Sometimes, for whatever reason, I get booked to play live sets where I'm
sandwiched in between bone-crushingly brutal techno djs. If you know my
music, you'll realize immediately that this is going to set up some
cognitive dissonance problems - next to 3 hours of 140bpm loop techno,
my music sounds kind of like West Side Story.
And inevitably, someone always comes up to me during my set and asks me
to play something harder. Last month at SO 36 I had a girl THROW BALLS
OF PAPER at me to get my attention, so she could tell me to play harder.
But I always stay cool - I politely explain that I'm doing a live set,
not a DJ set, and that I only have my own music and this is pretty much
what it sounds like.
I see my role as a performer as one of servant, not as idol. If someone
wants to talk to me, critically or complimentarily, I'm more than
willing to listen. That's part of my job.

reminds me of a funny story: time before last that hawtin was here in LA i
was standing next to him as my buddy notices this guy trying to give richie
hand-written notes on 3x5 cards... where is your 909?, do a 16-bar
breakdown. what?

wallet, check. ID, check. car keys, check. 3x5 cards and pencil so I can
give the DJ notes, check.

You mean Jamie Hodge - the last thing I have with his involvement is the
astonishinly good second Conjoint LP, 'Earprints' on Source (Germany) - a
freestyle electronic jazz masterpiece with David Moufang, Karl Berger and
others...

Highly highly recommended, along with the first Conjoint album which I'm
still desparately seeking on vinyl...

Cheers,

Tom

Does anybody know where that kid who did the Born Under a Rhyming Planet
stuff on Plus 8 a while back is nowadays? There was this track of his on one
of the old Trance Atlantic compliations that continues to kick my ass to
this day. I don't think I've ever really heard much from him since then,
 tho. Hmm.

just be thankful for what you've got

Close - Be thankful for what you got by William DeVaughn ('74)
it was his only hit. Massive attack also did a cover of it on
blue lines.

p.s. any Dubliners around... I'll be doing the kitchen with
Kenny Larkin this Friday.

Love (Arthur Lee's outfit) also did a very nice cover the hard-to-find
Reel to Real lp. It might be my favorite version.

1999-09-13 Thread sire
i thought merricks own review and release details sum it up well, sounds
great, read on:

New Release Info:

Various Artists - Second Array
Tektite Recordings

Cat no: TITE-05
Release Date: September 17, 1999

a1: Fred Giannelli - Celine Solution [W/P by Fred Giannelli]
a2: Moron - (neo)moronics part III [W/P by Sutekh and Safety Scissors]

b1: Silverlining - Don't forget your ambdo-cnyper [W/P by Asad Rizvi]
b2: Neo - Jerusalem [W/P by Jon Knorr]

Tektite Recordings returns for the second installment of the Array
series. This release highlights 4 new additions to the Tektite Roster.
The first, Fred Giannelli, has been creating exceptional music since his
days in Psychic TV. He has gained much praise as the Kooky Scientist on
Plus 8 and has a string of great releases on his own Telepathic
Recordings. Fred's contribution to Second Array is a speaker thumping
techno workout with playful synth patterns and bouncy rhythms. Moron
(aka Sutekh and Safety Scissors) comes to us from San Francisco courtesy
of Belief-Systems/Context for a deep pumping techhouse cut reminiscent
of Sterac or Maas. The flip contains two more exceptional producers.
The first, Silverlining (aka Asad Rizvi), is known for his releases on
Reverberations and Wrong among others. He has been a driving force in
the UK techhouse scene for many years and we are proud to have him on
the Tektite roster. His track is deep bubbly techhouse, with a groovy
bassline and excellent production. Rounding out the comp is Neo (aka
The Knorrs). This Earth Recordings head honcho offers a crunchy
percussive dj tool with plenty of drops and fills for the techno
trickster. This record is mastered by The Knorrs and cut at The
EXCHANGE.

Back in my industrial days, I used to grove on Fred Giannelli's Fred cd
on waxtrax! I still pop it out every once in a while.

They believe, in nothing higher, than the gods, that break the dawn.
We leave, this place to wired, seeking to break out now --- well
something like that.

So Fred, (I know your on this list), good work!
