugged kids that he's a millionaire today. love is in the air! Sorry - not between me and CD .. (and just to keep my m8 gary quiet ... ) - yeah he has played some good sets in his time. I can think of a few place I heard him and begrudgingly had to admit his was the best set of the night... The electro set he played at Cargo on World DJ Day was great and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the same sort of set from him again at Atomic Jam a few days later (or was it b4 . that's the trouble with drugs!) - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
