Howdy! We've been talking about this for ages and I think we're just about at the point in time where we can actually start moving towards using the new mailing lists over the old ones! Our new lists are all the same addresses @lists.57north.org.uk, using that "new" domain of ours. I'm not going to autosubscribe you as that would be an abuse of your data, but should you wish to keep a relationship with us you can find the 3 lists at https://lists.57north.org.uk/mailman3/postorius/lists/ We've got -announce, -discuss and -ctte. All are welcome to join each of the lists and contribute your thoughts. We'll be decommissioning this list at some point soon, in a week or two. I'll send a reminder before it happens. [57north-announce] Open Tuesday 17th September
Hi all, Open tuesday continues tonight - we're off to see Kettock lodge, and then we'll be back home for about 2015 or so. car. After that? Business as normal. I need to work out what I've done to an HDD that makes it stop my bios (and only my bios) from booting midway through POST. If anyone has a USB<->2.5" SATA connector, that'd be greatly appreciated! Hx Reminder of the visit in case y'all missed it: We are arranging for a group visit to the Unit at Kettock Lodge, Bridge of Don - a potential new location for the space [1]. The building rep can be available to open from 7pm Tues and given our schedule, we will aim for this date and time. We'll assemble at the front entrance. Could I ask that anyone who wants to see the location but cannot make Tuesday 7pm to please get in touch ASAP. Morning Friends! Today is Thursday, and the last of the month at that! It's bringing us Cryptonoise, and afterwards I shall be occupying the space to further refine the bleep-bloop machine. Cryptonoise's theme tonight is "How portable is portable? Exercising the GDPR’s right to data portability" Thanks to Janis Wong for agreeing to travel to present at this session. As usual, we'll be starting around 19:00 BST. The new European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) reinforces existing data subject rights in an attempt to rebalance power between citizens and the increasingly sizeable and international companies that are collecting and exploiting data from them. The GDPR introduces one new data subject right, and the focus of this talk, Article 20 the right to data portability (RtDP). The RtDP aims to allow data subjects to obtain and reuse their personal data for their own purposes across different services. As no empirical research has been done to assess the RtDP, we exercise the right by making 230 real-world data portability requests across a wide range of data controllers. The RtDP is interesting to study as it operates under a framework that aims to be technologically neutral while requiring specific technologies for implementation. Our research assesses the ease of the RtDP process from the perspective of the data subject and to examine the file formats returned by data controllers. This talk will discuss the responses to 230 real-world data portability requests, and examine the file formats returned and difficulties in making and interpreting requests. We find variation in file formats, not all of which meet the GDPR requirements, and confusion amongst data controllers about the various GDPR rights. Howdy Friends. My Monday curling sessions are now complete until September. This means it's time for hacking! Previously, there were regular Monday sessions for quiet project work - less manic and more work focussed than the social Tuesdays. If you've got a tough nut to crack, something to solder or code to forge, come and play! Let's bring them back to life! All are welcome, and supervised guests of course. Howdy team, I’d like to remind you all that on this upcoming weekend - October 13 & 14 - we'll be running a weekend hackathon in space to help make the place better! Goood morning friends! For those of you not in the know, Tuesday evenings are open to anyone who wishes to come to 57North, Aberdeen's Hackerspace[1]! We get up to a range of activities on Tuesday nights, including but not limited to social contact, programming, manufacturing weird things and consuming sugary treats. We usually begin at about 7, but sometimes someone will be in earlier. We're still settling in to our new location, downstairs from Engage Gaming. Access is through our door just beside the Forum on Skene Terrace! If you're unsure about anything, ask in IRC[2]. If you're new, I'd suggest you bring a laptop, and perhaps a project you want to work on. If you're coming in, feel free to reply and tell us all what you're planning to do!
