The 4D people say that we should go vote for feature requests and that they
really do listen.

So let’s all go do that. Go to 4D Forums and vote 4 stars on every post by
every person in “Feature Requests” that wants 4D Write Pro to be able to
import/export to Word. There are many. I just did and it only took a couple of
minutes to click the 4 stars for each post.

Here is what you do:

Log into forums.4d.com
Click on “Feature requests” in the “Public forums” area
In the “Search” area type in “4D Write Pro” and hit return
On the first page that is displayed you will see 8 threads on this topic
Open each thread and for every single post in that thread click the 4 stars in
“Your rate”

You just voted for the feature request, multiple times.

Maybe if 10 or more people here on the iNUG go do this it will add up and make
somebody notice and say “hmm… this appears to be a feature people want. We
should add that in the next version.”

I love Paul Dennis response: "This is so obvious it shouldn't even be a
request.”

I have to agree.

I certainly hope we can open/save .docx document with 4D Write Pro in a near
future as this is mandatory for me also. I have an application install on
several sites that write contracts from clauses stored in a 4D DB and I need to
use 4D write and compatibility with MSWord is a must. Right now being
compatible with .doc document only is already a problem.

When I click on the link from the original poster, I get into a list of forums,

One thing I found to be very helpful was to see how the WriteLike tool bar
available via the blog does things. Most things we do programmatically in write
or pro are done via the tool bars buttons and menus as well. So often when I
was struggling to convert a 4D Write command of function to pro I found an
example of how to do it int he WrtieLike tool bar code.

I also have one client that is a huge 4d write user. We also need to have
ability to convert to Microsoft word. Additionally, there are some things we do
not seem to be able to do in write pro so for now, we will be maintain 4d write
licenses across multiple servers and standalone dos. At the last Summit many
spoke of this issue and 4D stated that they were going to implement export to
word and not rtf.

The same thing occurred in quick reports. The 64 but version did not at first
release support cross table reports which we use extensively

Perhaps we can create a survey and ask 4dwrite users what is stopping them from
going to write pro

Hi Chip,

Thanks for the clarification.

In our case .docx and / or .rtf would be acceptable. We don't need .doc
specifically.

We need something which could be saved as a stand alone document and easily
opened and edited within MS Word.

Thanks again,

Nope, it is true. For this version. I have 2 clients that are big 4D Write
users (one with a 90 user license) and use 4D Write to create Word documents.

I've asked about this at every 4D Summit where they demoed 4D Write Pro. At the
first showing several years ago the answer was “we will support all the current
4D Write Plugin features”. Then at a later 4D Summits it was said, it is not
there now but it is coming. At the last 4D Summit the answer was “we don’t
think any/many developers use it”. Even though I’m the one saying to them “I
use it a lot for 2 clients!”

So maybe you can flex some OEM muscle and get this put on the “must have”
feature list for the next version. I hope you can because I’ve had zero luck,
and I was speaking directly to the 4D Write Pro lead engineer.

.doc is probably an issue as it is a proprietary format from MS.
.docx might not be such an issue as it is "open" and is supposed to be

4D Write had an an export to RTF option which worked with MS Word. That was the
main reason we used 4D Write. Until 4D Write Pro has an .rtf or .doc export
option we will be unable to use it. This is an essential feature and we can
only hope that it arrives quickly.

I just added my name to the list of those requesting this feature. I was
frankly stunned when I found out it didn't exist in 4D Write Pro.

Command+Tab cannot be used for switching tabs because it is used by the OS for
switching applications.

The shortcut for switching tabs is Control+Tab to go to the next tab and
Control+Shift+Tab to go to the previous tab.

Feature request thoughts

2018-07-26 Thread JOHN BAUGHMAN via 4D_Tech
Working in 64bit on the Mac I am a bit frustrated with tabbed windows. Maybe
it’s just me but I keep closing the window instead of the tab I am in. Also
moving between multiple tabs is less than convenient when you do not remember
where a tab you want is located in the window with a lot of tabs. I find my
self having to go to the Windows menu a lot.

First off thought there was a way to turn tabbing off, but cannot find it.

As for using the tabbed window, I am think of posting a couple of feature
requests…

1. Throw an confirmation if a window is closed with multiple tabs.
Either just confirming the close or offering the option to close the current
tab or the whole window.

2. Provide some kind of back and forward capability. Something like
Command-Tab does for Applications on the Mac

I don’t know if either is even possible. What do you all think. Would these be
good feature requests?

Consider upvoting this feature request: FORM Export as JSON

2018-07-18 Thread Kirk Brooks via 4D_Tech
http://forums.4d.com/Post/EN/25004453/1/25004454

Dynamic forms have the potential for being a real game changer in the way
you work with 4D. (I know there's a lot of that talk going around now but I
think this deserves it because it doesn't require you to use ORDA. It's
more an extension of traditional 4D developing.)

The 4D form editor is actually pretty good, I think. Instead of having
dozens of forms in the database you could have a single form you use to
prototype then export to JSON for actual use. To edit you just load it back
up in your prototype form.

Not to mention the bazillion or so existing forms we've all got. Being able
to have 4D export those forms to an object conforming to the new dynamic
forms scheme would be tremendously helpful.

This is not a trivial task. I've been playing with doing this myself a bit
and there just aren't the tools available now to do this. Plus the
nomenclature for various object properties and attributes is different in
several cases.

Fastest Feature Request Implementation Ever

2018-06-28 Thread Cannon Smith via 4D_Tech
Some of you may know that I use a mechanism in my windows where each window and
widget on the window has its own “model” object. This can be passed into a
window and then manipulated after the window closes. This logic applies to
subforms as well and is set up so that when a subform is typed as a C_OBJECT,
the subform container’s variable is also the subform’s “model” object. This is
a _really_ handy way to work with subforms while keeping data associated with
them part of the main window’s model.

Since 4D has implemented the “Form” object, I wanted to switch to using that
instead of my hacky mechanism. The only problem is that I really wanted it to
continue working with subforms in the same way as I’ve been doing it in the
past. So I started to write up a feature request where, if a subform is typed
as a C_OBJECT, then the subform container variable could be the same reference
as the Form object from within the context of the subform.

As I was doing that I needed to double-check something about Form in the
documentation and guess what? I found that 4D had already implemented Form in a
subform context exactly as I was going to request! Fastest implementation of a
feature request ever!

Thanks 4D. :-)

Feature request : new command : MOVE FOLDER

The command MOVE DOCUMENT chokes (v13, also reported in v11 and v12),
on trying to move/rename a folder.

According to comments in the original feature request (for v11) MOVE
DOCUMENT would rename/move a folder, in versions of 4D v2004 and
before..

We need to have either :
- MOVE FOLDER, a new command (which would function as Move Document,
but with Folders)
or
- MOVE DOCUMENT, needs to be fixed to work with folders, as it did in
v2004 and before.

I would NOT have noticed, as the login credentials I use on the forum
have nothing to do with the 4D store/partner credentials I use, and as
far as I know there is no linkage between the two.

I am looking at the forum site now. There is no (apparent) information
regarding betas, nightly builds etc.
so... it appears I am right, that there is no tie (currently) between
my forum account and my partner/4d store accounts.
AS IT SHOULD BE

especially since the I don't really care about the login at the forum.
if someone were to 'hack' it and take it over... oh well.
I would create a new account, and ask 4D to kill the old one.

This is obviously NOT the same situation if the forum login credentials
are tied to $$$

text of my post on the forum:
personally - I do NOT like the idea.

why do i need to use a login credential which will likely have
financial information behind it (partner/store) to access a purportedly
open public forum?

The forum's login is currently, and should stay, separate from the
logins to other 4D resources.

To use as example a larger (more public) system. Online Games.
100s of million people use/play online games. Most of these
games/companies have forums for discussion of bugs, feature requests
etc. none of these game forums (that I have personally visited/used)
use any part of the game's login credentials - as login credentials
for their forums.

Why? to me it is simple - separation of financially backed logins from
public forums.

IMHO - 4D should do the same, and continue to keep the forums (and
other public resources) login credentials separate from more private 4D
resources logins (partner login, 4D store etc).

Feature request : Set Belongs to (Setname) -> table reference

2017-06-02 Thread Chip Scheide via 4D_Tech
test of feature request:
A useful function would be to be able to determine what table a set
belongs to.
I.e. Does the Set "My_Set" contain records from [Table1], [Table2],
[Table...], [TableN]

This would help to eliminate issues with (accidentally) trying to do
set manipulations on sets from different tables.

I envision, as I put in the title
Set Belongs to (Setname) -> table reference of some sort (pointer,
table number, etc)

4D (the software), internally "knows" which set(s) belong to which
table.
Why can't we, developers, see this information?

OK that works - thanks Tim.
In my defence, it never occurred to me to try to click a disabled star button -
they look disabled - they are dull grey.
If they were the bright colour they become on mouse rollover, I would probably
have clicked it before.

Which takes me to “I hate interfaces which hide their choices” - but I’ll stop

Instead, you should see 4 stars to the RIGHT of the green plus under the "Rate

uh... Do you mean for variable names? nah... no thanks. Can't
remember the last time I felt constrained by a 31 char limit. In fact,
reading code with a bunch of variable names approaching 20 char makes my
blood pressure go up. The worst for me is meaningless variable names. The
next worst thing for me is really long variable names that could use some
smart concise editing that retains meaning with readability.

Please vote for this feature request: Raise the 31 character limit

2017-03-04 Thread David Adams via 4D_Tech
Every time I return to 4D programming the 31 character limit bites me. I
spend some silly amount of time trying to jam enough information into
names. I hate it. So much. Part of the problem is that 4D is missing any
kind of module concept or scope, so I burn up characters with a module
prefix. Which keeps my code a lot more reliable...so I won't be giving that
up.

This feature request has been around forever. Satisfying it would make many
of us a whole lot more productive in 4D. it would deliver a real, daily
improvement to work with 4D, for those of us that use longer names.

Feature requests on the NUG are just talk. Comments here are *officially*
ignored. So, to make a feature request count, you have to do it on the
forums, like this:

http://forums.4d.fr/Post/EN/18946884/0/0/

You vote by logging into the Forums, finding the thread, and then clicking
on the "rate this" stars at the top. Tim Penner recently posted a link to a
Tech Tip on how to vote:

Tech Tip: How to vote for a feature request

Note that logging into the Forums seems to work now. I use Chrome and it
remembers my ID and seems to work fine now. (In the past, I could never
seem to get the login to stick...now it seems to work just fine.)

Feature request - Compiler directive - DO NOT change case of variable names

2016-11-28 Thread Chip Scheide
feature request :
http://forums.4d.fr/4DACTION/www_Post_Message/EN/1075213/0/0/

typing methods which are generated by the compiler, and therefore
variable lookups/type-ahead in methods make all variables ALL CAPS.

Please -- DO NOT -- change the case of the variables from that typed,
when generating the various Compiler typing methods.

ex:
(original variable name)
x_My_Text_Variable

Compiler typing method
C_TEXT(X_MY_TEXT_VARIABLE)

when using the type ahead for variables in a method the variable is
presented as:
X_MY_TEXT_VARIABLE

Which means either I have to select it and then change the format of
the variable name back to my preferred style, or I have to ignore the
variable type-ahead.

It would be MUCH MUCH more useful if the compiler did NOT change the
capitalization/formatting of variable names.

feature request

2016-08-30 Thread Charles Miller
I have added a feature request to create a setter to allow or disallow
savings of user names and another for passwords. I for one thought it was a
great feature that 15.1 did not have ability

Regards

Chuck
