Re: [313] your most soulful DJ?
I guess since I raised the question I should give my list: Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes (or as he was named @ DEMF '01 - "Old Skool") - he was playing some of the best house, going deeper and deeper and then he dropped "the tune" - I still don't know what it was and not really sure if I want to ever know - female vocals, strings - and I swear that a slight breeze picked up right when those honey sweet vocals came in. Every hair was raised. Who ever was playing early early downstairs at the All Access Party '01 - Rob Theakston do you know? knocked out some serious "you remember when?" tunes. Brought me back home to the whole "house party" vibe - set the mood for that entire night. Class. A good friend Thomas Spiegel - schooled in ways of disco (Zanzibar, Paradise Garage, etc.) - now he's back here in Minneapolis and we're looking to turn it out. Can't wait. Kenny Larkin - gets the rythmn pumping - DJ wise he's the incarnate of the Jack Prongo sample (?) "You can feel that rythm movin thru your system" - uses the disco elements to accentuate all that sweaty beat making... Dego McFarlane - only heard him through Groovetech sets but you should see me dance to the sound of the computer er maybe not. Also whoever it was all the way upstairs at All Access too - introduced me to the world of the broken beats. Claude Young - everybody has already mentioned why - he rocks them and he talked to us afterward - the man is all heart and soul Who would l like to see (in no order): Roy Davis Jr. Larry Heard Chris Gray Tony Humphries John Tejada KDJ and Theo Parrish ...the list goes on - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've said this before on 313, but even when Claude plays harder/bangin trax (which is quite often) he just just soaks them in funk with his mixing style, he adds the soul with his mix hands even if the records themselves are intrinsically lacking it by themselves. YOu kind of have to see/hear him in the mix to understand. I realize it sounds a little corny, but it's true. He can make even the stiffest pounders funky by what he does with them, the overlays, the faders, the cut-n-scratch and pauses, drop-ins, etc. Everything to Claude is a hotmix tool. I guess in some ways that's why I can stomach the harder Mills DJ sets, for the same reasons... they're hard but still funky funk funk. Hey all- I know it's a big and open question to ask but I'm curious to hear who - in your own opinion- is the most soulful DJ. What I mean is - for you who is the one whose "got it" and manages to bring "it" to your heart every time. And I'm talking only DJs here. Now I know that people will want to argue about what is soulful and what isn't - personally I don't care - and I really don't want to hear any negative comments please - I'm just interested in the positive. I don't want to see this go down as a "Richie Hawtin doesn't play soul music" thread - if your grandma is the most soulful let me know and I'll respect your opinion. Give some examples or details if you want. I'm not looking to stir up controversy - just want to see who makes the list(s). Please keep this a fun discussion (argue off list). When you say soulful, I think house (not to say that's what anyone else needs to think). My top three (soulful) house DJs would have to be TP, Ron Trent and Theo Parrish. I also heard an amazing, soulful set last Saturday from hometown hero Sam 'The Man' Burns here in DC. He really brought it - playing everything from 'Hold It Down' to typical naked-type DC deep house to garage classics. He's always tight and varied, but this one one of the best sets I've heard him spin - one of the best sets I've seen/heard here in DC. 'The Man' has been DJing since '78 and sounds like it.
