RE: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF? ideas

Ooh, I've been watching this thread, thinking OK, it'd be nice to get one
of these at some point when it's sorted what's happening. But not really
thinking I'd chime in as I'm not going DEMF (and am busy listening to clips
of the new Nubian Mindz).
But I'm liking these a lot. In fact I was about to say I like the 2 sided
map one so much I want to order one now even if other people don't and it
costs me £££ to have a one off printed. Then I realise Manchester isn't on
there. Shame on you Todd Sines! (goes off whistling Guy Called Gerald and
808 State ;-).

so, here's a few ideas I got going last night..
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/

all are PDFs - directory browsing allowed so you can [control / right
click to] save if you must.

the start - simple, effective, following the rules. the IM bubble.
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts01_bubble.pdf

next up - where it comes from.. and where it goes to. [who wants to be
 listed?] http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_1sided.pdf

third - an alt color combo [yes, I am gunning for 2 colors, Kent], and
 a wrap-around screen
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_wrapF.pdf
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_wrapB.pdf

why not- 3d text in simulating the Ren Cen [technically, 1 color]
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts03_rencen313D.pdf

the reality of it all - the beautiful decay of a glossy, yet decrepit
 city known as Detroit.
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts03_rencen313photo.pdf

Not one is by any means to be considered finshed. . More like
 sketches for future discussion.

The nice thing about a 2 color shirt is that someone might actually
buy them from you. :o then we can all git rich, biaaatch! Like Dave
 Chappelle.

Speaking of Dave Chappelle, I have a contact in Dayton, OH who has the
ability to do mutli-color screened T's - they did a pretty cool job
with making t-shirts + hats for the Release show back in December. And
they sold for less than $11 / shirt.

Manchester is on it. The two sided (wrap) t-shirt has it on the front -
right next to Sheffield and Grand Rapids (ha ha ha ha ha ha!)
However, Minneapolis is not and we've got Prince.

best so far!!! except i am not fond of the 3d font and think the
whole design needs to be condensed a little. and where are you
placing it on the tshirt? across the front or in the upper left hand
corner? nobody needs to be reading my gut.

Okay, so someone said the more the merrier, so I'll post up a less
technical looking (though a bit du jour I admit) option. It's a free
font, my own script and a phrase that I think captures both the attitude
and OT nature of the list at once (depending on whether you read it with
or without the pause).
Of course that's the artsy way of saying that I was laughing at the
phrase in my head as I read the threads and thought, I should put that
on a shirt. So I opened illustrator and there it is.

2008-02-28 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
I was placing the list addy square across the front chest, which should
put the other text block under your left tit/teat/pec. I like the font,
and probably won't change anything much unless something really makes
stupidly obvious sense to me. The real reason I did this one, was
because I saw too much thought going into the rest. So consequentially,
I won't think much further than I've gone with it (plus I like it). If
you have a change, feel free to hook it up though *cough*$tinki*cough*.
It'd be interesting to see what comes back. I still wanna see Todd's
though. He's really gd.

2008-02-28 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
Yup. You're right. It looks a lot better without the x's. a lot better.
Thanks. I like the fact that a lot of cool designs have surfaced and I'd
like to say before this thread gets officially deaded, that I think this
type of thing is great and should be continued (no matter the medium).
Gives me a broader view of the listmembers and what else they're about.
Thanks for playing.

i could live without the x though around the address. i know its a
common notation but its confusing as a public vision.

Nicely done, but doesn't speak to me. The b-boy
esthetic certainly is one of the underpinnings of techno,
but I miss the futuristic aspect. Typography always
carries a lot of layers of meanings :)

Or maybe the 313@hyperreal.org in a futuristic
style and then the tag ... how Detroit is *that* ?!

HMPF!! Do you always concede to the more vocal majority?

Your design on the front of the shirt and Raul's design on the back

hate to criticize work that i did not do but the design is a little
too referential to the number and not signifying enough of the list. i
would rather have the whole address be some sort of a focus. just my
opinion. thanks for getting the work in to see. not trying to be a bad
spirit.

I think the design is fine, although the GM reference raises
a number of problematic associations concerning the
company's relationship to Detroit (not to mention balance
sheet, market share, offshoring, the lamea$$ comments by
Bob Lutz about global warming, etc.).

But hey, when you're talking about anything Detroit related,
it's all about ambiguity and contradictions.

So yeah, Martin's gotten us the postmodern 313 t-shirt

GM exec stands by calling global warming a 'crock'

Fri Feb 22, 2008 3:04pm EST

(Editor's Note: This story contains language in paragraph 1 that may
be offensive to some readers)

DETROIT, Feb 22 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote,
Profile, Research) Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has defended remarks he
made dismissing global warming as a total crock of sh1t, saying
his views had no bearing on GM's commitment to build environmentally
friendly vehicles.

Lutz, GM's outspoken product development chief, has been under fire
from Internet bloggers since last month when he was quoted as making
the remark to reporters in Texas.

In a posting on his GM blog on Thursday, Lutz said those spewing
virtual vitriol at him for minimizing the threat of climate change
were missing the big picture.

What they should be doing in earnest is forming opinions, not about
me but about GM and what this company is doing that is ... hugely
beneficial to the causes they so enthusiastically claim to support,
he said in a posting titled, Talk About a Crock.

GM, the largest U.S. automaker by sales and market share, has been
trying to change its image after taking years of heat for relying
too much on sales of large sport-utility vehicles like the Hummer
and not moving faster on fuel-saving hybrid technology.

My thoughts on what has or hasn't been the cause of climate change
have nothing to do with the decisions I make to advance the cause of
General Motors, he wrote.

Lutz said GM was continuing development of the battery-powered,
plug-in Chevy Volt and other alternatives to traditional internal
combustion engines.

GM is racing against Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T: Quote, Profile,
Research)(TM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) to be first to market a
plug-in hybrid car that can be recharged at a standard electric
outlet.

Lutz has previously said GM made a mistake by allowing Toyota to
seize the mantle of green respectability and technology leadership
with its market-leading Prius hybrid.

A 40-year auto industry veteran who joined GM earlier in the decade
with a mandate to shake up its vehicle line-up, Lutz is no stranger
to controversy.

As part of a campaign against higher fuel economy standards, Lutz
wrote in a 2006 blog posting that forcing automakers to sell smaller
cars would be like trying to address the obesity problem in this
country by forcing clothing manufacturers to sell smaller, tighter
sizes.

Automakers ended their opposition to higher fuel standards in 2007
when it became clear that proposed changes would become law with or
without their support.

In December, U.S. President George W. Bush signed a law mandating a
40 percent increase in fleetwide fuel economy by 2020, the first
substantial change in three decades. (Reporting by Kevin Krolicki,
editing by Toni Reinhold)

GM is racing against Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T: Quote, Profile,
Research)(TM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) to be first to market a
plug-in hybrid car that can be recharged at a standard electric
 outlet.

Lutz has previously said GM made a mistake by allowing Toyota to

 with its market-leading Prius hybrid.

You are confusing marketing hype with product line. American
Apparel is a pretty OK company in my view. They treat their
people right and that's saying something in the cut-throat and
sweated labor world of the garment industry.

Then again, not every company stars the founder's grandfather

Well, I had heard some stories about him having loose relationships with
some employees, but nothing like that! Thanks for that insight.
The one shirt I do have - it was sent to me as a promo and it's
comfortable.
Never bought anything from them.

Did go into the new shop they opened in my city this past weekend but
honestly found it highly annoying, like their advertising (very bad 80s
retro)
after I left I was weighing whether ordering online would have less of an
impact than if I had to drive/take bus to their shop
anything to avoid going back there

hipster yuppie shouldn't have anything to do with buying local and organic
it's just trendy to do it at the moment which is a shame because that kind
of action needs staying power

like I said, I don't care who makes it
I'll buy the shirt if it keeps in line with my sensibilities - AA doesn't
so thanks for the info Tom

so - in regard to a 313 t-shirt, prefer something not from AA please thank
you

I like that idea - I'd buy the repress.

Maybe I should change the ink so that there's the 313 classic and
the repress.

This would look good on a black shirt with a white screen going down
before the blue, I'm not a fan of white shirts either. How about
Kraftwerk red :)

I'll leave it to you guys and I'll make the changes in the morning.

i like that solution. i never wear white shirts. i'm just too grungy
of a person, i would get it all stained up and then it would look
retarded. black covers up all my worries!

at first i couldnt tell what it was that made it weird, but it is the
inconsistent manner in which the 3s are shaped. it doesnt make it
immediately obvious what it is supposed to be. it was a decent enough
idea, i'm just not sure if there is a way to execute it and make it
look right without compromising the motown logo shape.
