[abcusers] ABC2win to sound card
Hi, I'm getting a Visual Basic program together that goes with ABC2win, but diverts sound from the PC speaker to the sound card. Anyone care to trial it or criticise? [abcusers] Bar Lengths
I may have missed this from an earlier discussion; apologies if so. Real, working musicians in bands need to be able to choose (often in a matter of seconds) a tune to go with the next dance. With a repertoire of hundreds (or a thousand or two) of tunes, the characteristics of each tune or set are not always easy to bring to mind. So, many of us have little 5 or 6 page lists, which give some of our favourite tunes aranged by the following criteria: Tune type (polka, jig, reel, etc) Key (and modulations) Bar length So which field in ABC do I use for bar structure? I have been putting this info into a J: header field - eg 32=8*2+8+8 for Galopede, 40=8*2+12*2 for Herbert Smith's Polka, 40=8*2+8+8*2 for Waterloo Dance. Some might think this academic, but for practical musicians, it's the second thing you want to know about a tune. [abcusers] someone with old software?
From: Jack Campin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [abcusers] someone with old software? I intend to post a revised version of the modes tutorial on my website: there are quite a few changes. But before I release it there are a few portability things I'd like to check. Mainly I would like to know if it plays okay on ABC2Win, but I would also like to know the following: (1) can ABC2Win handle M:none? This is optional but would be handy if it worked. No, ABC2Win demands an entry M: with the argument of the form number/number, e.g. 4/4 (2) can it handle in-line fields, in particular metre changes? Yes, done that; meter and key change can appear in the length of a stave line, but the K: M: L: fields must be at the left margin, and preferably in that order. (3) can it handle a file where all the tunes have index zero? (I need this to prevent plagiarism by the Tune Finder). It seems to. But I didn't realize the Tune Finder was a plagiarist. [abcusers] Extended Repeats
Can someone explain the problem with quotes after a bar line, please? Wouldn't it be best to avoid unmatched bracket symbols? The following works perfectly well with ABC2Win: CEC DED |1-3 EGE FAF :|2,4 EFG FED :|last time EFG ABc| Flos Quote from John Chambers: - I've also been contemplating solving the need for random text such as last time under an ending bracket. This obviously needs quotes, and has syntax problems after a bar line. What I think would work is to say that you must use the '[' in this case, and you can then write |: CEC DED |1-3 EGE FAF :|2,4 EFG FED :|[last time EFG ABc :| .. The description then would say that the actual ending syntax is: [text This would be followed by saying that the quotes may be omitted if the text contains only the characters 0123456789,-, and the bracket may be omitted immediately after a (single) bar line '|'. In the usual cases, the bracket and quotes will be omitted; the full ending syntax is expected to be rare. To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
[abcusers] Chords
Exactly my point, John; I wouldn't advocate that nobody adds chords, they're too useful to some of us (though I often wish it were done better). But I didn't want them clogging up the collection I print out for gigs. So I did something about it, although I'm not a programmer. I'm not sure that the harmony lines I would use (as a fiddler) would fit well on the Anglo, or other instrument. I'm sure your choice of chords would better for the instrument. So I usually post (e.g. to tradtunes) without chords. Thanks to all for the feedback, and advice. Flos 16/04/02 16:23:19, John Burton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Mr. Headford: as a complete beginner and Anglo concertina player what would be useful for me is adding chords to the melody line. Or perhaps just an appropriate base line. The ABC format and archives around the web provides me with many fine tunes many of which seem to beg for accompanyment. That's where I need the help. Thanks for hearing my plea. John Burton Suisun City - Original Message - From: Phil Headford [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 8:49 PM Subject: [abcusers] Chords I can see the point of written chords for complete beginners, but they clog the page up for me, and some ABCs out there are unlistenable because a quart has been squeezed into a pint pot. I don't know who dreams up some of the chord sequences; they must have cloth ears - possibly they are using software programmed by Mantovani fanatics. I've written a program to strip out all guitar chords and [ABC] chords, so I can work out whether one of the harmony lines carries a detectable melody. For useful markings like Finish on A music, the program merely ignores guitar chords that begin with a space. Would anyone find this useful? It's about 325kb. [abcusers] ties and accidentals
I can't understand why I've read so many emails on this topic. ABC quite clearly differentiates between slurs and ties (which is more than stave notation does), but some player somewhere interprets ^F-|F as (^F|=F). So? Mend the player. This is the abcusers group, not the software developers' group. I'm just waiting for someone to write a program to play ABC to my sound card, so I can rename it as playQabc.exe (I'm using ABC2Win). That would be a great improvement. The last system I had delivered arrived with the PC speaker unconnected, and I won't be surprised to see the next arrive without one at all. Phil Taylor - A sign of the ever-growing popularity of abc on the net? I don't quite think so. It might mean there more people are arguing over how to use it than there are people using it. Seems likely. Flos PS I tried the original double-spaced version of Shingly Beach in ABC2win, and it worked fine for me.
